The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring - PART 2 (FULL REACTION)

The second half of the Fellowship of the Ring is an absolute rollercoaster! I love the amount of heartfelt moments scattered throughout all the action as well as the creepiness of Moria. Enjoy :)

When I first watched the movies as a teenager, Aragorn was my favourite character by far, I mean he is just incredible. But the older I have gotten, the more Sam takes that place. So much of his character is who I strive to be.

The scene with Gimli at Balin's tomb always gets me. A lot of people forget or don't realize that Balin is his uncle basically. Balin is Gimli's father's, Gloin's, direct first cousin. Gimli's grandfather is Groin, Balin's father's, Fundin's, brother. If that didn't confuse anyone. That is his direct family he is mourning. And I just realized on this watch through that Boromir goes up and stands next to Gimli and places his hand on Gimli's shoulder as Gandalf reads Ori's last entry. Ori is another close family friend having been one of Thorin's company in the Hobbit along with Balin and Gimli's father, Gloin. Those dwarves also did visit Bilbo in the Shire periodically, including Balin before and during his time as the Lord of Moria. Frodo likely met him at least once. Also just noticed this watch through Boromir was the one to catch Frodo from that tentacle monster when it dropped him and carried him into the mines. Honestly listening to you enthuse about Boromir has gotten me paying more attention to him while I rewatch this video several times. Something about having someone talking about and not quite analysing the film while it plays, helps me focus on it when my brain wants to go in ten million different directions.

The thing with Legolas' reaction when Gimli is telling about Galadriel's gift goes back to The Silmarillian. Galadriel was born way long ago. And has always been this epitome of beauty and there was an elf who was super powerful/I fluently who asked her for a lock of hair three times and was three times denied because Galadriel could see the darkness in him and his heart. She gave to Gumli what she refused one of her own kind. Saying, essentially, that Gimli is better and more worthy than this super powerful influential elf who ended up betraying them all. Super cliffnotes version. I'm sure others have put it better elsewhere.

I love Rings of Power, definitely watch this!!

I second this

So I have the extended cut on DVD and the first half ends when they're leaving Rivendell, so your last video not ending there did kinda throw me off a little bit lol

Was it his mother that Aragorn (Strider) was singing about in the first half of this episode, in the woods when Frodo asked "who is the woman of whom you sing?"

Caryl C

You all really need to watch 'A Discovery of Witches. ' It's a great three-season show based on Deborah Harkness's best-selling All Souls Trilogy.

Gandalf fighting the balrog helps all of Middle Earth. Leaving just one alive endangers everyone in Arda. Balrogs are corrupted Maia, beings of which Gandalf, Saruman, and Sauron are also. However, this balrog, the last one, is more powerful and dangerous than Sauron because it’s intact while Sauron is fractured. I don’t think Saruman would attack it unless he had no choice because everyone who’s slain a balrog died shortly afterwards. The balrog would be a rival to Sauron, as they are both maia. Balrogs were used for war and destruction because theirs and Sauron’s master, Morgoth, wanted to destroy all of Arda, the planet Middle Earth resides. Sauron and Saruman seek only to conquer so they are not as dangerous.

"My captain, my king... " "Don't you lose him Samwise Gamgee" still crying over these quotes even after my 20th (something like that) rewatch.

Boromir was definitely a victim of the Ring. It preyed on his mind and his fears.

I know it's gotten a lot of flak, but I'd highly recommend checking out the Rings of Power (on or off the channel). If nothing else, you'll get to see places like Moria in their heyday. That particular scene of Moria in the show will knock your socks off.

Henri

It's not accident that Saruman sounds like he's singing. In Tolkien's world I think music and song is considered kind of the highest and most powerful vessel for magic. If I remember right, the whole universe and the material world was created by God (Eru) and his angels singing it into existence.

Henri

You’re right, goblin not troll. The physics of being stabbed by a troll would necessitate a ruptured spleen 😂

Timothy Panngam

Yeah by a larger goblin/orc. Not a troll 😆 which is why it’s a bit out of place in the film.

Oscar

The temptation of the Ring for people like Galadriel and Gandalf is much stronger than for others. They possess great power of their own so the Ring would amplify that, making them as powerful as Sauron himself. The temptation is to seize that power and overthrown Sauron. The reality is that the Ring would conquer them in the end and they would become Sauron.

Timothy Panngam

In the book, the scene where Gandalf fights the Balrog, things happen a bit faster than in the film. Gandalf doesn't have much time from the moment he collapses the bridge to the Balrog snaring him with it's whip.

Timothy Panngam

In the book, when Frodo is stabbed by the troll, he does suffer a significant rib injury.

Timothy Panngam

LOTR is a comfort film for me now. When I was a boy, the books were my escape. Now, I dip into the films when I want that temporary respite from the world.

Timothy Panngam

Sort of like "flee" but much more elegant.

Caryl C

All i could think about was the orcs shouting “LADS LADS LADS LADS” and they get ready

Moss

Fun fact, Galadriel was one of the oldest beings in Middle Earth. Almost 5x as old as Gandalf, who was ~2000 (in his form as a wizard).

Geothro

Quick little tidbit since it’s ALWAYS misunderstood; when Gandalf says “Fly you fools.”, he’s saying “run you fools!” If you’ve read the LotR, you know the phrase “fly” is a synonym to “run”.

I really like the creative way you are viewing these movies so that your experience (and therefore, ours) is fresh rather than a rehashing of what you've already seen. Bravo! It's been so long since I read the books that I now must take the movies at face value. So I appreciate the other commenters who are filling in some of the backstory. I like the powerful, mysterious character of Galadriel, played to perfection by the luminous Cate Blanchett. She well illustrates the idea that "good" is not at all the same thing as "nice." And I love the farewell exchange between Galadriel and a sweetly besotted Gimli, whose gallant compliments rival any noble courtier in King Arthur's court. She sees his heart and rewards his admiration with the most beautifully girlish, flirty smile. I love it. So many memorable moments, too many to mention. But I'm really enjoying your reactions and looking forward to "The Two Towers."

I think that Gandalf let go of the bridge in Khazad-dum (Moria) for both reasons, he knew he couldn't get up in time to prevent the others being harmed if they didn't run then, and he was planning to take out the Balrog as well. I loved all the characters of this film, I have read all the books, including the Silmarillion. However, Gandalf, and Galadriel are my favorites. Lothlorien was referred to as the Heart of Elvendom in Middle-Earth because of Galadriel...she was one of the oldest, most graceful, and most powerful of Elves in Middle-Earth at the time. If you saw all the "Hobbit" films, it shows it was her that forced Sauron to leave Mirkwood's Dol-guldur (spelled wrong I am sure...sorry), and go back to Mordor. She had Nenya. the ring of Adamant (one of the elven rings of power), and it was her that kept Lothlorien as it was for millennia, when she leaves Middle-Earth most of the elves leave forever. Elrond's Rivendell was just a very large home, not as large as Lothlorien was. He was however, nearly as powerful as Galadriel, but not quite. She was also his mother in law, Celebrian her daughter was Elrond's wife. Tolkien was a professor, a linguist, and a writer. The man was a phenomenal person. The documentary on him is fantastic. And many people have stated that many religious overtones exist in The Lord of the RIngs. Tolkien was, after all, a devout Catholic. To say the least about Boromir, nobody dies better on film than Sean Bean. I am sorry this is so long, but JRR Tolkien, and the Lord of the Rings is my favorite novels, and series of films, both it and the Hobbit, when I was a child, and young adult it was these books that made me fall in love with both reading and film, I use to play Dungeons, and Dragons as well all due to Tolkien making me fall in love with fantasy, Star Trek originally, and Star Wars after made me fall in love with Sci-Fi. Great job commenting, and summarizing as always Oscar.....Brian

Yup, just realised it as well 🙂

Kate

So I got to the part of fight against orcs in the Mines of Moria and it seems like it’s movie’s issue, as sound effects are now louder than anything 🙉

Kate

It's hard for me to edit since it's rather the film that changes volume. Throughout the dialogue the film goes more quiet, but when its an action scene it gets super loud. I tried to have my voice meet in the middle but unfortunately I can't do much.

Oscar

2nd part is my absolute favourite 😍 A quick comment about the sound, maybe it's just me, but the sound in the movie is quieter than Oscar's comments. So I have to turn up the volume to hear the movie, and then Oscar's comments are super loud 😂 Anyone else have this problem?

Kate

So wonderful xoxo
