Victim or Villain?

Aileen Wuornos' life was marked by hardship. She experienced childhood abuse, was homeless as a teenager, and later relied on sex work to survive. Between 1989 and 1990, she killed seven men, claiming self-defense against violent clients. The court saw it differently, sentencing her to death.

During an interview, she was asked:
“How can a prostitute be raped?”

This question reflects a deep-rooted stigma—one that dismisses the reality that anyone can be a victim of sexual violence. Aileen claimed she killed in self-defense, yet society and the courts viewed her as a monster rather than a survivor. Can years of trauma shape actions in ways we struggle to define?

💬 What do YOU think?

🩸 Where does self-defense end and murder begin?

💬 How do you think society has improved in recognizing and addressing issues like abuse, trauma, and the rights of sex workers?

💀 If you could ask Aileen one question, what would it be?

Let’s discuss… 👀.

Victim or Villain?

Comments

To dive into your questions: I believe there is a fine line between murder and self defense, but that line can blur. Did you intend, plan, think about taking this person's life? Did you act in fear that your life would be taken away? Did you act to defend yourself, but continued to harm the attacker despite them backing down? For Aileen, I believe her first murder was done in self defense; the other six men were murdered in cold blood. I think she realized it was "easier" to kill and rob them, instead of selling herself. I honestly do not think the attitude twords sex workers has or will ever change. A lot of people sadly look down on adult film stars, escorts, prostitutes, hired companions because they themselves have some type of trauma or have been taught that sex is dirty and only meant for procreation, or that the person is a sex addict or degenerate. For some it's a career, an art form, or a means to survive. If America could stop stigmatizing sex we could finally have a real discussion on sex work and recognizing it as a legitimate form of earning an income. If I could ask Aileen anything, I would ask her what she would have done if society gave her the chance to heal and thrive

If I could have asked her one question it would be: What's your favorite song of all time?

She was a victim in the beginning, but then realized killing didn't require the follow through. I don't actually think she was INTO the killing. I think it was a means to an end for her...she needed the money and that was the end of it. She was no nonsense with the media, too. She knew what she did, hated dumb questions, and ultimately owned up to what she did unapologetically. Was she technically a serial killer? Yes. But, she didn't kill for the thrill. And I'm surprised that the BAU and criminologists haven't created a new term for this type of multiple killings where it isn't for enjoyment. Gang bangers kill multiple people at separate times and aren't serial killers. They're murderers. Yet, Aileen is labeled a serial killer and the term doesn't apply. Regardless, she was definitely evil.

Aileen has always fascinated me, and in some ways I feel like I understand her. I do not condone violence and murder, but sadly I feel that's all Aileen knew. I was homeless from 18-26, I had to do unsavory things like Aileen to survive. I was drugged and raped four different times, I had to solicit my body, I was a stripper .... I did everything I could to feel loved, wanted, accepted. No one believed me when I said I was raped, because I'm a man. So I feel a weird connection with Aileen, I know the trauma and fear. I know the deep desire to make it all stop. The loneliness, the want for a better life. Aileen was a woman who wanted her power back, she wanted to be in control of her destiny. Sadly she took the darkness in her heart and killed. I believe the first murder was self defense, but the trauma from it brought out the monster. I feel if she was able to get help for her mental illness, and tools to help her heal from the trauma she wouldn't have become a murderer. She was right in saying, "....if you can't be a good example, be a horrible warning."

I gotta agree with Diana a few comments below. She said it perfectly.

Mars

Interesting to read. I didn't know about her, but I recognise the name from the show Cross. They didn't tell a lot about her story there, just that she killed multiple men.

Andy

Personally, I feel deeply sorry for her. Of course murder cannot be the solution but it shows so many deeply rooted issues in society and the patriarchy. Men can do with women whatever they want and if a woman then snaps, she's the one to blame. It's a complex topic..she would have needed help. But the entire system is the problem that lead to this happening..so it's not just a single person freaking out but MUCH more.

Her case has always fascinated me and I feel she was victimized. She unfortunately had no stable person in her life to guide and love her. It makes me sad how she really just wanted the chair in the end. To stop the pain and the people around her that never heard her. Yes anyone can be raped no matter their profession and no one believed that. I feel for her.
