K-19: The Widowmaker (2002) * FULL LENGTH REACTION

This reaction is brought to you by one of our Producers!!!

Harrison Ford and Liam Neeson in the same movie? I was not expecting that, I sort of assumed they would always be the lead in their own movies and not share the spotlight 😂

Despite me being skeptical about Harrison Ford, I quite liked him in this role. I don't think there was much acting needed, but that's fine.

I'm still super happy that I recognized Peter Sarsgaard (now that I know that's his name).

I think it was well done, and I was immersed in the story, so good job everyone that made this film! I do think that all the actors in that submarine were great, they really made it an ensemble.

For this style of reaction, you need your own copy to watch the movie.  You can set picture in picture by right clicking twice on the video and selecting "Picture in picture". The right clicking twice is a bit tricky, because you have to right click, then move your cursor so it's not on the menu, then right click again

Thank you so much everyone for your support, I couldn't do this without you đŸ„°

JAKH

That's the general idea that I got. He did not seem very happy at all lol

Verowak

Oh I would need to see diagrams and read up on everything pertaining to submarines to understand how it works lol I'm a very visual learner and have to look things up as I find out new things 😅

Verowak

I think the suspense build up is pretty nice in this. Though Harrison Ford was in Star Wars OT, it still surprises me to see he's been in more movies that were made in the 70s, I don't know why lol

Verowak

Vero - You mentioned several times in the reaction that you don't know how submarines work. Do you have any more specific question? I don't want to ramble on and end up not answering your questions.

JAKH

Liam Neeson's character, Capt 3rd Rank Polenin, was fictional, but based on a real person, Vasily Arkhipov, who was 2nd in command during the real K-19 incident. Arkhipov was involved in another Soviet nuclear incident the following year, where he is now credited with preventing a WW3 nuclear exchange. PBS documentary series "Secrets of the Dead" episode "The Man Who Saved the World" on YouTube in US https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KH0m96P1feI Arkhipov's bio: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vasily_Arkhipov

JAKH

Liam Neeson and Harrison Ford are both referred to as "Captain" because of the way the Soviet rank names differ from English (US & UK/Commonwealth). Harrison Ford is "Captain 2nd Rank", which is the equivalent of English "Captain", while Liam Neeson is "Captain 3rd Rank" which is the equivalent of English "Commander". Below that, there is no "Lieutenant Commander". Instead the Soviets use "Captain-Lieutenant". In the end scene at the memorial, Harrison Ford is wearing the rank of "Captain 1st Rank", which is the equivalent of English "Commodore" or "Rear Admiral, Lower Half".

JAKH

In the first scene, Liam Neeson blames the missile test failure on a "30 kopeck insulator to do a 50 kopeck job". A kopek is a small unit of Russian coins. 100 kopecks = 1 ruble. so he is basically complaining that either the Navy is penny-pinching to save inconsequential amounts, or saying that someone in the supply or manufacturing chain is skimming by supplying sub-standard parts and pocketing the difference.

JAKH

Doesn't work in Canada either unless my VPN connects to the US lol this trick also works for some streaming services 😇

Verowak

your question about height: Liam Neeson is hunched over in the submarine because he is 6' 4" (193cm) tall. Harrison Ford is 6' 1" (186cm)

JAKH

Appreciate it, mate. But that doesn't work for me here in Ireland.

Haven't see this in a while, relationship ability is a little low but with time that goes up to allow the suspense of the movie to have it's full intended affect. Reminded me of one of my favorite non star wars/indy ford movies, Force 10 from Navarone. Him and Robert Shaw made a good pair there.

Bubba Fett

I was able to watch on peacock, I do have to add free premium but there is a free option as well with ads. Not everything is available though but worth the check as well.

Bubba Fett

I'll look into that. Thanks!

jim Howe

If you're in the USA or can VPN to the US, the movie is free with ads on YouTube. I usually just write "K19 the widowmaker movie" in the YT search bar and it shows up :)

Verowak

Wow! Haven't seen this films in god knows how long. I remember it being good, but I'll have to wait for the YT edit as I don't know where my copy of it is. So, looking forward to that one.
