Alex you're right normally you shouldn't remove an object when you're stabbed. This is because when you remove it you lose more blood. But in the world of The Last of Us I don't think they will find soon medical attention. And you don't want to risk that it gets deeper into your body. So my not medical opinion is that he did right to remove it and should do something to stop the bleeding. Because the biggest risks are losing to much blood and infections. Because of the cold temperatures, I would fear the loss of blood the most.
