A subtle tragedy with Jeong-Jeong is that he views his firebending in such a negative light, as a curse, rather than the passion, energy, and life it is. He recognizes the Sun as in perfect harmony with nature and as the greatest source of fire in the world yet is blind to the fact that fire and firebending can be so too. Society would never have gotten anywhere it was now in any of the four nations without fire to cook, provide light and warmth or alter the environment through fire necessary crafts such as metalworking or pottery. It clearly shows how messed up and wrong the Fire nation and their philosophy in firebending is for him to not only hold the opinions he does, but to instill them into the avatar of all people. The modern Fire Nation focuses on hate, rage and aggression to fuel the inner fire of their firebending. Jeong-Jeong might have recognized this, but he hasn't gone back to the old ways, the light side of firebending, at least not overtly. He seems convinced that Firebending's dark side is its true nature, from the talk of "being eventually torn apart". Which leads to Aang learning a similar wrong lesson as his mentor from his mistake, to never firebend again due to the destruction that fire can cause if misused.
