Reacher S1E1 - "Margrove" (FULL EPISODE REACTION)

Hey everyone!

Starting this week off with a BRAND NEW SHOW: Reacher!

Previously, I only knew of Alan Ritchson from Blue Mountain State. A show I used to be obsessed with in high school! Now, to see him in this is crazy cool! I absolutely LOVED the first episode of this show, and I can't wait to see more!

If you guys had to rate this entire show, so far, on a scale from 1-10, what would that rating be? I hope you all enjoy taking this journey with me!

Love you all so much,

Alex

When are you reacting to the goblet of fire???

Ryan Byrne

Dude. You have no idea how happy I am that you're checking out Reacher!! I got hooked on it right away, I even started reading som of the books that the show is based off of. A quick rundown of the series, Jack Reacher was a military policeman that was in charge of the 110th special investigations unit. He is now retired and he travels all over either by bus or hitchhiking. He carries pretty much nothing but a wad of cash and a toothbrush wherever he goes. He uses his skills from the military to solve different crimes when he goes to each town. Alan Ritchson is the perfect actor to portray Reacher, he definitely fits the the character from the books to a T. Can't wait to watch the rest of it with you!!

Bryan Forquer

I can’t wait for Season 3

Rogue Mutant

All of that really resonated with a fellow vet here. Thank you for your service.

Richard Flores

I thought the first half of season one was great! Say a 7+.

Monk Without a Cause

This show is easily an 8-9. It's really good.

J Spence

god blue mountain state was so good wish that kinda comedy was still allowed now 😭

Ethan Saylor

My dad got me hooked on the books like 20 years ago the movies were ok. Tom was not the right guy. Alan is the right guy. As for Alans "acting" he's playing it exactly how the character is in the books. This is gonna be great, Alex you're so gonna love this.,

Ryan Towell

First time I saw him was as “ Aquaman” in the show Smallville lol. Haven’t seen this show yet, bout to watch it with you for the first time 🤘🏻

Cory

Never seen this show. First time with you Alex!!

Matthew

Alan’s portraying the Reacher character so goodd!

NuunOzil

this show was an amazing surprise, both seasons so far are 10/10

Jeremy Y

this show is amazing!

Quilva

You're spot-on. And ignore the assholes. I was just having a conversation with a friend about Reacher's mannerisms and the possibility of him being on the spectrum came up. It's an interesting theory whether true or not.

Louie G.

I don't recall asking for your opinion. Not interested? Scroll on by without being an asshole.

Rat MacKay

he ain't reading all dat

So...Reacher is easily one of my fave shows and a big part of that is the portrayal of Reacher. I think that, while they will certainly never acknowledge it and it may be wholly unintentional, Reacher is one of the more realistic coded Autistic characters I've ever seen on tv. Before anyone comes at me for this, I'm Autistic... I'm pointing out the traits and behaviours that I am deeply familiar with in myself. I can't go into all of the many, many bits of evidence to support this because some of it would be spoilery (maybe I'll drop a comment on each ep pointing these things out), but just going from this episode... Situational mutism. He's capable of speaking and, once he starts, it's kinda hard to get him to shut up, (even if Finlay wishes he could), but when faced with a scary situation (being unarmed and having two inexperienced cops drawing down on him...if he would have sneezed one of them were likely to blow his head off) in a strange town where he doesn't know anyone and doesn't understand what is happening...he stays silent. I'm the same way...I keep my mouth shut and observe...get the lay of the land until I process everything and my nervous system has a chance to recover from the stress...then you can't shut me up...ESPECIALLY if I'm able to play to my strengths/interests/knowledge base like Reacher is with Finlay. Flat affect. For the most part, Reacher maintains a fairly neutral face and voice. He doesn't show a lot of emotion, even when faced with the body of his brother. A lot of us get unfairly judged because of what our faces do if we aren't policing them. Sometimes we look angry when we're focused, we sound bored when we're just talking...which leads to some of us essentially feeling like we have to perform emotions which can come off as too much...exaggerated expressions and lots of vocal highs and lows...this is our attempt to cover up a natural flatness that society doesn't understand. Literal thinking. It's easy to toss away as an attempt at humour, but when asked about the last time he saw his brother, he says "a minute ago in the morgue". He's not trying to be funny and gets upset when it's suggested that he is. He was asked a question, he answered it literally. Taking things at face value is kind of the baseline for Autistic folks...now we CAN learn to not do this and speak in idioms like most folks, but even the most high-masking and linguistically flexible ones of us have to make an effort sometimes (especially when tired or overwhelmed) to not take things literally. Example from my own life...it took me an EMBARRASSINGLY long time to realize that "to get to the other side" as the answer to "Why did the chicken cross the road?" is a death joke and I'm NOT a dumb person. Special interests. Ok...I hate that the medical community has managed to pathologize being interested in something...but here we are. You know how the stereotype of the Autistic kid who likes trains and can tell you everything about them, the schedules, the type of engines, etc? Music (specifically blues music) is Reacher's train. He's set in his ways. He has lived a regimented life due to the military [believe it or not, LOTS of guys end up getting diagnosed as Autistic when they get out of the military because a) we tend to score high on the ASVAB and not really have a life plan yet so when recruiters come knocking, it sounds appealing b) the regimented nature of the military provides structure and routine...while taking a lot of the social issues out of the equation (not having to pick out our own clothing or hairstyle...being forced into squad bays with other people that prevents us from being able to retreat into ourselves too much)...when we discharge and all of that structure is taken away, we struggle...some end up at the VA seeking help for depression or anxiety, etc. and walking out with an Autism dx.] Reacher has a simple "uniform" that is readily available no matter where he might find himself. Jeans, a t-shirt, a jacket, and a pair of boots. It's simple, comfortable, affordable, and easy to find. Autistic routines aren't usually the Rain Man level of having a specific time that we have to do things...but more of the repetition of behaviours the same way each time...where we feel "off" if we do things differently. Dressing ourselves the same way all the time is an extension of that... Noticing everything...the situational awareness of a veteran is already usually high, but factor in Autism and it becomes next level. Because our nervous systems essentially view everything as a threat, we're always on high alert and will notice things that other people overlook as a survival mechanism. If I see everything, then nothing is a surprise...couple that with investigative training and you have Reacher...who can glance at a person and seemingly have this insight into their soul...it's not a magic trick, it's just noticing things and extrapolating them to their most logical explanations or predictions.

Yup, this. Alex, you wondered if it was good or bad acting, us book fans know it was accurate to the character. I also like how Alan does Reacher's quiet/dry sense of humor. He's got the delivery down.

He portrays reacher from the books pretty well, he’s stone faced all the time, and just calculating at every second. He’s often outwardly emotionless and he’s an absolute badass
