Starting on the instruments (at last!)

Hey all, I am just taking the first proper measurements of the vibraphone plates I bought for the MMX, these are real vibraphone plates unlike the more feeble versions I used on the first machine. There are only 11 places for Vibraphone plates on the machine but I am designing holders that makes it possible to switch notes between songs, to open up for songs in any keys and other scales. We can for example put a lot of octaves of the same notes if we want to make some cool arpeggio and leave out over notes from the scale.

When changing a vibraphone plate we also need to adjust the resonator pipe for the new frequency/pitch. This makes it slightly complicated but I have an idea on how to solve that.

I have been procrastinating this moment for so long but its not until recently that I know these three things:

I am sure the marble lifting system works, I am sure the marble divider works and I am sure the marble dropping system works.

So ready to start making final decisions for instrument placement! At last.

This week I will also start to machine the new quarter programming plates. Its a daunting task and I might even make it into a mini series on youtube with more in depth videos on each step for these plates. I have been watching so much Abom79 lately and getting a big fan of his way of covering a machining process where you get to follow every step. Maybe I take some inspiration from Adam in how I cover the work with these programming plates.

Just a nice example of Abom79:

I always like to experiment with the video formats a little to find new ways of doing them.

We have just started to work with some of the new people from my “do you want to help me finish the MMX” video from some time ago - going through the applications took a long time and get going with new collaborations is also slow but we are up and running and it is awesome. Things are happening on many places over the world right now, I will present them all and their work in a video in a while.

I want to say a BIG thank you to all new Patrons and Youtube Channel Members, you all are making a very big difference for me and the projects and I am incredible proud I do not have to accept sponsor offers and that the Wednesdays are Crowdfunded, thank you. It brings me serious joy to do this a little differently than everybody else!

Good luck with everything you do and have a great day!

Any chance you could share model of the bars and tubes?

oops.... still going...... If using vibraphone setup like original MM then perhaps a muting mechanism that will mute all the plates and at the same time apply a pickup to each and every plate so that a marble striking a plate will trigger a sampled or synthesized sound. The visual effect will be the same, but can change instruments during a performance. This ability may be able to be added to the MMX at a later date, perhaps, after the first tour..., j

still thinking... may need to include marble catchers with each module as different materials will probably hav different 'rebound' characteristics. Probably should have the 'catchers' a part of the replaceable modules, with a common 'drain' outlet. Can be somewhat creative with the 'catching' mechanisms (size, shape, movement, materials, animations, etc.) to go along with the song being played.

Hi.... How about an entire vibraphone module (plates, tubes (and any other necessary parts) that lifts in and out of trhe MMX. Can have several pre-confiugured for different songs and just switch them out as a unit. May save a lot of time during a show and less to go wrong. Can also have other types of percussive instruments that can quickly be changed out during a show: marimba (wood plates) chimes trigger plate(s) for a synthesized or sampled sound any type of percussion sound maker or any combination of instruments that will fit the module.

I was also to suggest a sliding tube arrangement just like in a pipe organ.

Hey Martin! Thanks for the mention! I really enjoy your work, productions and creativity. The Moon video was amazing!

Abom79

Keep up the good work!

Martin as a suggestion with the vibraphone tubes, you could implement a sliding tube arrangement to quickly retune the tubes to match the note in question

Why not create a cartridge system. Have a standard carrier that holds a pipe and plate. Then you just drop them in place where desired. Add a magnetically driven disc for the vibration and then you can make them infinitely interchangeable. Could also allow you to have carriers with different kinds of plates such as say xylophone or bells or chimes

Martin, I don’t know much about the concept myself, but perhaps it would help to look into how a radio uses a coupler to be able to transmit different frequencies on the same antenna. Or how waveguides work. I would imagine the concept applies to sound as well.
