I enjoyed this episode immensely! You've summed up my feelings to a bleeding T: it's got this great, weird feel in the back of it, Japanese fairy tale horror by way of Lucio Fulci's Gates of Hell trilogy with AA PS2 assets, and seeing as how all these things partake of dream logic and general slapped-togetherness, some jank is expected -- but they didn't have enough muscle power to give the Big Wrench the final quarter-turn. So you end up with something that's less than cult but which damned-well has all the raw materials. Regarding Fulci: he's terrible, but I can't stop watching. I really "like" the above-mentioned, but my favorite, with and without irony, is Conquest.
