What's the big story? Ukrainian forces made tactical gains in Zaporizhzhia and Donetsk, while the other regions were mostly quiet.
What's the second story? The United States (finally) authorized the transfer of F-16 fighter planes to Ukraine.

- The Hong Kong-flagged container ship Joseph Schulte arrived in Istanbul without incident after departing from Odesa on August 16
- A Russian missile struck a legitimate military target in the Ukrainian town of Mezhova

- The United States authorized the transfer of F-16 fighter planes currently in service with Denmark and the Netherlands to Ukraine
