A lot of Asian countries are more conscious of waste. For example I live in Japan now and many homes don't have dryers or if they do they don't dry like American dryers they just spin out excess water. Almost all my neighbors hang their clothes out to dry. It's all about conservation and not wasting electricity or gas. It's also about space, many homes don't have space for things like that.
