Popular Artists

I hope this could help all the debutant webcomics artists out there who want to be popular on social medias.

As a webcomics creator, just like many young creators on Instagram, I often ask myself this question: if I could draw better, will I be more popular?

After examining many popular webcomics accounts on Instagram, I started to see a pattern... a similar trait, and it is so obvious:

All it matters is the story you tell, great drawing is just a bonus. (unless you're an illustrator)

That's it. It is the absolute truth. It's all about story telling.

And I'm curious about your opinion. What do you think? In an era where social medias dictate the popularity of any artist, does great art (drawing skills) really matter? Or a good story is enough to attract millions of readers?

If you look all the way back to the first Episodes you'll realise your drawing changed a lot and for better. I think mimesis is good for some artists and certain kind of stories and characters. That seems to be the case here. Drawing better in your case means being able to convey a more complex palette of feelings and reactions which is highly positive on dealing with entire short tales and dramas composed within some pictures. I love when you mix codes too, shifting from your clear line to manga and other comic "idioms" according to the plot. Sorry for writing too much.

And even if you get overlooked by creators who doesn’t even make their story good and just meh, just keep being you with how you roll with your creativity. Because each and every one of us is different on this planet , and you don’t have to do something someone else is doing.

I’m sure people likes uniqueness over copy and paste. Having a original story and uniqueness of art and style is what makes you popular, because people who likes it with vibe with you. I know this is far from the subject of comics, but just like with video games and movies... what makes them popular is the story and everything that comes with it.

Stefen C

I think it’s the story , but he has to be from personal life that people can relate too and identify them self.

I think its the content of your comics that will make you famous. And you have good ones. Just give it time

I love your work because I connect with it, as a gay guy with almost none loving life, it gives a sweet treat of entertainment. Btw.... I would kill to be able to draw like you.

Song, I for one, love your drawing! It certainly helps that we have a special affection for you and Joe and your loving relationship. You’re tops in my book!

I think it has to be a combination of the two - art and story. There are some comics that I don't pay any attention to because of their artistic renderings. Something has to garner my attention and it is usually the art first.

Wiliam Kibler

Totally agree. It's the same with TheOdd1sOut channel on YouTube. I love his story telling, the drawing is bonus ;)

It's both for me. It's true that I tend to gravitate towards the story but it should have at least decent drawing, be it in comical style or realistic style.

I love your drawings and I love the stories you tell. They're so relatable and engaging that I'm always left hungry for more, and excited to see what you'll create next ❤️

One of the reasons I'm a supporter is the excellent quality of your drawing. I don't look at poorly drawn comics, no matter how good the story is. Yours have editorial as well as visual humor.

You could easily make this subject a senior thesis, so what little I say here is going to be wholly inadequate. First, "Simple" isn't the same as "Simplistic." I don't know the comics you referenced so I'm going to use a different example. Take the wonderful comic book series BONE. The art is simple but far from simplistic. It's far more sophisticated than it initially appears because it's black and white, and the characters and environments are created using a minimal line structure. The stories told in BONE take place in a fantasy world meant to appeal to both children and adults. In other words, the story and the art match perfectly. If the writing is of a type that could exist entirely on its own without any artwork at all, then even stick figures will work to convey the point. Pairing the story with hyper detailed art isn't going improve the impact of that story much. Of course, it will some, but not that much. However much the story or the art can coney the story alone, the two have to work together to make a cohesive work that is enjoyable to read as well as view. Your art is beautiful, and your writing is personal and heartfelt, and they come together to make something more than just the sum of their parts.

Here's an additional point of data: Yehuda Devir has 2,8 millions of followers, and his drawings are well-crafted like yours. https://www.instagram.com/jude_devir/ All of the top creators you listed don't just tell good stories. They work very hard to craft "relatable" jokes that are super easy for their audiences to identify with and share with other audiences. They are "mainstream" family-friendly, English language, internet humor. And despite being easier to craft, all of those creators also work very hard. Shen is an interesting case: he is often less family friendly, but Americans like bad language and violence while being terrified of nudity and sex. We're hypocrites like that, and I'm sorry that American hypocrisy has hurt your career. Finally, don't forget luck. There are plenty of people who make comics similar to the ones listed, and many of them are quite good! But they never made the right joke at the right time to go viral. You've never heard of them, and they are struggling with the same questions as you are. If you change your art or comics, please make sure they are changes which you like or love. I support you because your comics are NOT like others I've seen AND because you clearly love making them.

Even the simplest of lines drawn, take great skill. I look at your strips, and I see beautiful art work. Yes, the stories you tell keep me waiting for each strip (it's the highlight of my day), but so often, you can tell us the mood of your character with one carefully placed facial line. When telling stories (visually, or with words), sometimes "less is more". I love your use of your "emojis" to express mood or thought, or what your character is truly feeling. All amazing artists/story tellers (Calvin & Hobbes, The Oatmeal, Tin Tin) all used their skills to combine their artistic talent with the stories they wanted to tell, but it's a careful balance. Too many words in the speech bubble, or too much art work in the frame, could detract away from what you are trying to tell. Keep up the amazing work SONG, I love your art work, I love your stories. When I feel sad, I come here to make me feel happy and laugh. :-)

I dont think so great art push it. Like u said before. Its just a bonus. The important are u can make a relate story through ur draw. And what market is yours. Example market for children, so u make a relate market for them, etc.

Michaelicious

I agree with you, I see comics that I find so basic and yet the artist has so many followers. For me I have to enjoy both, the story and the drawings, and you are the only one for me who has both.

Dana Tudor

For me personally, it’s more about the individual style of every artist that makes them interesting. Your drawing style and your storytelling is more complex and intricate than other popular artists, and that’s part of your identity as an artist and something that makes you unique. I don’t go to other artists looking for the same content, and since yours is about your life and your drawing style is beautiful, it really leaves an impression.

As Dolly Parton says it’s all about the song the rest is window dressing. Am sure that the way of comics. I love beautiful comics and will sometimes only be attracted by the illustrations. But eventually I go back for the story. If the story is good will read it over and over again. Then I go over every detail of illustration to follow the story. Fall in love with comic all over again. That is why I support you. Some of your stories are amazing.

Danny Provencio

I think story telling is a really good talent that should be shared with everyone. However, as a struggling artist, it's annoying to see so many simplistic and sometimes even not great artists get so much exposure and followers, yet those who put a lot of effort into their art get left in the dust.

Stephanie Martin

Daily life of a Gay Couple comic strip is very relatable and entertaining. Your amazing illustration to back up the story line makes it a complete package ❤ 🌈 💯

Dennis Dela Cruz

It's both. The story is what we relate to, much more than the picture. Yet the picture is what attracts people to the story. I mean the portrayal of the story in a picture. For instance, there are many posts which are just text which get no followers or very few. When those texts are presented with a picture, they get a far greater response. So the pictures are important, but as a way of furthering the story. In your own case, we would never know how absolutely effing smoking hot your boyfriend is if you did not draw him for us. Plus, I do not think those stick figure cartoons could express the joy of sex that your drawings convey.

I don't think so, I mean this is for kids!!! The way you do your comics is awesome, you are a genius but! If you see their material you will see they are all the same, talking about tacos, talking about how they don't care the world and those thinks! You talk about something totally different !!! My english is not the best one, but I guess you will understand what I'm trying to say!!!

I think the art is nice, and you draw beautifully, but in terms of small snippet type comics like yours and the others you showed, the story is what is important. What’s so lovely about your comics (and those others) is that it’s completely relatable! You show real life as it happens to you and as an audience we enjoy them because we can almost see ourselves in those situations. You and your comics are amazing. I hope you always know that.

Kathryn Gynn

Always the story. The story is the soul of your drawings. ;) good luck buddy. :)

Quality artwork is important to me, not just story. I appreciate your level of drawing, Song!
