I've heard it described that III was a bad idea competently executed, while IV was a good idea poorly executed. At any rate, it's a shame how both turned out, but if nothing else, Christopher Reeve still gave it his all. :)

The supporting cast in this movie was insane: Gene Hackman, Ned Beatty, Marlon Brando, and Glenn Ford, just to mention a few. Today's movies don't let the supporting cast shine; it's all about the main character. Also, the intentionally "unintentional" humor was crazy.

One of my favorite movies of all time. Came out the year I was born and first watched it as a 5 year old. Been a lifelong Superman fan ever since! Firstly, thanks for reaction to the movie (it's always a pleasure seeing your guys' reaction). Second, I'm sure you guys know that this film is a product of it's time. This movie was rated PG, however if the PG-13 rating system had been around in 1978, this film would have qualified. Some of the scenes are quite intense for young children including the guy being killed in the subway, and Lois Lane being crushed in a car. I remember having nightmares about both of those scenarios when I was little after watching this film. They probably wouldn't film toddler Kal-El completely nude if it was filmed today, but back then child nudity was considered innocent. Also, some of the gags obviously didn't age very well. The little girl getting spanked for "lying" about seeing a flying man is probably taboo today. The Army major ordering his men to give Miss Teschmacher a "vigorous chest massage" and "mouth to mouth" while trying to rescue her was played for laughs but obviously highly offensive by today's standards. And Miss Teschmacher kissing an unconscious Superman because she didn't think he'd let her later seemed reasonable for the time, but completely nonconsensual and inappropriate now. This was not only the first "Superman" movie, but it was also the first comic book superhero film that was ever released with a serious tone. This film set the standard and became the model of what a superhero movie should be. It was originally intended (and filmed) as a two-parter, but the ending was changed so that they could release the first film independently and profit off of it before releasing the second. I suggest watching Superman 2, as it is a worthy follow up to the original. After that, the quality of the films stars going down (there were two additional sequels as well). But Superman 2 continues some of the story elements established in the first film.

I was 4 or 5 years old when I first watched this in 1979/1980 on our VCR and it has stayed with me forever. It was a marvel to watch and I truly believed someone could fly! but I also believed in Santa Clause too lol. Yes there were many things I didn't understand such as why Krypton exploded, or the missiles, or the San Andreas Fault but I understood good & evil. With regards to the effects, I think because we watch HDTV every day, it makes our eyes automatically zoom-in on sub-par filming techniques in old movies but for me, it just adds to their charm :) I can't think of anyone else better to play Lex Luther than Gene Hackman. Christopher Reeve will always be the OG Superman and Superman 2 is better than 1; 3 is OK and 4 is dreadful. I believe 1 & 2 were filmed back-to-back.

I've never had this much fun watching this movie than I did with you two. I laughed so hard. All us little girls back then wanted to be Lois Lane! I saw this in the theater back then and for the time, the effects were pretty cool. That Helicopter scene had most of us reacting the same way you guys did! "Oh that's not your underware." Cam!! I died. And I loved how you kept up with the puns and Zay didn't get one and you looked right into the camera! So funny! A great reaction 🥰

A movie I loved very much as a kid in the 80's definitely shows its age now on some truly creaky, cringey moments. But I guess it largely still works. You guys were hilarious again in your reaction. The tagline when this movie came out was "you will believe a man can fly" and I think the flying scenes still look pretty good. The husband and I recently tried to marathon these after having not seen them for decades, and Superman II still holds up. But we didn't get more than 15 minutes into III and IV is a truly special kind of terrible. I wouldn't go past II if I were you guys.
