Learning The Modes Pt.1: The Sound Of The Modes

If there’s one question I hear more than any others when it comes to music theory, it’s definitely: “What are the modes? And how do I apply them to my playing?” So I thought what better way to kick things off than starting to tackle this often-misunderstood and over-complicated subject!

Good luck and don't forget to share your progress with everyone in the Discord server!

Perfect examples to play along!

Oh yes absolutely. Modes aren't the same thing as a key so there can be multiple modes being used throughout different parts of a song! They're all just different flavors that can be used to create different moods in a song.

Bradley Hall

However, a song may consist of different modes if it has many parts that aren't all in the same mode?

That's good! I think I can only roughly identify the vibe of the major and minor scales, soyeah that was needed :)

Audrey Bond

Woooo, nice! Yes we'll work up to that gradually, it's important that understand the sounds first before applying them

Bradley Hall

That's the first time I sort of understand the modes a bit! In some guitar lessons I've took I learned to play the major and minor scales, dorian and aeolian modes but I didn't know how to make any use of this and what they are really ! I'm still a bit confused on how to use them but I guess you'll expand the topic! :)

Audrey Bond

That's great to hear, thank you!

Bradley Hall

I found the song examples to be extremely useful. Really looking forward to future lessons on the topic :D

Aftab Lateef

That's great to hear! Part 2 will be out in February

This is [exactly] the information I was looking for. Like. Sorting all this disparate information I've got stored away into something much more digestible, and so much more detail and context than you'd think such a short, extemporaneous-seeming video would have.
