Darkest Hour

As a follow up, if you are interested in this period of history, I'd recommend the 1969 'Battle of Britain' movie. A pretty accurate account of the air battle over Southern England following the fall of France in 1940. Stars Michael Caine, Roberts Shaw and a host of other great actors. Fun fact: No CGI back then, and in terms of aircraft numbers they assembled, they had the 35th largest air force in the world while filming!

2024-08-18 15:25:42 +0000 UTCChurchill hadn't dropped the ball! He spent years in the political wilderness, unloved and unwanted, even ridiculed for warning the nation about Germany rearmament and it's gangster leadership! Hitler was prepared to offer Britain a peace deal and negotiations did happen in Switzerland. Britain to withdraw from the war and leave Germany a free hand in Europe. In return German forces would not interfere with British commerce nor the empire. Hitler considered the war won after Dunkirk, while Churchill used that brief lull between Dunkirk and the start of the Battle of Britain to bolster the countries defences as negotiations continued.

Shame perhaps, that he didn’t back Churchill and the British people’s steadfast resolve? I would hope so, for had Churchill listened to him and signed that peace treaty, the UK and most of Europe would have been instantly subjugated under Nazi rule. Churchill was right: you couldn’t trust Hitler. Chamberlain, more than anyone should have known that, especially after returning from that meeting with Hitler in 1938, who swore to Chamberlain that he had 'No more territorial demands to make in Europe,’ then a year later proceeded to March into Czechoslovakia, Netherlands, Belgium and France! Yeah, right! It’s a pity that Chamberlain didn’t survive until at least after the war, happy in the knowledge that he had finally made the right decision to raise that hankerchief in the Commons and support Churchill.

2024-08-15 07:04:36 +0000 UTCI think it was said, when the film came out, that poetic licence was taken with the scene of Churchill speaking to the British public on the Underground train, in that this never happened in real life. The scene, however, does get across to the audience as to how many Britons felt at that time: that they should fight on and never surrender to the Germans, as the rest of Europe had already done so. This is a wonderful film, and every actor playing a memorable character in it is to be applauded, none more so than Gary Oldman who deservedly won the Oscar that year for Best Actor.
