Fuji (and Hoshi Moeka who plays her) are my favourite too.

I MUST say, I absolutely DESPISE this philosophy of an "Eight Fold Fence". Hate, hate, hate it! The idea that ANYONE, man or woman, male or female orientation, etc... NO ONE should feel the need to Hide who they are in order to survive. I get that the feminine nature of ALL things creates a varied attachment to all emotions (varied based on the individual). A centralized force within all humans and their emotions is PERSONAL SAFETY. I'm honestly too drunk to explain this, BUT hear me out... The world hurts. People suck. Life stinks!!! But, if you can approach your days KNOWING this already, you can accept the reasons why we are here in the first place... (Again, DRUNK) We aren't here to worry about the past nor to worry about the truths. We can't change the world if we simply accept it as it is, HOWEVER, we can't begin to change the world until we understand it. The 8 fold fence is a cop out. It's a way to surrender without dying, but you're basically dead inside. Trust me, I grew up on this principle, and all it did was make me lonely and incapable of accepting human interaction after a point. Mariko is the same. The wife who lost her child is the same. Hell, Yabushige AND Toronaga are the SAME. The world once was a dark place where humans couldn't even trust their own Families to have their backs. This was a time where life seemed almost completely meaningless unless you were a noble or a soldier. Even then, life was very pragmatic and the value of each individual was rarely felt. Even families tore each other apart for personal gain and a better future (This show IS actually set within 30 to 50 years of Blue Eye Samurai, after all. Actually, if you think about it, Fowler was honestly most likely one of these white men like Jon Blackthorne. Allowed to live here in secret because of his aid to the Shogun... Yeah, I LOVED the timing of these two shows. I actually was playing Ghost of Tsushima at the same time!) Bottom line is, While I GET IT... I still hate it. I hate imagining a world where life, on a large scale, is considered useless or worthless. I hate the idea that people would be SO afraid of being hurt that they would rather die a slow death of the self. Killing who you are in order to survive is counterintuitive. Being who you are DESPITE the masses, despite the world and it's truths... THAT'S what life is all about. That's the challenge that makes this whole thing worth it. Don't be afraid. Be great, because you were BORN great. Don't hide in the shadows, because it is Your Light that makes the world a better place. Don't allow the world to suck and just go with the flow. Change it! Stand up for it! Say, you don't want any part of it, and you're not just gonna walk away when you see things being a way you don't like. That's what the world... no, The Universe needs. People, Souls, a collective conscious.. that Fights for change and moves in a direction to affect the world. We can't do it alone, we need each other's support. We need to shake each other free and awake and say "Hey, brother or sister, Welcome to the World of the living. Let's make this place worth living in!" In case you didn't read this already, I'm DRUNK as a skunk.... But I hope you get the message anyways. I hope you understand what I'm trying to say to you. If you don't, it's okay. You may leave. We love you all the same. But If you do.... Understand THIS... We ARE creators. We are the saviors of this world, and if WE let them silence us, then we will have forever forfeited our duties as the chosen ones. I'm not trying to get freaky, but fuck it, let's take it there.. I believe all of the Normies are Lightworkers and so are most of the YT reactors I run across. You may think they just got into it for the money, but hey, a calling is a calling. Are YOU on YT spreading good vibes and positivity, while simultaneously advertising for GOOD content?? Okay then. I believe the people get what they deserve, and they've proven a lot to me over the years. I think maybe they've grown more from the experience more so than they've helped people grow, but I think that's all Divine planning. Watch what they do going forward! (They've already made the switch to helping people out more with these reactions. Don't think about it too hard.) Anyways, did I mention I'm drunk? ๐Ÿ˜† I think guys get the point tho. So, BACON MAN... OUT!

It still looks very silly my guy๐Ÿคฃ

you should consider reading the novel sometime, they over played marikos "sunny" disposition in the nbc series. She is far more complex in the novel, this version did a better job of showing that but its still kinda surface level compared to her book counterpart.

The hair styles of the samurai. "fuk my shit up fam"? No Suraj not exactly, its a young vs old thing, the older samurai lets say Yabu or Toranaga have full heads of hair the younger ones like Omi and Toranagas son have the middle shaved. Its actually about the newer helmets they wear. The newer helmets fit better on the middle shaved thing the younger ones have going. The older samurai have the longer hair because that was the style at the time (like an onion on your belt). The younger ones are sporting the new hair style thats becoming popular. Of course the younger hair style will become the classic samurai hairdo thing in decades to come that you can see in countless films and works about that period, at this point the country is in a state of change. Its a really small thing but shows just how much detail and care was put into this show.

Anjiro was another trap, once there Toranaga would've been "protected" by Yabus army aka a hostage in all but name again, he blindsided Yabu by his speech and then hightailed it back to the ship before Yabu knew what was happening.

Nagakado did exactly what Omi wanted him to do. Omi wasn't surprised by the cannon attack at the end. He planted the idea for it in his head. Watch the last scene again and you will see Omi smiling behind Yabushige.

Chris is technically right about the rifling in cannons but that's from a different time period. Though crude forms of rifling existed and were being experimented with during the 1600's, that technology wouldn't be implemented for widespread use until centuries later. What made the English cannons superior to the Portuguese and Spanish was they basically used the scientific method to develop high quality cannons. The English scienced the shit out of slaughtering people. Unlike other European cannons at the time English cannons were smaller, weighed less, used lighter ammunition which led to increase accuracy and longer range, used wheels which was revolutionary for dealing with cannon recoil, and could easily be reloaded by a small team allowing for faster rate of fire. England was also able to standardize cannon and ammunition on a mass production scale whereas other kingdoms had issues of quality control, ammunition that may not fit their cannons, and faulty cannon production amongst other problems. IRL, were the English cannons as accurate at range as portrayed in this episode? No, but Shogun isn't a documentary. It was a good representation of why those cannons were top tier military technology at the time.

#SundayRundown #Shogun In the NBC series, the explanation of the 8-fold fence, and the bathing scene, happen together. Blackthorne is in an onsen, and Mariko comes in, and does what I'm pretty sure Suraj thought she was going to do in this version: strips down and joins him. Blackthorne asks "...Is this normal?" Mariko responds "Oh yes." And goes on to describe the 8-fold fence in the context of privacy. During that time, men, women, and children would all be crammed together in many different circumstances, including bathing. Thus, with the 8-fold fence, you can have "privacy" within yourself, despite your physical circumstances. It's a more light-hearted scene, and indeed, Mariko is - on the surface - a more light-hearted character in 1980, because, in that version, she masks her inner turmoil with sunny pleasantries, rather than the polite stoicism she masks with in the FX version.

That scene at 28:20 was meant to be dark, the first time I watched it I though it was a random woman that was sent by Mariko.

Xonok

As a white/asian bi-racial person, Suraj just accurately described my skin color.
