Wintergatan 2

Hey all Wonderful Wintergatan Patrons, Cheers for 2021!

I have started a second youtube Channel, Wintergatan 2, where we are doing an experiment with posting simpler videos showing the day to day Marble Machine X Progress.

So far this week we have published three videos, check them out here:
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCskyt8vo4SRDs4lKF7_ObSw

Many of you might wonder why i am trying this or why i am not posting these videos to the main channel, so i´d like to share my thoughts with you here.

Different videos for different audiences
The Main channel is reaching out to a very wide audience, with varying interest levels in the Marble Machine X project. Some parts of the audience would like to see as much as possible from the process, other parts of the audience are more interested in the top level perspective, the occasional progress updates.

The latest video format with the Marble tests has been successful in the sense that the context of these videos is so simple. Regardless of prior knowledge, everyone understands the basic premise of "lets play 50000 marbles and hope none fails".

But, the marble test videos have left a lot of the process leading up to the tests out.

On Wintergatan 2 i want to portrait and share the process more closely with the core audience who are interested in the details behind the marble tests. It is easier to do do whatever i want and create building videos that can be more true to how the building process actually unfolds.

If Wintergatan 2 proves to be a force for good, if it helps me crossing that finish line, i will keep posting videos there often. If i realize it works against the mission of the Marble Machine X World Tour, i will re-assess.

Thank you

You all have been out-of-this-world generous in the way you have supported me and the mission. Each and every one of you have helped me get to this spot.
I feel like Frodo climbing mount doom but with 8000 Samwises carrying me uphill.

One tool to rule them all!

BTW have you noticed that the angle grinding has stopped on the main channel? Since my redesign i havent had the need to angle grind stuff away anymore, i am taking that as a good omen. :)

Have a great day everyone/ Martin

OK, so the goals have changed, pretty much as expected and now there'll be an MMX-T project to create a tour-able version of the machine. Anything that takes a bunch of tiny adjustments to not blow up is bad, if you have to ship it. The MMX-T needs to be portable and robust, and if it's not as interestingly quirky as everyone might want, that's really OK. It should retain the basic layout and instruments, otherwise it's just a synthesizer. But maybe the quirky aesthetic bits can be nearby the actual machine, not necessarily part of it? If some cool-looking bit starts dropping marbles in the middle of the show, well, try to keep it from interfering with the instruments. "Looks cool" can be entirely separated from "makes music", yet when it's on stage, it can look like it's one machine. Then you can have kinetic fingers and magnetized marbles and other "marble run" things, and just park the instrument next to it and play the show.

Did Martin's head finally explode? I miss the videos. I've watched you long enough to know that you get to a point where the angle grinder isn't enough and you have to fundamentally rethink entire parts of the machine. But We Believe and we would like to know if 1) You are OK and 2) What your plans are, Doesn't have to be elaborate, doesn't need to have marbles and/or angle grinders ...

I totally agree with StefanP.

I agree with StefanP; my weekly dose of Wintergatan Wednesdays was something I very much looked forward to.

Dear Martin, as Jörgen mentioned: I miss the regular videos. What should I do with hours of live streaming? I do not have the time to look at awesome 5h marble testing. Where are the summary videos? This was the essential of my contribution to you, to see you making fun in the videos. Thx for understanding

Muy cool tu trabajo

Hi Martin, I have been a patrion contributer for quite a while and love the music you make. I do think you should include more videos with music. But also lately there is very few videos. Sometimes mot even one per week. I am always looking forwardcto them and feel abstines without them. Looking forward to the next one. Regards Jörgen

Love all the videos. I dabble in software design in my spare time and I see so many parallels with your struggle. Bugs and edge cases, redesigns and I even see the angle grinder in my software projects. You have inspired me in so many ways! I love the amazing Wintergatan music, the videos are funny, inspiring even moving when I feel your pain of doubts and fear. The MMX is an artwork in so many ways! And you are the Elon Musk of art. Keep it up, and I can’t wait for all your future art!

Yes! Exactly. I dont care that the videos are a bit more rugged and have a bit more "crunch". This feels just about right given the character of the general project!

I didn't even know it, but Wintergarten 2 is just what I've been waiting for! I always enjoy the videos you put out on the process for the MMX. I get why you don't want to share all of that on the original Wintergarten channel.. all I can say is the MMX nerd in me is overjoyed. It's cool to see some extra details on fusion 360, and the day to day stuff. I'm sure I could get more of a fix if I would get onto discord but I feel like this is better :) thank you

Keep it up. This is a massive project, which is beautiful. On the other hand, if your sanity is strained, I can't say to keep going. Your art is great even without this. I personally prefer this, but that's just me. As long as you are still going, I love that you are still going

Agree with Lars and Paul! Don't give up!!!! you're moving so much faster now. As us old grumps say, "What doesn't kill us, makes us stronger!" . The light is **really** at the end of the tunnel. Very happy that you are publishing (almost?) every day, it is really something to look forward to. don't give up!!!

These new videos are fantastic, even though you are getting to the end of your tether :( please keep going, and have faith :) we believe!!! 😁😁

New year is time for taking score. In 2020 my favourite entertainment - Netflix, HBO and NRK 🇳🇴 included - was your YouTube posts Martin. I love everything about this project and how you present it. Thank you!

I really enjoy the shorter, new videos with quick updates. I’ve followed along since the first MMX video and been great to see the move from that small container, to workshop to France. I’m proud to be supporting your journey and think you’re an amazing musician, artist, engineer and a really good soul & human being. Hilsen fra Norge🇳🇴

Thank you! My husband and I like your new second channel videos!

Noella Grady

I love the new channel! Thanks Martin for sharing this marvelous adventure with us all. I’m looking forward to the day that you can do a world tour, hopefully you will come to the US. Thanks again

What? There have been multiple new WG videos on s secondary channel? How did I miss that?! 😱

You do you, but I *do* find it amusing that you cut back on videos so you could concentrate on building and now you are starting a 2nd channel to provide more videos so you can keep momentum. I really don't care - I love all the videos and, like you, I Believe. Just don't burn yourself out!

Peter Laws

> One tool to rule them all! That must be a CNC? Or the backers? Cryptic ;-)

Yes, I still agree with your words and I will also say that this is a good sign))) I think things are going right for you!

VitAnyaNaked

I am enjoying the secondary channel! Observing intelligent people at work has always been a fascination of mine, and Wintergatan 2 provides me with an opportunity to see how you work more closely which is awesome! Ultimately you should do works for you to get you to the finish line; everything else is icing on the cake. I am very grateful that you are keeping you audiences in mind though! Thank you very much for being so thoughtful! :)

Exciting, and so inspiring! Thanks for sharing the good AND the bad. Have you considered publishing on Nebula or some other platform that ... well ... not YouTube? Not exclusively, but in addition to the existing platforms.

Hi Martin, that sounds great. Already seen the new videos :). For the record, I have seen the Marble Machine video since it first came up but after that, i have lost your tracks and found you again a few weeks ago. Since then i have been an avid follower of your channel. Your work is remarkable and very exciting! Your channel is the first i have been a patreon ever, just because i see the sparkle in your eyes (most of the times..) and you also seem like a deep thinking person. I hope to manage to see you and the rest of the group for a concert at Copenhagen or somewhere in Scandinavia this decade ;). Cheers/Stavros

Really love the new channel and updates, I have been following you and the MMX since the start. So glad you are making progress, keep up the great work and thank you so much for sharing your journey with us! Mike

Great! Thanks for the detailed explanation of all this. Glad that everything is going well

RAG MASTER

I really enjoyed the less produced nature of the Wintergatan2 channel, it feels like we are seeing another aspect of your journey with the MMX. Although it is great to see more of what is going on with the MMX, I do hope that over time the focus remains on progressing with the machine rather than on making videos. As great as it has been to look over the shoulder of an artist/engineer throughout this project, I can feel the music getting closer.

I’m loving the detailed updates, and hope the “Wintergatan 2” channel experiment works out without slowing down progress! Ewen

Thanks for the update!

Hey Felix, thanks! And great question, the project halted because of me being perfectionistic with the designs. There were so many great suggestions and i am having two tshirts that i have testprinted, but i started to have second thoughts about print placement etcetera. Im having way too high demands on a tshirt - i think there is too much merch in the world and i want the wintergatan t-shirts to be like so great up until the point where it gets hard to ship the work :). So, you didnt miss an update, thanks for reminding me i should mention this in a video soon for everyone else that also are wondering

Thats really nice to hear, thank you Jeff! Say hi to your Wife as well :)

the project manager was a special spieces of animal only living one summer :)

haha, maybe good for the machine it broke down :) thank you!

Love the new channel! Speaking of angle grinder: what happened to the t-shirt designs with Wilson and the angle grinder? Did I miss an update?

My wife and I have been following along since the very beginning of the build. We were super-excited to see the new channel come up and love that we get to watch a MMX video every day now. Wintergatan Wednesdays are something we have long looked forward to, so now we feel really spoiled. Keep up the great work. We are with you until the end -- and beyond!

Zero time on non-building, I hope this doesn't mean that Project Manager Butterfly has turned back the clock to the pupal stage. 😂

Maarten Daalder

Well, it was either not needing to use the angle grinder any more or burning them all out... :) Seriously, this is really cool, and I'm glad that things are moving in a positive direction for you.
