A privateer is like a pirate with a license from a particular government. In other words, a pirate to everyone except the government who commissioned them.

There's a reason the most dominant fighters have a crazy reach advantage. Jon Jones dominated because it was hard to get close to him. A spear or a bow is my weapon of choice. A shortsword would be good to have in case someone gets too close.

Blackthorne looks like Calvin from The Blind Wave.

#SudayRundown #Shogun In the NBC series, Blackthorne is more overtly religious. He doesn't want to sleep with a prostitute when Mariko offers him one, and when she offers him a boy instead, he responds "Do I look like a GOD. CURSED. SODOMITE!?"...which is especially funny considering the actor playing him, Richard Chamberlain, was in fact gay. 😆 --- Chris is both right and wrong. Someone who doesn't know what they're doing will definitely have an easier time using a spear vs. a sword, but that also means it's faster and easier to GIT GUD with one as well; which means spears were actually the superior weapon in most cultures (including Japanese), with swords simply carrying a greater mystique. As for women in Japan, Noble women especially were commonly trained with spears so that, when the husband was away fighting, the wife could defend the household from any interlopers. --- 7:56 - "What, you didn't even read it!" - It seems you guys missed what was going on here. 😛 Yabushige's squire just handed him the will he wrote for himself at the beginning of the episode, in anticipation of Toranaga killing him for his involvement with Ishido. Since that didn't happen, no more need for that will. --- 9:12 - Notice how the son says "Greys are forbidden through this gate!" I don't know if you noticed the color-coordination of each regents faction, but they're even more pronounced in the NBC series; with helpful captions that pop up on the screen, saying "The Greys", "The Greens", "The Reds", etc., in case the bright colors didn't clue you in. Again, both series are worth a watch; the NBC version being much more stylized.

The Japanese have a treaty with the Portuguese, so John is a pirate for them. Of course, it's not that simple, but in general the English and Dutch are the newcomers right now, so John has some reasons to be fearful. The Portuguese have actual trade relations. The Dutch are just some random people who showed up and attacked a Japanese "ally". The rutters are a way to pressure John, but they are unimportant enough to be waved away with a handwave if he does what he's told.

It's not just Hollywood. The sword was always glorified. Every commoner had a spear, only real warriors had a spear AND a sword. The glorification of the sword is centuries older than the spear.

Ullrich Pfeiffer

It all depends on the situation. The romans were much more effective against greek spearmen because of the terrain that sometimes necessitated close range fighting. Just imagine trying to stab someone in a closed room with a spear compared to a smaller sword it would bee too unwieldy,

Bob

Yep. Swords were ceremonial and secondary, "last-ditch" weapons for Medieval knights and Samurai. Hollywood likes their sword fights so we rarely see a samurai with a spear.

Chaos T

Historically, the sword is a sidearm. Spear is the primary weapon of warriors throughout history, even in Japan. Also, Mariko is a samurai, from a very long line of samurai, she's absolutely trained in fighting both is spear and archery.

One kingdoms pirate is another kingdoms privateer. Humans haven't changed 😆

Chaos T

I'm certainly not a weapons expert, but it's my understanding that a spear is generally more effective than a sword. Swords were more of a status symbol in general.

Blackthorne was a privateer. As you said, basically a pirate, but on behalf of the Dutch.

Toranaga likes Blackthorne but he's totally playing him aswell. The swimming scene is a bonding moment but also insight into his character. He's showing his dominance over John by making him dive so many times. It also shows his cleverness by tiring John out before the race. The piracy evidence is another implied threat from Toranaga. He's telling him if he acts out of line, he can kill him on grounds of piracy whenever he wants.

Lurkingposter

lol "piracy" in this era is very hard to define. Sir Francis Drake (he's a really famous guy) was absolutely a "pirate" as far as the spanish were concerned. I guess the easiest way to explain is, the guys on the other side of the war are "Pirates" but we are Loyal soldiers of our King/Queen/Monarch. They were all pirates all of them, but only against the enemies of their country, or anyone who is being neutral, or anyone that might be an enemy in the future, or if they had stuff we really want. Its a very loose term, general policy is send out ships with "letters of mark" to attack and take anyone or anything the enemy might have.
