Testing E-Bow on the Ondophone Prototype

Hi Everyone! I improvised a quick and dirty behind the scenes video for you showing a test using e-bow on the ondophone prototype 1.

As I keep repeating in the video, this is not the intended ondophone sound, just having fun with it and wanted to share with you. Thank you for being here and take care! // Martin

Good to see you are ondophoning safely. You never know when you may get a ondophone flash to the eyes😉

I feel into the vibe completely Haha!

build a driver coil in to the body or the neck

So awesome can't wait to see what music you will come up for it!

Beautiful sound, already as it is!! Looking forward for a song (or Klaus Schulze-like album ;-) of it's own!

That tune is so beautiful! Even if you are "just having fun with it"! Create more music please! We are almost starving ;-)

I love this. In the last post you asked for suggestions for perks for patreon donors and I think this is perfect. It doesn't need to be much, but short updates between Wintergatan Wednesdays would be an excellent perk that still avoids the sort of exclusivity that can divide so many internet communities. Keep up the awesome work, we ALL have faith in you. <3

For a test run this sounds great. As someone wrote before me, it sounds a little bit like the synth from Blade Runner

That thing just sounds awesome. It's still a prototype but it's actually already very cool

Waw, cool sound. You can be the next Vangelis :-)

Thanks for sharing Martin! Loved this on many levels; great piece of music, so much emotion and tranquil - please share this!!! Great to see behind the scenes. Great that you did not edit it (good on you :)) And welding mask...

It looks like a great prototype -- and seems to be achieving what you want from a prototype: prove that the idea makes sense, and give you practical experience from which to design the real version! I like the sound produced already, so I'm sure the final version will be amazing. Thanks for the BTS look into something "in progress" (and all the fantastic weekly build videos). Ewen

Love that sound as it is with the enforced distortion. should definatly be a part of the intraments sound pallet.

I wish I had even a minuscule fraction of the talent you possess! I’m so honored to be able to help you create such works of genius.

Elizabeth Schneider

I’ve always been surprised that Martin doesn’t have a Theremin. They probably aren’t that easy to come by though, so I guess the Modulin is close. The Theremin will always be unique in that you’re “playing air”.

Elizabeth Schneider

Cool. I like it.

Tay Moss

I laughed at how you are playing wearing a welding mask! Why? ...... I can imagine it, but ... I can not yet imagine how to play the ondophone on MMX, but do you expect features like theremin and modulin? MMX production is progressing steadily! I always look forward to the Wintergatan Wednesday, but please do not be afraid to overdo it. Good luck! ! Fumiyo Nishi

Oops! Hate typing sideways with this tablet of mine and Patreon always on its side. Anyway, a live jam with MMX with plethora of instruments to choose from would be way cool... Gary...

Hi again.... Motor thing could be aq good project for someone familiar with motors/controllers/digital stuff, so wouldn't take up much of your time. Can envision a solo performance with just you annd the MMX in appropriate venue. Could see a table or rqack full of instruments and improvising stuff as

Gary Guttebo

Hi.... How about a harpsichord like quill for plucking string. Could be hand or foot activated, or even a marble drop, or some combination thereof. Love the fingers that work with marble drop mechanism. Some concern that steady tempo will begin to suffer with added load on flywheel mass momentum. Suggest adding a motor with brainbox driver that can take over from hand crank and maintain steady speed (tempo) so that hands and feet) are left free to express themselves in other ways. A press of a button (or pedal board switch) can engage/disengage motor whenever necessary. Also would allow solo performer to accompany MMX on a variety of instruments w/o having to be cranking all the time. Cool to be able to jam with MMX when you are by yourself in the workshop/garage (or on stage, for that matter...). Gary..

Maybe this will offer some inspiration...MechBass... https://youtu.be/5UYMnzXQEtw

Try palm blocking to mute the tones

👍👍👍 Sounds great!

Cool sound....and in your hands..music 😎

awesome

Cristian Foxy Tejada

It's like a reverse pickup. It generates a moving magnetic field which vibrates the string, having an effect similar to the bow of a violin.

First thing this reminded me of, is Jordan Rudess' solo at the start of Octavarium and the way he plays it on the Octavarium DVD.

Julian Gonggrijp

That sounds SO GOOD! It sounds like something straight out of Blade Runner, one of my favorite movies. I'll actually be a little sad if the final version is *less* distorted than that, as the distortion sounds so wicked!

Matt Whitlock

Your fingernail is VERY similar to a guitar pick unless you have that bad habit of biting your nails; then you can go and get a fingerpick; the techno version is, of course, some kind of harpsichord action.

The unedited videos are what the patrons love! That second harmonic switch on the ebow is great, I've gotten adept at flicking it mid-note on the guitar with my right hand ring finger to kick those notes into a scream after they peak.

If only Messiaen had known about this instrument!

Dan Swinehart

Now make one that moves autonomously. Auto-Ebow!

Dan Swinehart

All of them. (Indeed, he even plays instruments no one else in the world plays because he created them.)

Ascetic

Can you make a single string piano escapement and mute? Sounds like that'd solve the problems you mentioned.

Al Hunt

Martin, It looks like it's down to fine tuning. Will you be including tribute music in your concert? Songs like Black Bird would sound fantastic on the Machine. I do think Sommarfågel is my favorite, well wait, MUSIC BOX is the best. Sandviken Stradivarius is by far your best. I cant make up my mind... They are all great... Cant wait to hear the Marble Machine 2 song..

That's better than main episode. Great music and interesting instrument!

what is the e-Bow doing? I'm curious, cause i don't know.

dwarfnose

Love it. I've had an eBow for years and don't use it nearly enough. Very innovative use of it, even if not the intended use with this particular instrument.

Stephen W. Evans

Always a good idea to wear a welding helmet when making music. Those notes can fly out and smash you in the face when you're least expecting it. Personally, I wear a proper vintage divers helmet (circa 1880) when I play my guitar. You can never be too safe...

Steve Z

Ohh, it sounds like Blade Runner and I'm all for it! Very nice!

Fantastically ethereal! I've always loved the theremin (and the Modulin!) in your songs, and it looks like the ondophone will sound very similar to those two. Thank you for the cool sneak peek!

Martin, I lost count. HOW MANY Instruments do you play?!?

Hubert

Indeed, great sound!

Hubert

I'm really digging this Yes cover you're playing

Shame Boy

Very satisfied after watching this! Sounds amazing!

Abllo

I don’t care that this was not the intended sound. This sound is really amazing!
