Epoxy Coaster test.... number 1!

I had a brainwave involving an RFID tag, some tin foil and some epoxy coasters..... so I thought I'd do a little test of my theory first!

If the foil blocked the RFID signal, it'd allow me to create a controllable connection to different RFID tags in close proximity. If this works, I'll show why in a future post!

And I was laughing my head off when I started mixing the epoxy, but I'm not saying why!!!

Seriously though, the RFID coaster is a great idea!

LOVE IT!!! I could create a 'serving platform' that I could click onto my S10 when I want him in butler mode!!

Ingenious! And there’s no way drinking could have contributed to this idea. No. No association with drinking at all. I’d set a tag to order me another drink when the coaster points south. 🥳 Maybe my S10 can bring it to me… I’ll turn the coaster slowly each time I take a sip.

Bonkers and Brilliant!

Ok, so here's my mad idea as many of you are asking same and I can't wait to share... ;) RFID tags are awesome as you can just tap your phone on them and trigger pretty much anything you want, so I use them all over to do things like trigger music/lighting. HOWEVER they have one weakness of proximity - ie you can't really have lots of them close together as your phone doesn't know which is which. However foil blocks the signal pretty instantly, so imagine if you had a coaster for example that had a circular top that you could rotate. You put foil on the back of this, but cut a small hole of some shape in this piece, so you can spin it and reveal different patterns on the lower piece. Then you embed a series of RFID tags in a circle and you've got a multi-functional RFID coaster!! So you could have, say, six different lighting setups or six different music settings, then you just spin the coaster to the right icon and you can tap your phone. No batteries, no fuss! It could be waterproof, outdoor ready and so on!!

Excited to see just what you plan on doing with the RFIDs. NFC could be another option depending on your mad scheme.

Also, what could you possibly find so silly or comical about mixing up a milky viscous substance that absolutely does not look like anything else. Sometimes epoxy is just epoxy.

Serious Mad Scientist Vibes! Looking forward to hearing how the experiment went. Seconding the PPE comment. Protect our precious resources!

I'm still using W.E.S.T. marine epoxy which is mixed 5:1. Unfortunately I cannot make that familiar looking white creme mixture because over the last decade or so the resin has oxidized to yellow-orange. Still works. I've thought about using a foil shield to isolate the DHT-22 from the ESP8266. I found when it sat right above the ESP8266 the reported temperature went up by 2C. And that's with room air blowing over it so it wasn't heat from the unit. There have been other postings about RFI. For the RFID do you connect the foil to ground or DC Minus?

This looks like a wonderful project, Katie! Looking forward to seeing more☺️And I'm impressed with how tidy your workspace is: the last time I used epoxy resin, I made a bit of a mess🙄

You are quite right, this is a low fume one, but you're quite right on the PPE - it's actually really good to have people poke you on this as we all get a bit lazy!

That gives lots of interesting options

Simon

I'm not saying that was what made me laugh..... ;)

Hands on Katie

TL/DR Yes it does! It's surprisingly easy!

Interesting to know if tin foil is enough

Simon

Interesting! I’m intrigued. Exothermic chemical reactions make me giddy. Two-part epoxy has a familiar consistency.

PPE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I had a friend get uncured resin in their eyes. Not recommended. The fumes can be bad as well depending on the brand.
