The Karate Kid (1984) | Full Length Reaction

This was a movie that I have heard SO much about, yet knew SO little - I didn't even realize it'd be this wholesome, rad 80's Californian-esque movie that had a lot of heart :')) 🥋🌴🌊

I grew so attached to the character I CANNOT wait to watch the next ones hehe 🥋🌟❤️ IM INVESTED NOW

PS I apologize for the NJ slander in the beginning LMAO I couldn't help myself

Definitely watch Cobra kai after these!

Tom

What hurt me so much about Mr Miyagis backstory is how true to life it is. How when in WW2 the US forced all Japanese-American immigrants from their homes and into “relocation centers” taking their livelihoods from them. Despite being stripped of their rights and treated like livestock many men still went out of their way to serve and fight in the military. Even though Mr Miyagi was a highly decorated war hero and patriot his wife still died from the medical neglect our country gave to its own people just because of their heritage.

Please start cobra kai ASAP 🙏

So kind of a fun thing... my aunt Fran & Uncle Jimmy lived next to this abandoned school. I always wondered why it was always empty. One summer while I was visiting with my grandmother, these people were alllll over spray painting the grass in the field & walking around in groups. Turns out it was in preparation for Karate Kid. I have no memory of any filming though my mother said she remembered it. I do hoverer remember the paint & even the smell OF paint. If you watch it through again, you can see how little they actually covered. The field is realllllly dead. That because it WAS really dead. 😂 I'm not 100% on this but 99.99% sure it's the same school used for Summer School. Another good summer movie for another time. On a return trip after Karate Kid came out, my cousins & I goofed around in the field & shot some hoops. Wanna say it's in Woodland Hills, but again, I'd have to find their address. I can see their house. Telling you all "It's the prominent 70's brown, corner house..." probably not much help. 😂😂 Always so much fun! Thank you V

I remember when this came out in 1984, about a year after I graduated high school. It was released in June, and it was so popular that one of the local big theaters decided to have free showings for the Fourth of July. They had planned to only have like three showings in one of their theaters, but so many people showed up that they showed it in six different theaters from matinee through late at night, and they still couldn't get everybody in. The line at one point was literally about a half mile long. If you think you would like to see another good martial arts movie, I would recommend Dragon, the biopic of Bruce Lee, starring Jason Scott Lee (no relation).

Lol I knew you'd love this and Mr. Miyagi :) This will be one of your favorite franchises if you keep going :) Also as a person from New Jersey, well....I forgive you :)

OK, but you must watch How I Met Your Mother, Season 8 episode 22 - "The Bro Mitzvah" to learn the untold backstory of The Karate Kid!

Same! I used to live in a one stop town with a 4 lane highway running through it. We never crossed at the stop sign - we always dodged traffic on our bikes. Hell, my mom knew this because we had to cross the highway to visit her at the convenience store she worked in during the summer months!

Can confirm, this is the correct path

It's crazy how quickly things change. When I was a kid, I was never home except to eat and sleep. No parental supervision at all. No cellphones. I was out playing with friends, playing sports, and riding my bike everywhere. My friends and I would sometimes spend an entire weekend by ourselves hiking along the railroad tracks, camping, and getting into trouble. I'm not saying everything was better then, it was just different. Bullies were very common in my experience. When I see younger reactors act surprised at the level of bullying in the 80s, I just think: that's great. I'm so glad they didn't have to go through what we did

Watch Karate Kid 2 and 3, then jump to the Cobra Kai series

So hyped for this one! This was one of my favorite trilogies growing up. I highly recommend, if you are gonna watch the next two, to watch the Cobra Kai show at some point. Its a whole lot of fun. Oh yeah don't waste your time on the 2010 Karate Kid. Its okay, but theres a lot better stuff out there.

Ralph Macchio (Daniel) is actually 4 years older than William Zabka (Johnny). Some kung-fu films I like are Kung Fu Hustle (2004), Ip Man (2008) and Enter The Dragon (1973). Maybe House of Flying Daggers (2004) and Hero (2002).

Havnt watched yet but just reading your description Vicky brings me joy I already know I'm going to love your reaction 🙌 sure do hope you watch the next two and then the wholesome wonderful show cobra Kai

Ian

You can recommend whatever you like. V has been inundated with violent films so I'm just steering my suggestions to the lighter side for awhile. That said, a lot of martial art films don't have very good writing or acting, like Mortal Kombat (which is so bad that it is good and should also be on the list, lol). Then you got your period piece martial art films, House of Flying Daggers, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, the first Drunken Master film (1978), Five Deadly Venoms (1978). Then you got the endless supply of Samo Hung films well known for his comedy martial art style. Mr. Vampire (1985), well known for popularizing the Jiang Shi genera (hoping corpses, yes, hoping corpses...because they have rigor mortis, lol) is gold, imho, lol. I've already recommended the best 2 Stephen Chow films outside of Journey to the West. But then we start bleeding into samurai films, culminating with, imo, the epic battle between Zatoichi the Blind Samurai versus The One-Armed Swordsman. Then finally the legendary Akira Kurosawa films; Rashomon, Seven Samurai, Ikiru, Yojimbo and Sanjuro, Kagemusha, etc.

I laughed when Vee said she thought Daniel-san was in middle school! HA!

Mastervodo

A martial arts film poll without Bloodsport in it? That's just criminal. Ya gotta have that at least eligible, right?

WarriorPoet1980

Because of this film, every time I go into the ocean I am kicking the waves with karate to improve my life balance.

Mitchell Bowker

80's kids know Ali from Adventures in Babysitting. 80's was nice before the internet, but we were spreading so much misinformation from rumors. And then gaslighting each-other about it with our own anecdotes about how true it was. We couldn't look most of those rumors up.

Brian's Dog

I love it when people recognize the actress playing Ali, especially when they've seen The Boys.

Andrew T

I admit I was kind of triggered by Kung-Fu being the martial art of choice for this reboot.

Andrew T

Props for watching Kung Pow. That's one arguably obscure movie I always wished people would react to, but very few have.

Andrew T

Never seen a martial arts film?! V! You need a martial art film poll, lol. Make sure you have Shaolin Soccer, Kung-Fu Hustle, Sidekicks, and Legend of the Drunken Master (which is a real Kung-Fu style btw, lol) Karate Kid 2010 is sort of a remake, more of a reboot. There is some drama around it in the sense that Will Smith's son is the lead and they sort of rebooted (and flopped) just for him. Karate Kid 2 and 3 are legit sequels with both leads returning (2 is so beautiful and great, you absolutely need to see the second one if nothing else) and The Next Karate Kid is a new female student but same teacher. So, do you get the title of the film? The real karate kid is Mr. Miyagi. You're presented with Daniel being the center of the story but the truth of this film is about a boy learning about a World War 2 survivor that lost everything and is passing on what he knows so that his wisdom lives on.

Raptor

Great reaction! You are now qualified to watch the short video 'The Karate Kid: Daniel is the REAL Bully', 15 Million views can't be wrong.

Brian's Dog

Kobra Kai is a continuation after the films. It brings back some of the main original actors. Its truly a TV show nobody expected to be as good as it is. Everybody who has seen it that ive watched said its a unforgettable expirance. I want to suggest you react to it at some point for your channel after you have seen all the films. Yes, even the Jackie Chan version.

Thats MR. Baldamort

Oh wow, now it's time to watch Cobra Kai

MrAlexSan

And welcome to life as a Gen X kid

The Dingo

Oh and parents vetting - again, not a thing in the 80's. See last comment about the Boomers

The Dingo

Also, the schools didn't care about fighting - the teachers were just like our parents - Boomers who didn't really care much about what we were doing.

The Dingo

As a fan of these movies when I was a kid, and a huge fan of the Cobra Kai show on Netflix as an adult, I'm really hoping you'll check out Cobra Kai after the films. Final season kicks off this month!

WarriorPoet1980

FYI - yes our parents in the 80's trusted us to go home alone on our own All The Time

The Dingo

This will be a great journey, you'll have to watch Cobra Kai after the movies.

Joe Mallard

Really excited to watch this movie again. The friendship between Daniel and Mr. Miyagi was really the highlight of the movie; they worked so well together.
