One last time, the full update on all the IOI members. What have they been doing since disbandment? Where are they now? This is the one where I might have the most to talk about since these are arguably the most significant people to come out of Produce 101. #1 Jeon Somi, or Ennik Somi Douma, was born in March 2001 to a Dutch-Canadian father, Matthew Douma, and a Korean mother, Jeon Sunhee, in Canada but moved to Seoul when she was only six months old. She joined JYP in 2014 and you know the story from there. Sixteen, Produce 101, I.O.I. Right after IOI's disbandment Somi joined the second season of Sister's Slam Dunk and became part of the project group Unnies: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nv5_uvyqI9s Two months later she featured on You, Who? by Eric Nam: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OaG575r_Dyo Later in March she also participated in Idol Drama Operation Team for the project group Girls Next Door. I mentionend them once before. Other than Somi they had Mamamoo Moonbyul, Red Velvet Seulgi, Nature Sohee (ranked 15 on PD101), Sonamoo D.ana, Oh My Girl YooA, and Lovelyz Sujeong: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pxehTrUTo0A Somi left JYP in 2018. She was at one point part of the lineup that would eventually debut as Itzy but she decided to go solo under The Black Label instead. I don't exactly know her full reasons but in any case, she made her solo debut in June 2019 with the song Birthday: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oDJ4ct59NC4 Further comebacks would follow in 2020, 2021 and 2023. Sadly her releases are pretty sparse. To this day, almost five years since her solo debut, she only has a mere 14 songs in her personal discography. There were almost two years between XOXO and Fast Forward. But she seems to be pretty happy with how things are going for her :) Somi's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/somsomi0309 #2: Kim Sejeong's first foray into Kpop wasn't Produce 101, in fact. She participated in K-pop Star 2 in 2012 when she was 16 years old. Got eliminated pretty early on. Then joined Jellyfish and competed on PD101. And during IOI's time, Jellyfish were also gearing up to debut a new girl group, called gugudan. This is why Sejeong and Mina weren't in Whatta Man because they were debuting in gugudan at the same time. I already talked about it a bit when discussing Kim Nayoung under the finale episode. The song I want to recommend here is Chococo. A really fun quirky song and MV about chocolate: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vLVSf_yI_r8 I had this on repeat a few years ago. Honestly more addicting than chocolate itself :D And Sejeong also had a really quick solo debut! As part of Jellyfish's β€žJelly Boxβ€œ project she released her first solo song Flower Way in November 2016: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zumBqDr0FCk And of course you know Sejeong as an actress too. After a cameo appearance in a 2016 drama, she made her proper acting debut in 2017 with a starring role in School 2017. Her most famous roles are probably The Uncanny Counter and Business Proposal from 2022. So even though gugudan disbanded way too quickly, Sejeong is doing pretty well. Balancing both of her careers as a solo singer and an actress. And if I may make one more recommendation: Her album Door, which featured both Voyage and Top or Cliff, is a complete masterpiece from beginning to end! Sejeong's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/clean_0828 #3: Choi Yoojung debuted in Weki Meki in August 2017 together with Doyeon and two other contestants (Elly and Sei). Since I already talked about Weki Meki twice before, let me just cut the bs and give you their best song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AHikmx0eVXM This is Cool, from 2020. What a song, honestly. I haven't heard any other group do anything like this. Which makes it all the more tragic that Fantagio doesn't seem to be doing fucking anything with this group these days. Yoojung also made her acting debut in 2017, though not quite on the same caliber as Sejeong, as she has only appeared in a few web series. And there's also her solo debut Sunflower from September 2022. You actually have a reaction video to that on your Youtube channel :) But apart from that, not much has been happening on the music front. Yoojung does a lot of variety and seems pretty popular in that regard. I just wish that Fantagio would remember that they have an entire girl group in their dungeon πŸ™ƒ Yoojung's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/dbeoddl__ #4: Kim Chungha (birth name Kim Chanmi) very quickly started her solo activities after IOI's disbandment. A first prerelease single came out in April and her debut EP released in June 2017. However, if I am to recommend just one song, it's gotta be her magnum opus (next to I'm Ready). This is Stay Tonight, which came out in 2020: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=By9-Lqn5358 A cultural reset, I tell you! Chungha is also no stranger to collaborations. I already told you about Wow Thing with Jeon Soyeon, Seulgi and SinB but there was another one that came out during her IOI time: Flower, Wind and You which saw eliminated trainee Ki Huihyeon (Cathy) collab with Chungha, Somi and Yoojung. Somehow I'm only seeing this now while researching Chungha: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uu2u9mryCl8 Chungha has quite a prolific discography. Four EPs, two studio albums, countless singles and collabs. Including her biggest work: Querencia. A 21 track album! Granted, five tracks are merely interludes but that's still 16 full songs. Not many Kpop albums are as big as that, especially in recent years. But to say that it's all sunshine and roses would also be a lie. Her previous company MNH was not good at promoting their artists. They kept BVNDIT on a two year hiatus, finally gave them a comeback and then promptly disbanded them five months later. And in Chungha's case, they seemed to have lost interest in her after 2022. Well, it actually goes back further than that. That album I mentioned above, Querencia, was supposed to come out in 2020. Stay Tonight was the first prerelease and it came out in April 2020. But the album just got delayed again and again. We got four entire prereleases before the album finally released in February 2021. Her next album, Bare & Rare, was split up into two parts. Part 1 released in July 2022 with Sparkling as its title track. Part 2 was slated to release a few months later. But that never happened. The album itself was ready, all the songs were fully recorded. Chungha even performed a few of them at the festivals I saw her at (and she's even more wonderful irl than you can imagine) but they just never saw any official release. Chungha's contract with MNH ran out in April 2023 and then it got really silent around her. Now we know that she even considered fully quitting at one point. We can thank Gabee that she didn't. She was the one who talked Chungha out of it. I think I mentionend it somewhere else but Chungha and La Chica are really close. La Chica even got their team name from one of Chungha's songs. And yeah, a few months ago Chungha signed with Jay Park's new label More Vision. Jessi is in there too! And you pretty much know the rest. Eenie Meenie, I'm Ready, let's fucking go! I still hope that she can release Bare & Rare Part 2 in her new label at some point 🀞🏼 Chungha's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/chungha.art #5: Kim Sohye didn't pursue a career in music after IOI's disbandment and returned to acting full time. Honestly not that much to say here. From what I can tell she has a pretty normal and active acting career. Most recently she portrayed a boxing star in the 2023 drama My Lovely Boxer. Sohye's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/s_sohye #6: Zhou Jieqiong/Kyulkung/Pinky debuted in Pristin in March 2017, a group I have already talked about in great detail. So I'm gonna cut the BS and just give you the best song out of that entire project. This is spotlight, the b-side track from the Pristin V subunit: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l4gAnhSuduw God, Pinky was so fucking good in this song. Pledis, you idiots! How could you waste a group like this?!? Anyway, Jieqiong made her solo debut in China in September 2018 with the song Why. But there's no MV and it was the only non-OST song she ever released. She started acting, appearing in a few TV shows and a movie from 2020 onward. And generally she has returned to China full time, completely focusing on her life and career in her home country. A return to Kpop is unlikely. Pinky's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/zhou_jieqiong1216 #7: Jung Chaeyeon was already part of the girl group DIA before PD101 started. That's also why she wasn't in Whatta Man because DIA was preparing for a comeback at the same time: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0KGHiRo2apM (I assume it's Mr.Potter, I might be wrong tho) After IOI disbanded Chaeyeon returned to DIA full time and promoted with them until 2020. Next to her music career, Chaeyeon is also a prolific actress, appearing in many TV shows from 2017 onward, as well as cameo appearances in other artists' MVs and a bunch of commercials. And that's basically what she has continued to do since DIA's hiatus and eventual disbandment. Chaeyeon's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/j_chaeyeoni #8: Kim Doyeon debuted in Weki Meki together with Yoojung and the other people I mentionend above. But there was another little project in 2018 called WJMK. This was a one time collaboration with Seola and Luda from WJSN and Doyeon and Yoojung from Weki Meki: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gMukx_M2oN0 Weki Meki themselves released their most recent comeback in November 2021 with Siesta: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kYt8gxlthWs And then? No idea. They got a lightstick in 2022 which lead us to believe that a comeback was afoot. But nope. Doyeon has started acting and doing general variety stuffs at least. Her Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/lafilledhiver_ #9: Kang Mina debuted in gugudan together with Sejeong and Kim Nayoung. As I already mentionend, this was also the reason why she wasn't in Whatta Man. And here I'm gonna promote gugudan one last time by recommending my favourite song from them. This is Not That Type, their final comeback before their two year hiatus and disbandment: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9QTZCB2Ujr8 This song is just a complete masterpiece! Such a shame that it was the last one from gugudan. One thing I do have to mention though are the gugudan subunits. I already talked about SeMiNa with Nayoung and Sejeong but Mina was also in a duo called gugudan 5959 (pronounced ogu ogu) together with Hyeyeon: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wut7K5vDjA0 Aside from all that, Mina built herself a pretty strong career in acting. Her first role was in the 2017 show Children of the 20th Century. You of course mainly know her from Hotel del Luna. And yeah, acting in TV and film is her main occupation right now. She hasn't really done anything in terms of music since gugudan's disbandment. Mina's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/_happiness_o #10: Im Nayoung was in Pristin. I'm just repeating myself at this point. But honestly, just look at this debut! Nayoung front and center right at the start: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wLfHuClrQdI This is completely irrelevant but I really think that she's the prettiest among all the PD101 contestants. Yes, I have a crush on her, so what? Ahem. Nayoung shifted gears and went into acting after Pristin's disbandment. Her first big role was in a show I have been yelling at you about for probably like two years now: Flower of Evil! I won't say much but she plays a very important character and she's SO GOOD. Acting has been her full time gig since then. But that doesn't mean she was completely done with music. In 2021 she entered another survival show. One we've been telling you about for a little while: Girls Re:Verse. I won't spoil who she is, I'll leave that for you to find out, should you ever watch it ;) Nayoung's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/nayoung_lim #11: Yoo Yeonjung was added to WJSN as their 13th member and third main vocalist (yes, WJSN have three main vocalists, kinda ridiculous). She first appeared in the group's first comeback Secret: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5m2KBDBueAM This was at the same time as Whatta Man which is why Yeonjung is the fourth member who was absent from that song. And the rest is pretty much history. WJSN continued to release banger after banger with Yeonjung absolutely belting her ass off on all of them. All of which eventually lead to them winning Queendom 2, releasing one more comeback in July 2022 and then forever disappearing into the dungeon of Starship Entertainment. Starship! For god's sake! Please remember already that IVE is not your only girl group! I beg you! Well, while Starship is busy ignoring WJSN, Yeonjung herself has gone into musical theatre and has starred in four different productions since 2022. Yeonjung's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/uyj__0803 And that's it! 101 updates for 101 girls. I need to rest now πŸ₯΄ But from this whole thing I got the feeling that pretty much all the groups and artists I mentionend here would have great potential for a Spotlight reaction. Most of all Chungha, WJSN, gugudan, Weki Meki and Pristin. But don't do that right now! Only if you have the time and the right mood for it.

Marcel Wannieck

Yeah, 5 MVs would've gotten the video blocked 100% I almost forgot that it was the main concern πŸ˜…

Daniel Goland

Iirc DG expressed some concerns about including five MVs in one reaction video due to copyright. That's why I suggested leaving out the song that we'd hear on the show itself anyway. To keep the number of MVs at a safe four. And honestly, I really don't think the IOI version is all to different from the show version. The MV is basically just footage of the girls in the recording booth.

Marcel Wannieck

The WJSN member is called Yeonjung, not Yujeong. μ—°μ • and μœ μ • are two entirely different names.

Marcel Wannieck

however during their last concert they promised to stay in touch and to meet at least every 5 years, a promise kept because they often meet (sometimes only with 2 or 3 members sometimes with 6 or 7) the only member who has difficulty met the other is Jiequeong (pinky) because she returned to China after Pristin's contract with pledis because after I.O.I the members almost all joined groups. Sejeong and Mina joined Gugudan during their contract with I.O.I Yujeong joined WJSN Chaeyeon returned full time with Dia Yoojung and Doyeon joined Weki Meki Nayoung and Pinky join Pristin Chungha started a Solo career in 2018 Sohye resumed her acting career.

Sejeong was also talked to when speaking about expressing emotions/authenticity (I placed it in similar categories when talking about it)... If you disagreed with Marcel about Crush I wish you said it 2-3 weeks ago when it was mentioned, now in hindsight I can't really do much about it. I was very open to suggestions, and I don't remember you pushing for A reaction to Crush and now that the video is out you say it was a bad idea not to react to it, I wish you said it weeks ago :) If you did, and I missed it, my apologies of course.

Daniel Goland

- ????? why didn't you react to the MV Crush??? I mean Marcel suggested that to you but for once it was bad advice on his part. the Crush version that we had in the finale was a remix version adapted for 22 finalists, it was not at all I.O.I who sang. the MV is cool and really sung by the Eleven members of the group. a little disappointed not to see your reaction it's one of my favorite songs and the group only has 5 Mv's. - Dreamgirl simply one of my favorite kpop song. I.O.I really represents the kind of group that was really successful at the time, really based on groups like SNSD, T-ARA with a really girly concept but capable of adapting to a girl crush concept over time. Dreamgirl reminds me of SNSD songs like OH!!! and of course the message of the song is quite obvious, all the girls have gone through failures and struggles to finally reach the top and this is even more obvious with Somi. - you're wrong DG the teacher was talking to Somi not Sejeong when she said that she didn't feel enough authenticity or feeling in the way she sang. edan lee mujin service we were talking about the fact that indeed the feeling we have with Sejeong is that she is sincere. it's the only idol for whom I never had any doubt about the sincerity. I even question myself for idols that I adore like Jennie or Lisa do they show their true personality or is it that they act like idols are supposed to TO DO . - Whatta man is an adaptation of the original Salt and Pepper song. during this period I.O.I was in sub-unit as Sejeong and Minah debuted as members of Gugudan, Chaeyeon made a comeback with Dia and Yujeong debuted with WJSN if Dream girl shows the cute and bright side of I.O.I Whatta man definitely shows the girl crush potential of the group. - VERY VERY they're banger this song is very attractive and the chorus stays stuck in your head for weeks. I really think that if I.O.I was not a temporary group they would have been one of the best groups of all time and would have easily competed with TWICE, Red VELVET and BP. I think the same thing for IZ*ONE and also for Wanna one who would also have competed with BTS, EXO and SEVENTEEN - yes I.O.I is unique in the sense that in general all groups change or experiment with several concepts over time. When they are young they have cute concepts and when they are older they move towards more mature or chic concepts. but I.O.I experienced this in just 9 months, their 3 albums are incredible and their b-sides are almost as varied as those of Dreamcatcher. it goes from ballad, pop, dream to edm, rock or trap -Downpour this song makes me sad every time I cried during their last concert during this song. I couldn't accept that such a popular group could be disbanded when they were at the top and the members had so much to show us. the year 2017 was a horror for me because a lot of groups that I loved had disbanded this year: I.O.I, SISTAR, Miss-A, Wonder Girl, , GIRLS DAY, B.A.P, Spica, History etc... (even if some) groups like KARA are making comebacks to celebrate their 15th anniversary. I love the fact that the MV is a recap of their life as a member of I.O.I, some of their performances, their dorm life, some of their variety or reality shows their first victory in a music show against Twice which means a lot for SOMI. imagine I.O.I and Somi wins against the ultra favorite group to which she should have been a part.

fabrice maire

They were literally huge back then, even won against BP and BTS iirc? Imagine if they were a permanent group... πŸ₯² And I remember Sejeong being everywhere on variety shows as the main host or a guest etc and I love how theyre literally close until now. They regularly hangout, support each others' comebacks and events, do each others' dance challenges and they even spend Christmas with each other 😍

I originally checked out IOI all the way back in 2020, near the beginning of my Kpop journey. And boy, did I not know to appreciate them back then. I hadn't seen PD101 (in fact, I watched it for the first time with you) and while I had heard about their significance, I didn't really *get* it until now. So this was great to relive the golden days of a time I never got to experience myself directly. And another thing: almost four years of Kpop have really opened up my music taste. Back then, I didn't like songs like Dream Girls. I didn't like most of Twice's early music either. But that has changed. My favourite IOI song is still VeryΒ³ (which I did like from the beginning) but now I can finally appreciate all the songs a lot more! On that note, I should probably go back and give the early Twice albums another chance. Another side effect of this PD101 journey is that I now REALLY miss those post-IOI groups. A lot. I mentioned it a few times but Pristin (with Im Nayoung, Pinky and 5 other contestants) was the biggest waste of potential in Kpop history. And don't even get me started on gugudan which had Sejeong, Kang Mina and Kim Nayoung together in one group! Argh! I've been blasting gugudan's Not That Type on repeat the past few weeks. There's this thing fans call the "IOI curse". Where any group that was formed out of IOI members was doomed to disband. Pristin: debuted March 2017, last comeback August 2017, subunit May 2018, disbanded May 2019 gugudan: debuted June 2016, last comeback November 2018, disbanded December 2020 Weki Meki: debuted August 2017, last comeback November 2021, who tf knows what their status is rn WJSN and DIA both debuted before IOI. Though DIA haven't done much of anything since 2020. WJSN had a really good run but it seems that Starship are now just keeping them in the dungeon in favour of directing all of their resources only to IVE. And WJSN won Queendom 2 for Christ's sake! But you can't deny that IOI brought out some REALLY amazing solo artists with Chungha, Kim Sejeong and Jeon Somi! IOI should have gotten the same 30 month contract that the later Produce groups would get!

Marcel Wannieck

- Yeah, Very, Very, Very is a very, very, very catchy song. And I also love that mv. Every time I watch it I notice something new. It's Ic On Ic. It's good to see that you enjoy "quirky" mv's. It makes me look forward even more to when you will react to Orange Caramel one day. - Downpour will just always hit me in the feels 😭 It's a beautiful song, but it also reflects how sad we all were (and still are dammit) that they had to disband 😭 I'm still hopeful of them coming back together one day πŸ™ The girls are still quite close with each other and most of them already meet up on IOI anniversary days. They all have expressed they want to get back together. Yes, even the ones that now have very successful solo careers. If I recall correctly, Chungha has even said she would pick IOI over her solo.
