Need YOUR genius ideas!!!

So, a sneak peek of the next video - I decided to modify my craft room table a bit.... and then a lot.... ๐Ÿ’ก๐Ÿ˜

And it's turned into a totally cool smart table! Think dimensionally accurate projections so I can cast a gridfinity grid and line up all the parts I need for that drawer.

Think the ability to actually cast that sewing pattern directly onto the fabric to mark or cut!

I can keep all the common angles, dimensions and diameters instantly available so I can quickly check real life objects for size!

I can watch youtube videos explaining how to solder or the correct wiring patterns RIGHT NEXT to the actual thing I'm wiring!

And of course, I've been brainstorming all the games I can now play on the table!!

There's just so many places I could see this being awesome, it's actually hurting my head!!!!

So I need YOU. Yes, YOU with the big brains and the even bigger ideas. ๐Ÿ˜ You know I love it when we brainstorm!! So, give me your most genius (or wildest) ideas. Seriously, anything goes.

I'd be very interested in the .STL and mounting details...trying to figure out if my 8' ceiling in my office will work for it with my current Very Old Projector without having to crawl into the ceiling...

Gray

since it's the first one, wouldn't it be more of a Basic Omnipurpose Suspended Optics Maker System?

Gray

Cool! I'll need to try this at some point!! ๐Ÿ™‚

I tend to do most of the pieces using lead came as they tend to be larger pieces and need a bit more structural strength.

TopCat

That's amazing!!! I love this! I know even back in Da Vinci's time they used primitive projection systems to help trace images. I love seeing how people worked out this stuff!

Hands on Katie

Have you looked at the old epidiascope,? Maybe you could engineer an updated version of that.

Bob

This is an amazing idea, TopCat!! I love it!!! How do you make stained glass?? (I know there's various approaches), I was thinking about doing this for a few craft projects, but you're spot on, this would be such an easy way to visualise it all!!

Hands on Katie

This would be really cool for stained glass. At the moment I have to print the cartoons out on A4 and stick them together. Being able to project the design and the trace it would be fantastic. Also be a good way to test the aesthetics of the design before taking the cutter to expensive sheets of glass.

TopCat

Especially when it provides such a nice Augmented Reality Spacing Environment.

john gallagher

Beautiful! Iโ€™m so excited to see this set up!

john gallagher

I think that's pretty much what I've designed actually - it's got screw holes too, so you can just mount it to any frame, ceiling or tree either with a strap or screws!

Hands on Katie

Would be cool if you could clamp a bracket with the projector attached to any table so you could set it up anywhere with a laptop.

john gallagher

Great idea - I was musing that for my workshop - I think another of these tables would be great there!!!

Hands on Katie

Make it a vacuum table. That way you can hold your work in place while there grid shines on it. Trouble with projections is if you shift it at all, your layout is borked. Vacuum might help with that. Might be a bit involved to make it work... Could build a slim box layer on top with a pegboard top and then cover in fabric.

Andrew W

Ah, you can't beat a good Graphically Rendered Optical Projection Experience... you've all started me now!

Topographically Imprinted Table Surface featuring a Network Integrated Projection System.

john gallagher

I'm going to see if this can go in a video at some point, so watch out for it!!

Hands on Katie

That's more like it!! ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜ Now don't let me down again or you'll be in the dungeon!!

Hands on Katie

I've got it! "Holographic Universal Map Projection" :D

Bazza McSpleen

How could you let the side down?!?! Think harder!

Hands on Katie

If you're talking about adding the holographic display, the best I acronym I could come up with was "Dimensionally Enhanced Role Play System", or DERPS. I was trying to think up a smutty acronym, but nothing popped up... Honestly, I'm very disappointed in myself :D

Bazza McSpleen

Love the CAD idea, I'm already doing that with Gridfinity grids and similar, but CAD is another level! Oh and you've got me looking at holograms now!! ๐Ÿ˜Ž๐Ÿ˜Ž๐Ÿ˜Ž

I can't believe you all knew about VTT before me!! Although I can't work out what this makes it? VTTRTT: Virtual Table Top Real Table Top?!

Hands on Katie

I was going to suggest some things like a VTT for roleplaying games, but was beaten to it :) If you needed to align to a picture, you could attach directly to the camera too, or via the PC it's probably all plugged into? Or, if you're running a CAD program, you could import the camera image directly into that and size it appropriately within the app Also, with a different type of projector, you could make the display holographic... https://axiomholographics.com/devices/ I have no idea what this sort of thing would cost!

Bazza McSpleen

You're an actual genius! I haven't dared to click on the 'price' part, but I might pinch this idea for my outdoor workshop design!!! Watch this space!!!

PepeLePewPew

Interesting thought!! As you say, easy to slot a webcam next to it!

Hands on Katie

Great thought - I've actually started looking at IR sensors that go along the edges of the table to convert it to a touch interface!

Hands on Katie

Very anxious to see how you set this up.

john gallagher

Some genAI / openCV object recognition wouldn't go amiss either. A webcam next to the projector?

Dermot Canniffe

they used to make a keyboard that would project the touch input on the flat surface like a table. I would think you could look into that or projectors that have interactive pens that work like touchscreen

Bob Smithy

Exactly - this is just up and down - only just made it, so making the video as we speak! I'll make sure to include details. Linda's absolutely spot on, this is what I've covered - I've got SOOO many pieces of paper and print outs from sewing patterns, it's silly!! Especially when they're always larger than A4/A3 and you have to stick them all together. This you can instantly project everything you need - so I can have 1000s of patterns that take up basically no space at all!!

Hands on Katie

Googling "Smart Table" brings up all sorts of interesting hits. So you have a work table that you can adjust up and down? Tilt too or just flat? I don't recall that in a video. Perhaps add info on that too. Linda likes the idea of buying cheaper online patterns but never wanted to print out the pdf's onto paper. So this is all very interesting.

John Dammeyer

Hey John! Yes, it's actually very simple - but happy to share the files as always. All projectors come with mounting point naturally for ceilings, so I just built a 3d printed mount that let me point it downwards. Once I had that, I could set the adjustable desk to all the heights I wanted and saved it to the table's memory. This meant I could recall the precise heights I wanted and bang, I was pretty much there. I made a rough grid (as you can see in the photos) that was in 5cm increments and measured what this resulted in real life (eg 50cm grid became 64cm) and this gave me the multiplier I needed for perfect conversion from 'PC units' to 'real life units' - then everything could fit this forever more!! I'll cover more in the video and can share any tips/files too!

Hands on Katie

Are you going to show how you mounted the projector and how did you decide how far away so your grids were to scale? Or do you adjust the scale of the image that you project? All in the video? Hungry for details...

John Dammeyer

WOAH! Double jinx, I just set up my microscope on the table to test soldering microchips (I've made the table height-adjustable, so it's handy to stand up and solder), but I can't believe I didn't think to plug in the hdmi to the microscope and have a full table sized zoom!! Great idea!!

Hands on Katie

Just when I was thinking about what to do with that cheap projector my colleagues got me for my birthday. Might be a good idea to project the image of my microscope right in front of me instead of having to glance at a display at an awkward angle.

Marc Radermacher

WHAT THE ACTUAL HECK!!! This looks awesome!! How come I never saw this before!!! I'm LOVING THIS!!!! Amazing idea!!! Now I've got another thing to investigate!!!

Hands on Katie

Not sure it's up your street, but this would go great with FoundryVTT if you wanted to run a roleplaying game for kids/friends.

Dermot Canniffe

Apparently I need more free time to do this. Very nice

Scott Bronder

Wowww!!!
