2021-08-26 08:40:42 +0000 UTCA small correction that might help frame the characters better -- the anime makes it look like Roswaal literally killed Ram/Rem's village and family. Clearly in the flashbacks it was the witch's cultists, so what's up? In the light novel it's more clear that what actually happened is that Roswaal knew the attack was coming (thanks to his book), but he did nothing to stop it even though it occurred in his domain because the book did not tell him to stop the attack. So, in a way, the guilt is the same, but it's not like he actually led the attack.

Only the holder is able to decipher the contents of the gospel and is incomprehensible to anyone else. The Tome of Wisdom is a book that has been created by Echidna that allowed her to draw knowledge from the world’s memory. This book apparently has the knowledge of everything (regarding the past, present and potential future of the world). If a normal person tries to read the book of Wisdom, they would lose their minds due to the sheer amount of knowledge present in it.
