Men in Black (1997) * FULL LENGTH REACTION

Here come the Men in Black!!

I knew some stuff about this movie, but seemed to have forgotten about it, then as I was watching, I remembered hearing about them.

Tommy Lee Jones was great, and I'm going to have to watch some of his other stuff.  As for Will Smith... I will give his non comedy roles a chance, but probably stay away from any comedic role he does.

An entertaining movie nonetheless, it leaves me curious about the sequels, but with K retiring... I'm not too inclined to watch them.

For this style of reaction, you need your own copy to watch the movie.  Also know there is an extension that allows you to do Picture-in-Picture in case you are interested: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/picture-in-picture-extens/hkgfoiooedgoejojocmhlaklaeopbecg?hl=en

Men in Black (1997) * FULL LENGTH REACTION

Comments

No Hurry but MIB 2 has agent K back trying to get his memory back to save yada yada. Agent K carries it again and worth a watch. The rest of the MIB you can safely ignore. Like the new Indiana Jones movies or Disney Star Wars movies (not the TV shows). Everything is better if they just do not exist. :)

Daniel Looney

I couldn't tell from your reaction if you picked up in the opening credits that this is from a Marvel comic book.

JAKH

Will Smith does comedy better when he has someone funny to play off of. If the costar/partner is a straight-man or is better at dry humor, then he falls short. He is also better at action roles. Try these: "Bright" (2017) the first NetFlix Original with a big-name star. More action, less comedy, with an unusual setting. At the very least, I think that the setting would appeal to V. "Bad Boys" (1995) action-comedy. Summer action movie by Michael Bay "Independence Day" (1996) sci-fi action-comedy. Summer action movie by Dean Devlin & Roland Emmerich "Bad Boys 2" (2003) action-comedy

JAKH

@ PlaidGriffin - At the base when Cap finds out Bucky is MIA and when they return from the rescue - Interrogating Red Skull's scientist lackey after the train scenes - Driving the car chasing the bomber on take-off, "I'm not kissing you"

JAKH

@JAkH I may have seen The Client when it came out, but I definitely don’t remember anything about it either way. However, there is no excuse for me forgetting Under Siege, not least because it features a certain Baywatch crush of mine

James Hadden

@ James Hadden Another TLJ cheesy guilty pleasure: "Under Siege" some good serious roles: "No Country For Old Men" "The Client" from a book by John Grisham and an action comedy: "Space Cowboys"

JAKH

Serious Will Smith: "Concussion" (2015) true story, I think one of his best performances

JAKH

I definitely preferred the other character in Fresh Prince. He was never the main attraction for me, but I'm glad that I saw some episodes for the other characters!!

Trash guilty pleasure movies have me curious! My next Will Smith movie will definitely be a serious role, it seems there are quite a few of those

Verowak

I've seen a lot of people mention that series in my True Grit reaction. Lonesome Dove is 1 season so it's a possibility!

Verowak

I agree Will Smith is not that funny. He is a good dramatic actor, I-ROBOT etc. Even on the Fresh Prince of Bel Air the humor was the characters of Uncle Phil, Geoffery the Butler and Carleton carried the comedy parts. He did have some very memorable scenes, but they were all dramatic and hard hitting.

Daniel Looney

I haven’t seen many Tommy Lee Jones movies, but a couple that come to mind are The Fugitive (excellent) and Volcano (trash guilty pleasure). I liked Will Smith in Seven Pounds, I Am Legend, and I Robot

James Hadden

Well like...I'll vote for it if it's a part of a poll, but I'm not upset if it doesn't win either.

OrangeLion

My favorite Tommy Lee Jones performance was in Lonesome Dove (1989) TV mini series. It's a western, Don't know if you would be into it, But it was a well loved classic. MIB was something I could take or leave. Just wasn't that into it.

Scott Howard

Hmm, it makes sense. I'll keep an eye out for him then :D

Verowak

He was the general (or some level of ranking officer) at the beginning before he got selected for the experimental whatever that made him the superhero. Maybe later as well.

PlaidGriffin

So a... if I have the chance to watch it, sure, but not go out of my way to see them 😂

Verowak

I've definitely seen Captain America, but have recollection of seeing him. Further proof that I'm due for a rewatch of Marvel at some point soon lol I did notice that the Edgar suit gets worse and worse, just completely forgot to mention it. They really did such an insanely amazing job on the aliens!!

Verowak

Ahh yeah!! further proof that I know the name but can't say what he's done! I should really have known about the Simpsons

Verowak

Additional Thoughts after the watch: A couple of Tommy Lee Jones movies to watch: The Fugitive (1993 with Harrison Ford) and he has a relatively small part in the first Captain America (2011). There are many more that he's in that I haven't seen so can't comment on, but those two I'd recommend. You mentioned the quality of the "Edgar-Suit" make up/prosthetics, but didn't mention, so I don't know if you noticed, the Edgar Suit gets progressively more "decomposed-looking" as the movie goes on. Several days later it's grayer and bits are starting to fall off, like there's a little skin tag hanging off his lip in the morgue scene that I can never not see. As far as the MIB sequels go, IMO, the others are not as good, but OK. Probably worth checking out at some point. There are some call backs and recurring characters from the first movie.

PlaidGriffin

I will say that even with K retiring in this one, the 2nd and 3rd still have some really great moments to them. I'd suggest watching them, but not as a "OMG you gotta watch them right now!" suggestion either.

OrangeLion

just getting started on the watch-along, but real quick, Danny Elfman has done the music for several movies, but he is also known for doing the music for The Simpsons.

PlaidGriffin

Oh no... OH NO!!! I saw 1997 and thought it was recent ish lol

Verowak

Oh goodness gracious me, this came out 27 years ago?! Don't mind me while I have an existential crisis 😂
