What Luffy is saying "Soitsu Wa" meaning "that person"! So instead of the translation "He is our ally, you can trust him" it is more"/ "That person is our ally you can trust this person", this is also a bad translation, and a badly put together sentence I believe that is the reason they used a gendered pronoun Anyway Yamato is Female, also it ain't like she just wants to become a man, she wants to BE a whole different person!! The only trans character in wano is Kiku(Kikunojo) .

With Yamato, she is a female, not trans.(I’m not trying to offend just letting Supreme know) She just admires oden sooo much that she wants to be exactly like him, thus why she called herself a man, since he was a man. And in Japan there is a certain word for gender neutral and in English translates to man for some reason but yeah that’s why the anime says “he”. So calling Yamato “her” is alright because she is a female by Oda 👍🏻 I hope this clears things up 🙂 oh and on a side note, while you wait until more episodes are out you can react to some AMV’s now that you are basically caught up! Both congrats on 1K eps. And also cool to see you caught the Wapometal mention (which I originally missed on my first viewing). Although interestingly, in the manga it was mentioned by Franky in the Fishman Island arc, but not in the anime. I assume it's because manga readers would've already been aware of it through the Wapol cover story where it was introduced, while the anime wouldn't adapt it until way later (between Zou and Whole Cake Island arcs).

In regards to Yamato, here's how I understood it : Yamato is a biological female who identifies as Oden, and Oden being a man, she wants to be like him so much that she calls herself a man. As opposed to a trans person, her reason for calling herself a man is not because she feels like a man trapped in a female body. Like, she doesn't take the appearance of a man and for me it is the biggest point why I would adress her as a 'she'. That's how I reason it and in this context I believe it is fair to call her a 'she'. (sorry in advance if it triggers some people). Just wanted to put this out there in the hopes that it would make it a bit clearer for you, but in the end, adress Yamato as a man or woman and it would still be okay with me.

You can just talk about yamato as a female she just wants to be Oden and he was a man, but her gender isnt important. The official One Piece YouTube channel also called her a female. The translation of the anime is just weird.
