That's not a NAS.... this is a NAS....

Oh my goodness, I'm going to need to take a few weeks to describe this monster. After about 15 years of Synology, I've got increasingly fed up with their increasingly cynical moves (eg use only our branded hard drives, removal of features, accelerated EoL support and so on) - so I got fidgetty... then I saw this being reviewed and it is a monster....

I'll cover it in a future video/post, but oh my goodness I've been getting little tingles of excitement as I test it out - to say it demolishes my Synology is an understatement, it is bonkers.....

I need a lie down!

I think 80TB should cover a few more videos... ;)

It's a QNAP! I'll have a video on this in the next few weeks.... it's a monster!!

My Synology hasn't died yet. Several HDD have failed, so I always keep two extra on hand. I didn't see the brand of your new beast...

Old Guy Fred

Both!! I'll keep an eye on utilisation as I install more - can't yet tell the right balance between app performance Vs cache

Hands on Katie

I have a couple of NVMEs for cache.

David Mcquie

Are you using the NVMEs for cache or apps or?

Nathan Church

Assume you mean Tb!! Way too small unfortunately - gone with 2 x 2Tb NVMEs in this. Don't imagine too long though before I can max out!

Well I just checked, and you can buy a 100Tb 3.5" SSD for $ 40,000.00 but I suspect you won't want to spend that much, still buy one and would have room for another 700Tb in the future, but you may have to sell your house to pay. The biggest reasonable priced drives seem to be 2,5 Gb at present.

David Mcquie

Can you get SSDs big enough for this yet? You're tempting me now!

Hands on Katie

True, but I am a Tech Head so I tend to buy the latest tech whenever I can.

David Mcquie

🥰 I did actually put two M2 nvme drives in to add a bit of nip, but 8 drives in RAID6 are no slouch either! 😂

Looks great, but you should have filled it with SSDsThen you would really be blasting.

David Mcquie

Oh it will, oh it will..... ;)

Love a good factoid!!!

I believe the entire Library of Congress (US) is around 50TB so, yeah, I think you’re good for a spell. So cool! Synology licking its wounds today.

That thing clearly needs to be filled.

Great thinking Bazza - I do think a TrueNAS (or alternative OSS) build would be fun to do. I think it's the perfect balance where you have these solutions 'snapping' at commercial solutions' heels - if their value declines, then their customers jump ship! Synology always had the edge for me on their software, but there's been a combination of a) chaotic software decisions (launching products, cancelling others, cancelling the launched product etc), b) cynical moves and c) OSS and alternatives catching up. This means there's really not a lot to keep me with them when they start messing around. I've been super impressed by the QNAP set up thus far - plus another point is the containerisation of software has meant it's far easier to install OSS kit on these anyway! Hence I'll install Jellyfin on this in a few weeks too!

I'm jealous of all of that storage 🤯I can't wait to see the video, Katie 😀

I'm in more or less the same position as you. I have an old (like 10 - 15 years old) Synology DS411j which is on the way out, the OS it runs got EOL this year, and one of the disks died after a power cut, even though it's on a surge protected plug! So I bought a Dell Poweredge R370XD (24x 2.5" drive bays in the front, and another 2 in the back for the OS, so I should be covered for storage and future expansion :D ) off ebay, and plan to run TrueNAS scale on it, with an embedded Jellyfin server

Too right, it's the trinity of modern makers - you can never have too many clamps, filament or storage... ;)

Hands on Katie

you can never have enough storage when you make videos
