This movie got a lot of notoriety when it came out with a movie star taking a turn directing and casting two sitcom stars in heavy dramatic roles as the mom and the therapist. Mary Tyler Moore starred in two of the greatest sitcoms of all time and ran a production company with her husband that created many of the critical hit shows of the 70s and early 80s. An episode of her 70s sitcom was voted by critics to be the best sitcom episode of the 20th Century. At the time the movie was made she was at a low point. Her marriage was ending and with that her production company and she was having heavy substance abuse and health problems. Three weeks after the movie premiere her 24 year old son was killed when his gun misfired.

2025-04-06 20:54:26 +0000 UTCI've watched this film countless times and it never gets old to me. The emotional tension, denial within the family, relatability, and Conrad's arc are compelling. One of my good friends cites Ordinary People and the Dr. Berger character as the reason he became a therapist. The score is Pachelbel's Canon (Canon in D), which is commonly used in commercials and at weddings. I've always enjoyed the different arrangements of it in this film. Loved the reaction guys. Thanks for suggesting Jonathan! And I laughed at "more like gone!"
