Doctor Who Runaway Bride
Added 2024-01-05 03:36:57 +0000 UTCI had actually recorded a reaction to this and was trying to edit it through 3000 computer crashes so this is more review (it'd been over a month for the re-record) than full reaction but a good start for a new season imo.

This was a better Christmas episode than Tennant’s first (his regeneration story), because it featured more of the Doctor (naturally), and it had a better premise. Looking forward to you starting season 3. IMO it’s a much stronger season than season 2, with some absolutely superb stories which I think will blow your mind!

2024-01-09 17:26:15 +0000 UTCThis episode has a somewhat mixed reception amongst the fandom, some deem it pretty corny and cheesy, I can see where they come from but I find it pretty fun too. The Racnoss whilst kinda scary for any arachnophobe is a phenomenally cool practical effect and the actress does a phenomenal job at making the role her own. Everything else is kinda bog standard stuff for a fun DW story. The bit that sticks with me is the finale. The Doctor goes on for ages about how high on emotion and stressed out Donna is, but I reckon he’s still annoyed with himself here for losing Rose, and found it rewarding to drown the Racnoss at the centre of the Earth. But the shot of him surrounded by cascading water and fire is UTTERLY ICONIC Tenth Doctor imagery. That merciless Time Lord giving someone a chance to not be a dick and destroy humanity, and them saying no, and him then pretty much committing genocide on an entire species, that is just a glimpse of the Doctor in mindset Time War, the Doctor we’ve been told ended this Time War by killing all of his people and the Daleks together, for the sake of creation, the universe at stake, with no other choice. And the moment is punctuated by Donna looking up at him there, seeing him standing still, not moving, and using her humanity to stop him from staying too long and potentially getting himself killed or drowned with those Racnoss, snapping him out of his moment of wrath back to reality that he needs to save himself and not get carried away by his actions. Then she says once they’re back at her house “Find someone, because I think you need someone to stop you”. And she’s right. Because without the company and the moral compass of a human companion in moments like that, that moment of wrath is what the Doctor will be without a companion. He could become vengeful, omnipotent, and risk his life. It’s fantastic sci-fi writing, and begins something of an arc for the Doctor, because so far with Nine and Ten you’ve seen them being very “No, I’m fine, I’m the last of my kind, I know me, don’t need anyone, I’m better on my own”, which this episode proves isn’t true, he risks his life fighting these foes, and that having friends and allies with him can save him from going too far. Looking forward to Series 3!

Will he be lucky enough to see Donna again (as Dr Song would say spoilers). Please don't make us wait months for S3/E1 Smith and Jones.

2024-01-05 16:25:45 +0000 UTCPleased you enjoyed it. As is usual for a Who Xmas episode, the main story is pretty light and silly, but Russell T Davies' writing ensures there will always be several sharp emotional/character moments and hints of what is to come. Enjoy Series 3.
