True Detective Episodes 1-3

"To realise that all your life, all your love, all your hate, all your memory, all your pain, it was all the same thing. It was all the same dream. A dream that you had inside a locked room. A dream about you being a person. And like a lot of dreams, there's a monster at the end of it."

Excellent work! Thank you! Please do No country for old men!

Patrick

Just leaving a quick comment to let you know this video was such an absolute joy to watch. Listening to people dive deep on the media I love is honestly one of life's great joys lol

Jared Sarnie

Not a lot of time for an in-depth comment, but this was really good (as expected). Can’t wait to watch the others.

Scott Sinner

As expected, you shined a light on so many lovely small details of my favorite TV show. Excited to watch your thoughts on the rest of the season! And because no one mentioned it: the latest season was painful. They copied the structure, but missed the magic. 😖

SuperWhimsy

Just wow as usual! As someone who lived in Louisiana for many years as a transplant, your commentary on the importance of this specific location to the story and characters is so spot on. The deeply entrenched poverty, pagan spirituality mixed with conservative Christianity, a disenfranchised white population and a history of systemic racism against Black folks… I truly believe the series wouldn’t have the same magic if it took place elsewhere. It’s very interesting to hear your take on the Deep South as someone from another country! Absolutely well done, my husband and I binged the whole series over the weekend in preparation for the rest of your analysis :) Your hard work is so appreciated!

Hannah Wycoff

seriously always my biggest gripe with JJ Abrams and Steven Moffat's work, always an interesting premise with no thoughts on how to follow through on it

Clay Moth

Such a wonderful commentary to such a great show! I'm so excited you're doing this!! Something I also picked up on when Rust is dancing with that girl is his hands are not actually touching her. His fingertips are pointing away from her midsection and he is not holding her hand. This could be politeness, but I think it's more reflective of your interpretation where he is just not stimulated by this woman.

Erin Russell

haha yeah, its defintitely a thing between being prepared and just talking "off the cuff", i record my own voice every now and then (in a business setting so mostly no pints involved :( ) and i can really tell the difference between something I prepared (even a "one liner") and just a random talk. Cant really say one is better then the other, they both have their own purpose but in this instance I'd say your love for the show shone through haha! about the mask thing, yeah, it is very obvious when you know where they are taking the inspiration from. The only thing I cant really wrap my head around is that having these lines implies Rust to be the king in yellow - which would be reasonable if they are trying to cast some doubts into the viewers mind about who did it and whatnot, but here it is done in a way that only the most attentive viewer catches it and now we know he is innocent so it doesnt really make sense in that regard. I'm thinking like yeah, they are definitely taking inspiration from that "mask on, mask off"-device, but they are also just playing around with it and his "bad guy who keeps other bad guys at the door"-thing. It is not a critisicm of the show, for me it still adds a ton of value having the additional insight from where they got the different viewpoints from, but it do muddle the waters about what they are trying to portray a bit haha (all this to say, there might be layers and layers I as a casual but interested audience might miss.......)

Patrik Jutterström

I really like your point about the title Hazard. It is very 'pulpy' and noir in a way. I think that suits the writers tastes quite well too, maybe it just didn't quite land with how HBO decided to market the show. Which was phenomenal but certainly creates a different vibe. I haven't read The Jaunt but I have read a lot of Stephen King so I will happily check it out. That's a great call with The Dark Tower too I'd completely forgotten about that! I feel like I've seen Yellow=Madness in another one of his books? Maybe Rose Madder? I might be misremembering. Lol, yeah, about the nerve pinch: I know I'm a broken record but it would seem to me that if it were this effective the MMA world would be full of nerve pinching maneuvers rather than people punching each other in the face repeatedly. A battle strategy which has seemingly aged very well. That being said it's perfectly valid in your comic because they're luchador and that's a recognisable moveset that relies on pageantry. Entirely valid. But I get the feeling that Marty in real life would have done something very bad to Rust had he tried that shit!

Novum

For sure, I think I probably should watch the new season just to see how it relates to this one!

Novum

It's funny you mention that Patrik, I was talking to Jeffiot recently and he said something similar about me sounding way more relaxed/Bri'ish. I think it's the difference between me reading from a script and me speaking naturally and being aware that my regional accent is not the way forward. I can slip into full 'Jon Snow' if I'm tired/drunk. So the shift is probably unintentional, but I do want these videos to feel more relaxed and friendly. If the Youtube videos are a university lecture then this is having a few pints with your lecturers at the uni bar. And yeah, that's spot on work with the quote it was the first thing that stood out to me. There's no doubt in my mind that's correct. And during the finale we'll see the names Camilla and Cassilda written on the walls of Errol's home too! Man I love this show so much.

Novum

He's so bleak and I love him.

Novum

I have added that to my to watch list Jogrnaut, thanks so much dude!

Novum

Yeah I've caught up with the finale now and I think I'm a lot clearer on The Yellow King/Carcosa as they're put forward in the show. I tend to consider it a mini-series too but there are elements of Season 2 I really enjoyed.

Novum

We're going to, thanks for listening to the end!

Novum

WW S1 is so damn good! It just suffers from JJ Abrahms 'mystery box' syndrome and doesn't cash in on all that wonderful suspense as it moves on. Think I stopped watching at the end of S2.

Novum

Hope you're feeling better Nicole!

Novum

I'd love to visit Texas at some point, not because of satanic murders just because the landscape is insane, and the size/scope of everything is insane. Love Twin Peaks!

Novum

Couldn't agree more Caroline!

Novum

He's so good! Awesome that you're into After Effects dude, I can use very basic elements of it but struggle with anything complex. Currently trying to get my head round Animate.

Novum

ah come on now you can't imply that Rust's nerve pinch isn't a legit move! I used it in my comic! https://snipehuntmedia.com/comics/snipe-hunt/snipehunt121/ But you did qualify it with "Rust is Batman" so yes, we are in agreement

Professor Hazard

If Rust represents death, it's fitting that he's the Taxman, because nothing is certain but death and taxes.

Professor Hazard

(Stephen King also had a Yellow King as the primary antagonist of The Dark Tower)

Professor Hazard

The yellow madness that I first recall is the story "The Jaunt" by Stephen King, which I won't spoil for you if you're unfamiliar with it, but once you read it you'll never forget it!

Professor Hazard

Rust's innate understanding of Tuttle as an evil man may also speak to the intuition of a true detective. Also, how is it never mentioned what a ripoff of the Dora Lang murder the beginning of NBC's "Hannibal" is? Their depiction of Will Graham is just Rust but adding "this is my design" to the end of everything he intuits. Anyways can't wait to hear what you have to say about Night Country

Professor Hazard

Think about the title "True Detective" in terms of the way that Marty is a classical chauvinist. Like "No Country For Old Men" it is sort of ironically hearkening to a time that didn't really exist by implying that the protagonists are true detectives. But this also comes with the unstated fact that these guys are corrupt, they twist the law to work for them in the name of justice, which in a way does make them true detectives.

Professor Hazard

Agreed I've never gotten more value for my dollar ever haha.

Daniel Smith-Hamilton

Phenomenal this is the best single season of TV ever made. I'm so glad I've found your work you are so eloquent and you notice so much stuff that just goes straight over my head. I really really enjoy this stuff well done.

Daniel Smith-Hamilton

Thanks for another amazing breakdown. I'm enjoying my rewatch of the show and your insights help me see things I hadn't noticed before. Looking forward to the next one!

Alison

This was very good. I do think looking back on Season 1 after several years (and subsequent seasons) creates an interesting perspective, because you can definitely see they caught lightning in a bottle.

Stitches

haha another one of my favorite youtubers (alt shift x) has an alternative channel - alt schwift x - for more relaxed/quick and dirty stuff and everytime he uploads on that one its his voice, but with a big smile on his face. I KINDA feel the same here, which is really fun even though you are talking about some dark stuff haha. I guess the more produced stuff - which i really, really, love - has a more professional sounding voice on it, but here it feels like you are just letting loose which is fun! Regarding the mask on cole - I didnt notice it during my viewing but when you are pointing it out it feels very close to one of the few lines from the Yellow King-play that is actually mentioned, and where we get to meet the yellow king for I think the first time: Camilla: You, sir, should unmask. Stranger: Indeed? Cassilda: Indeed it's time. We have all laid aside disguise but you. Stranger: I wear no mask. Camilla: (Terrified, aside to Cassilda) No mask? No mask!

Some Yellow King shit...

The Franklin Conspiracy is the wildest rabbit hole I’ve ever gone down in my 20 or so years of being into true crime. Seriously impacted my worldview. Also, this was the easiest Patreon fee I’ve ever parted with. Your work is truly incredible.

Brandon Hunt

Loved this, you already picked up on so many little things I missed. Can't wait to rewatch with your insights in mind!

Mary Delaney

"Maybe the honorable thing for our species to do is deny our programming, stop reproducing, walk hand in hand into extinction, one last midnight - brothers and sisters opting out of a raw deal." - Rust Cohle.

Fourth Horseman

In case anyone is enchanted with the southern atmosphere...a great documentary about the south that has incredible atmosphere and imagery is Searching For The Wrong Eyed Jesus. Check it out if you get a chance.

jogrnaut

This was great! Looking forward to hearing the more fully refined thoughts on Rust as Death/masks as a theme. Such an amazing show, despite its treatment of women. I think I'll just keep pretending that it was a miniseries that ended after this 🙃

Stasha BoBasha

Most definitely please finish the rest of the season!!

p johnson

loved hearing you mention that Westworld also had a perfect first season because I was thinking that just as you were talking about the perfection of this season!!

Clay Moth

I was actually excited to be feeling unwell today because it meant I got to watch this. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Nicole M

I’ve rewatched TD S1 twice yearly since it premiered in 2014. The only TV series I’ve re-watched as often is Twin Peaks: The Return. Looking forward to your take on the first three episodes! I lived in East Texas when I was a kid and they capture that area perfectly.

Gen Hensley

So happy for an excuse to rewatch this season…again

Annie

I came back to re-watch the longlegs video but got brand new content!! Yay! I feel like people said this way too much before I saw True Detective season 1, but it really is near perfect television. I was so blown away the first time I watched it and binged the whole season in 2 days

Caroline

What a damn treat. I’m gonna savor this when I get home from work. Thanks Novum

Alton

I actually learned about the show from watching a tutorial on how to do that double exposure effect in AE, it sounded interesting enough that I watched the first episode and I was hooked. I'm glad I gave it a go, because I had an assumption that McConaughey only played goofy characters before seeing this... he is so good in this.

Nate Dickson

You just made the last few hours of my work day bearable. Thank you! This probably is not the place to make a request or suggestion but I would love to get your thoughts and take on Darren Aronofskys, The Fountain one day.

fuzzydunlop0507

Ok wait a second you’re doing my favorite show! You just made my Monday!!!

Jessica Hudson

Gonna be the best 2h of my life, so ready
