The sketch process

I've been trying to get back into a habit that has seriously helped me in the past. Maybe it was due to laziness or the fear of a bad drawing, but I forced myself anyway.

I've found that doing the "quick and dirty" level of sketching gives a base to work off of which has much more focus. Normally I'd just try to jump into the main sketch, but I've discovered that should be "Phase 2".

This piece is half of a new page I am currently working on. The super sloppy sketches at the top were done in maybe 5+ minutes. The point is to simply be "cameraman" and try to find the shot, rhythm, and feel with little pressure. I allow myself to make sloppy and bad drawings, which ends up giving me a solid blueprint to draw over on the second pass.

Not only does it help focus the drawing more, but I actually have a bit more fun! I'm spending more time on getting that "perfect" feel rather than battling the brutal basics of getting the angle that I want, Picasso heads, and what not haha. Sometimes the shots change slightly, but they're mostly what I intended. This is where the visual storytelling really takes hold.

Anyway, just thought I'd share so you can see Phase 1 to Phase 2. Phase 3 will be line art, in which I get one more chance to clean up the drawing even more... then color / rendering.

As you can see, Arlo has got himself into a bit of trouble. Archer ain't having it. XD
