The Incubus System Chapter 900. Corrupted

The Incubus System Chapter 900. Corrupted

“So--- you consider we aren't at the bottom of society anymore?” Celia's sudden remark caught me off guard, her voice betraying a hint of uncertainty despite her attempt to sound casual. I turned to look at her, noticing the faint tremor in her voice and the telltale glimmer of tears in her eyes as she tried to maintain her composure.

Her gaze remained fixed on the television screen, but I could sense the turmoil brewing beneath the surface. Without hesitation, I reached out and gently placed my hand on her head, offering a reassuring gesture in an attempt to comfort her.

"We already have the choice, Celia. More than anyone in this world," I reassured her, my voice softening as I spoke. It wasn't just about material wealth or social status, but rather the freedom and power we possessed to shape our own destinies. I wanted her to know that we were no longer confined to the confines of our past. We had the power to carve out our own paths, to defy expectations and forge a future that was uniquely ours.

"I guess you're right," Celia's faint smile brought a sense of relief, signaling that she was willing to shift gears and steer the conversation away from the somber mood that had momentarily enveloped us.

I took a deep breath, grateful for her resilience, and decided to refocus on the original topic at hand. “So yeah, Mia and I have to prepare this well," I began, my tone becoming more animated as I delved back into the discussion. "It's not as easy as blowing away a palace and freeing Puriel. There's a lot more to consider—the impact, the consequences, the responsibility that comes with such a monumental decision."

With each word, I shoveled more food into my mouth, trying to distract myself from the weight of my own thoughts. Explaining the complexities of the situation only seemed to exacerbate the throbbing ache in my head, a tangible reminder of the immense burden I carried.

Red's reaction mirrored my own internal turmoil, his head shaking from side to side in disbelief. “The human world is more complicated and troublesome than I thought,” he remarked, echoing the sentiments that undoubtedly lingered in the minds of all those present.

Foxy, on the other hand, offered a different perspective, one colored by gratitude rather than frustration. “Somehow I feel grateful to be born as a demon," she mused, her words carrying a sense of contemplation.

I couldn't resist teasing Foxy a bit, flashing her a mischievous smirk. “You would think differently if I didn't save you from those Hounds,” I said playfully, recalling the incident with the Hounds that had put her in a tight spot.

Her response was a subtle tightening of her lips.

“The demon world and human world have their own problems," I mused aloud, my tone tinged with a hint of wistfulness. "I just hope for the best for both of them."

With those words, I attempted to draw our discussion to a close, eager to redirect my focus away from the weighty responsibilities that weighed heavily on my mind. Returning my attention to my dinner, I allowed myself to be momentarily distracted by the flickering images on the TV screen, hoping that the mindless entertainment would provide a temporary reprieve from my thoughts.

After polishing off the last morsel of my dinner, it was time to dive back into the nightly routine of demon hunting. With a sense of purpose, I rallied the soldiers – or rather, my furry and feathery companions – to join me in our night hunt.

Before we went, Alan, with a flap of his wings, swooped into my room, delivering the latest list of targets before leaving behind a trail of chaos in his wake. It was like a whirlwind had passed through, but I couldn't help but appreciate the additional list, even if it did come with a side of disorder.

This time around, Foxy was with us. Meanwhile, Buni took on the task of accompanying Celia, ensuring that she had a trusty bodyguard by her side. As for Red, I entrusted her with the important duty of training Miranda again.

With our assignments sorted, we set out into the night. I activated my Mind Corruption skill, delving deep into the recesses of their minds to uncover their darkest secrets. It was a tedious and draining task, one that required patience and precision. But despite my unease, I knew it was necessary to ensure the safety of both worlds.

Navigating the murky waters of politics was never my favorite pastime, but it was a necessary evil in my line of work. As I delved into the minds of the politicians on my list, I couldn't help but feel a sense of disgust wash over me. The things I unearthed in their memories were enough to make anyone's stomach churn.

I was bombarded with images of political scheming, backstabbing, and corruption. It was a grim reminder of the inherent flaws in human nature, a stark contrast to the ideals of justice and righteousness that I had once held dear.

But amidst the sea of deceit and treachery, there were glimmers of hope – moments of genuine kindness and compassion that reminded me that not all humans were irredeemable. It was these small things that kept me going, fueling my determination to protect those who couldn't protect themselves.

Yet, despite my best efforts, I couldn't shake the nagging question that lingered in the back of my mind. Why did I bother to defend these politicians when their actions often left much to be desired? It was a question that weighed heavily on my conscience, one that I struggled to answer even as I continued to carry out my responsibilities.

But in the end, I knew what I did beyond mere politics. It was about safeguarding this world, regardless of the flaws of those in power.
