UNCUT | The Goodbye Girl (1977) Movie Reaction | FIRST TIME WATCHING

Hi all! We're back with another favourite film of yours in the requests, it's "The Goodbye Girl" (1977).

Thank you for this one! I loved it. Their relationship coming from the tough situation they were both in and seeing them grow together was fantastic.

Both Richard Dreyfuss and Marsha Mason play impeccable roles in this. Plus, Quinn Cummings is a standout supporting character, being brilliantly quick witted.

I hope you really enjoy this one as much as I did!

Take care and have a lovely day

Sadly this is true for both bad AND good ideas 😉

Blood test for marriage. Used to be required.

For Paula's age: remember she's a dancer. A dancer's career is very short, and for a dancer, at least at this time, 33 was old.

Reviews could come out the very next day after opening night. And yes, so often, the actor pays for the ideas of the director or production demands.

He can't tone it down: it's what the director wanted. The director is played by delightful supporting player Richard Benedict, who pops up all over the place during this time, in movies and tv.

Here, by the way, here is the gold standard at the time, Sir Laurence Olivier giving that iconic opening monologue: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-5JF9Gq5tL4 And for fun, Peter Sellers giving an impression of the same, with lyrics from a Beatles song, as only Peter Sellers could: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TIjqpoKz4eQ (that's Paul and John of the Beatles giving that quick intro).

In the play, Richard woos Anne Neville, mostly as part of a vast political plot, but, yes, he wants her. In history, Richard and Anne seemed to have been happily married, and ruled the North of England. Anne's father had been a powerful noble who had first supported, then turned against Richard's brother Edward IV of England. Anne died at age 28, probably of Tuberculosis. Richard's opponent for England, Henry Tudor, who became Henry VII, engineered stories of the relationship and other things to make Richard as demonic as possible, in order to help shore up his own shaky position. That's how Shakespeare came to write his play --- which is an amazing piece of work, just not, you know, history.

As a member of the Richard III Society, I am obliged to tell you that Shakespeare's Richard is almost entirely fiction ..... and the homosexuality is a theory of the director.

Neil Simon was the master of this sort of relationship. His masterpiece is "The Odd Couple", which on Broadway starred Walter Matthau and Art Carney; in the movie, Matthau and Jack Lemmon; and it became a successful tv series starring Jack Klugman and Tony Randall.
