Mulholland Drive (2001) Full Length Reaction!

Yeah David Lynch is an acquired taste that I never acquired. I have tried to get through this multiple times and gave up, but with your commentary I managed to get to the end. A few facts that make this even weirder. The actress who played Camilla/Rita was shot in the head in a car as a kid by a stray bullet and then got into a car crash on the way to her audition for this. The beginning of this was a tv pilot that didn’t get picked up and David Lynch brought the cast back to turn it into a movie. He has never explained any of this to leave it open to your interpretations.

So there's a lot of different interpretations out there, like the afterlife and parallel universes, but the one that makes the most sense to me is that the last 25 minutes is reality and all the rest is a fantasy/dream of Diane's. Diane is miserable and a failed actress and her girlfriend Camilla is a huge success and no longer interested in her. So in fantasy land, Betty gets an audition and absolutely kills it during her first week in Hollywood. And Rita is helpless with no memory and completely dependent on Betty. Adam the director is in reality a very successful and famous director who beds Camilla. So the fantasy world Adam is a joke whose wife leaves him and he gets beat up and covered in paint and is forced to hire Camilla by evil, opaque and shadowy forces ,even though he would totally love to hire Betty just at one glance. The hitman kills Camilla in real life. The hitman says, when I give you this blue key, you'll know the job is done. (You guys kind of talked over that). So she sees it on the table there, and then the guilt is overwhelming and she kills herself. So the hitman is an incompetent idiot in the fantasy world, so there's no real danger to Camilla, so Diane need not feel guilty for ordering the hit, because surely he failed, right? And then there's people like the "Swamp goblin" as Zay hilariously called the homeless person behind the restaurant, and the cowboy and the whole byzantine crime syndicate and I don't really know that any of that means so much, other than Lynch likes creepy ambiance and this movie has it in spades. And the guy in the restaurant I think represents Diane not wanting to face reality and being forced to. Anyway, I apologize for the headaches. :) If I get another Big Bite, I'll be nicer and more mainstream, I swear. But it was a really funny reaction.

Haha welcome to the world of David Lynch, my advice to you is don’t try to figure it out, you will only give yourself a headache. Stanley Kubrick may leave you with questions, this guy just makes things up as he goes along.
