The Pacific - Part Seven | FULL LENGTH REACTION

Another harrowing episode, but the series really has grown on me a lot. It's just devastating to see, and I wish this was an interactive series where I could ask questions, or click a link to know more.

Also, thank you for the great comments that expand on the episodes, answer some of my questions or even just add a bit more information that I didn't think to ask!!

For this style of reaction, you need your own copy to watch the movie.  You can set picture in picture by right clicking twice on the video and selecting "Picture in picture". The right clicking twice is a bit tricky, because you have to right click, then move your cursor so it's not on the menu, then right click again

They even show Gump being a tunnel a rat in Forrest Gump. The scene with the Colt 9/11 (.45 cal pistol) and flashlight and dive into the hole to make sure it is clear. The only college professor I was ever scared of was Dr Reynolds, Army Ranger Tunnel Rat taught my upper division meteorology course. Well after 1st test class average was 55 (Thank GOD I got a 75!). But some guy said well maybe your test is too hard. Seated two desk in front of me. The look that Dr Reynolds gave him made even me a combat vet even at the time get up and move 2 rows over. Just no, do not include me this. The look in the eyes of anger/hatred/ barely suppressed violence made ME blink! I Got up and up moved two rows to the left. Just nope. Do not direct your hate on me. NO, NO NO.

So about the question of the caves.....to my knowledge the Marines and Soldiers when coming upon a cave entrance was not to explore it but rather to seal it up with explosives. I remember reading some accounts where they used flame throwers and sachel pouches (explosives) to close up one entrance only to see smoke rise from several other entrances. The Japanese worked long and hard turning these islands into formidable positions in which to fight. In most cases these entrances were heavily armed and defended and the only way to move forward was to destroy the positions, making it virtually impossible to go in and search. Many of the Japanese that died on these islands are still entombed in these caves and pillboxes. You asked about tunnels when Sledge and his team were next to the bunker.....not all bunkers were attached to the tunnels. After this island was taken Sledge and his division did indeed go back to the island where he saw his friend. Unrelated to the Pacific and WW 2 in the Vietnam War the North Vietnamese and Viet Cong used tunnels as well. We had soldiers known as tunnel rats that would actually go in these tunnels. It was extremely dangerous as you had no idea where they went or who you may run across....in most cases these tunnel rats only had a flashlight and a pistol, no rifle, because of how narrow the tunnels were.

If you want to know about how Intel works you can ask me if you have any specific questions just ask me. I was an Imagery Analyst but thanks to Fusion cells trying to tie everything together good friends with linguist HUMIT, ELINT (electronic), COMMIT (comms radio traffic)+CYBER etc. Think of it trying to put a jigsaw puzzle together. But you do not have all the pieces. The other side is not dumb and are trying to deceive you. Make a call one way and you blamed. Intel was wrong you suck. Make it the other way and you ignored for political reasons/pride of the commander or even hey you were wrong the last time. Why should I believe you now? Then think of me that was on the ground as well trying to unfornicate stuff. The memories, the thoughts. I was wrong here. It is still a stone around your neck. I was right in this place and time but I was not charismatic enough to make people listen. Add another millstone. Then deal with that burden and aftermath being blamed by everybody. One day I hope to get a nights sleep without waking up to a nightmare. I do not see it happening. How can I ever forgive myself for the stuff I have done?
