Chicanery is one of the best episodes in the show. Full stop. Can't beat a good court-room episode now and again.

Saltire

This is it in a nutshell. We see how Chuck was fine when Jimmy was in the mailroom, and they had a sociable though not a glowingly warm relationship with each other. All Chuck's problems start when Jimmy becomes a lawyer. Jimmy is infiltrating his world, and the law is sacrosanct to Chuck, and he knows that Jimmy doesn't respect it, but will use his legal tools to further himself and hurt others. Thats the straw that breaks the camels back, and when Jimmy does his hero stuff in series one, thats when Chuck starts to get vindictive towards him.

Saltire

I like that Jimmy drops the bravado at the end scene, and we see his vulnerability and self-esteem issues with Kim; as he knows she's too good for him, but she is also like him in many ways that we see throughout the show and they are going to be a formidable duo together. When they hold hands, it makes an "M" sign showing that both will have each others back.

Saltire

Chuck is a d bag. end of story. And that last shot, or any of the ones in the series like it, are poster-worthy imo. And a bunch of the wide shots too. Thnx V. Always enjoy your insights.

I love glass brick walls. Such a vibe.

Chuck didn't want to take Jimmy's offer for Jimmy to stop practicing the law because Jimmy was offering to do so in exchange for something (I forget the specifics, but I think it had to do with Kim being stuck in document review). Under those circumstances, that could be considered a bribe, or something like that. Say what you will about Chuck, but he absolutely will not, under any circumstances, break the law. Now, he has Jimmy dead to rights, legally speaking. All he wants is for Jimmy to not be a lawyer. For Chuck, Jimmy being a lawyer is a perversion, something unholy, like having sex in church or something. He does love Jimmy, but he is also driven by jealousy, rage, pettiness, and a sense of vindictiveness. He'd be fine with Jimmy succeeding at anything else in the world, except the law.

I just had a thought this is season 3 episode 3. Chuck is trying to downplay the negative character of Jimmy by telling the authority that Jimmy has a good heart. In breaking bad season 3 episode 3 was I.F.T where after Skyler called the cops on Walt for "breaking in" she downplayed him saying that he hasn't done anything illegal even though he has!

I don't think it's underrated, just not that many people watched it compared to the big ones like Breaking Bad.

No it isn't. L Take

It's a good episode but holy heck is it overrated

What Jimmy said to Chuck when the cops came and got him, shook Chuck. That's why he changed his mind to offer the PPD instead of jail time. Chuck is too prideful but what Jimmy said made him think. You see how he almost broke when telling Hay that Jimmy has a good heart. He won't let it go but he thinks he thought of an alternative that will at least soften the punishment on Jimmy. Jimmy's best bet is to make Chuck think that Jimmy has no choice but to walk away from Chuck as his brother, forever. That Chuck is driving him away. Chuck thinks of himself as the good guy, the guy that deserves good things. If Chuck thinks for one minute that he made a massive mistake and he really is the bad guy, it would destroy Chuck. That's why Chuck is sick, I bet on it. Chuck didn't get sick until after he heard the Jimmy got his law degree online and went behind Jimmy's back to prevent him getting a job at HHM. Then Chuck got sick on a fake disease. A made up disease that only he, a brilliant problem solver and not in any way a medical professional, can manage. He subconsciously feels guilty for being the bad guy but his rational mind won't let him realize it. Subconscious guilt can manifest as pain. He knows his brother is right, but Chuck's pride refuses to let acknowledge it. Then Jimmy said he was going to die alone. And that reality sunk in. I've seen it before in addicts and in people having manic episodes, protecting their paranoia and pride, punishing others for imagined slights, giving ultimatums and pushing loved ones away, crossing the line on "tough love for their benefit" bs; then the solitude sets in, realizing they're alone now. No one will help them. No one will be by their side if they die. Chuck was cured for that brief moment him and his brother were working together on that case. Only after realizing what he just did (walk outside with zero pain), did he 'rationalize' it and that's when the imagined pain came back. Border patrol checks all commercial transport vehicles. Random checks are on civilian vehicles. All commercial vehicles have to be checked. That's federal regulations; FDA regs on consumables products, like Ice Cream from Mexico, lol. Its why we have weight stations all along the highways and interstates. All commercial vehicles hauling products must stop at least once in each state and be cleared. At the border, though, all commercial vehicles must stop and weight in before entering the country.

Your favorite shot is mine as well, making my Desktop

Mr. Robot is God tier TV, criminally underrated

Mathieu Paquin

Exactly, he is the kind of villain that wants to be seen as the good guy

Gabriel Berilli

Mike really has a sense of honor and justice, and it's crazy to see how Gus really plays on that to pull Mike into criminal activity.

Thaddeus Winterson

The doctor who gave Mike the drugs is Gus's doctor who treated him when he used the poison in Mexico in BB.

Huffster999

Nice job noticing Jimmy hasn't taken off the ring. You'll see it referenced regularly throughout the show.

Jorge Hernandez

The absolute audacity of Chuck to say, "And I believe you can change. You'll find your path. And when you're ready, I will be there to help you walk that path." I seem to recall a certain someone responding to Jimmy spending his nights getting his law degree while working in a mailroom with, "I know what you were, what you are. People don't change. You're Slippin' Jimmy!"

Zack

Also, when Bill Oakley described the ADA assigned to Jimmy's case as "tough but fair" it reminded me of the episode with Tuco and the skater twins in the desert. Perhaps it was a subtle call back?

Tim Martin

I disagree with your bit in the outro about Chuck wanting to be the reason Jimmy quits the law. The way I see it, the reason Chuck didn't accept Jimmy's offer of stepping away from the law in S2 is because under the circumstances it was extortion, which is illegal. Chuck holds the rule of law as the most sacred thing, clearly even above family loyalty. Chuck obviously views Jimmy being a lawyer as dangerous - "a chimp with a machine gun" - but; he's willing to simply have Jimmy's license taken away without him having to face jail time. I think that is a sign that he doesn't truly just want to punish him, but that he really really doesn't want him to be a lawyer and is willing to entrap him legally to do it. They're both crafty & clever at getting what they want: Chuck uses his wealth of knowledge on the law to get it within its bounds, Jimmy uses his wealth of knowledge on... well, scamming to get it however aha! Yes, that is the same Francesca from BB. We also saw Tyrus standing behind Gus! :) One thing that BB & BCS have utilised very effectively is hiring comedians/comic actors as their side characters. BB had Bill Burr (Kuby) & Lavell Crawford (Huell) and obviously Bob Odenkirk (Saul) BCS has Bob + Tina Parker (Francesca), Peter Diseth (Bill Oakley), Joe Derosa (The Vet) & Mark Proksch (Pryce) + more Not particularly sure why, but all these funny guys do a great job in shows that aren't explicitly comedies. I certainly didn't catch it the first time, but the intro was a flash-forward to Breaking Bad times when Gus' truck is the one making the trip (notice the shoes are old & the STOP sign is shot up), no doubt helped by Mike's stunt here! I have no idea how the writers came up with that lol

Max Hassam

By how you are liking all those shots in BCS, especially those wide shots, you gotta look into watchting Mr. Robot someday. Not only is it insane with it's shots but on every other front as well. Truly one of my favorite shows together with Utopia, BRB, BCS. Utopia also has those insanely creative shots btw.

vSoulreaver

Just one more until chicanery 😍
