There are 3 different age systems used in Korea. 만나이 which is international age, 세는나이 which is Korean age and 엔나이 which is like a combo of the other two. So since not everyone reads hangul I'm just going to call 만나이 international age, 세는나이 I will call k age and 엔나이 I'm going to call combo. I'll do a brief explanation of how they work and when they are used. Then I'll explain the military part. So since we know how international age works I'm just going to skip it. So for k age, when you are born you are considered 1 yr old and on the 1st of January you become 2 yr old. So for me I was born March 17th so then come January 1st I would be considered 2 years old even though for international age I would be considered 10 months. This applies even if you were born on Dec 31st, the next day you would be considered 2 yr old. For combo age you are considered 0 yr old when born like with international age but you would be considered 1 yr old on Jan 1st like k age. As for when they are used. K age is used pretty much for hierarchy and knowing which honorifics to use. International age is used for official things like paperwork and I think some laws. The combo age is used for things like what age someone can drink or smoke and the it's also used for military. Ok so for the military. Korean men have to enlist between the age of 18-28. They can postpone their enlistment but they will have to enlist by the end of the year they turn 28. So lets say a Korean male turned 28 Jan 1st 2023 according to the combo age. He would legally have to enlist by Dec 31st 2023, because he would be considered 29 Jan 1st 2024 according to the combo age. As for the BTS rule some men in the entertainment industry can postpone their enlistment until I believe the combo age of 30. However they have to get recommendations from the Ministry AND the military manpower administration has to approve the recommendation. So to use Jin as an example, he was born 12/04/92. So according to the combo age on 01/01/1993 he was considered 1 yr old. On 01/01/2022 using the combo system Jin would be considered 30 yr old. Since the BTS rule lets you pushback till your combo age of 30 he would have to enlist by Dec 31st 2022 since Jan 1st 2023 he would be considered 31. Side note the military amendment isn't actually called the BTS rule and it does not only apply to BTS, most people just call it that because BTS was the reason the amendment was made. My dad didn't know if the military would adopt the change in the Korean age system and I haven't been able to find anything confirming they will or will not. Now with all that being said please keep in mind that this is my understanding of what I was told and I'm not that smart so it's possible that I may not have understood or misunderstood some details because I'll be honest by brain fried, cracked and exploded while trying to understand all this.

2023-05-06 13:34:25 +0000 UTCWhen it comes to military I think it changed after Ravi (VIXX) scandal that he was trying to avoid enlistment and had a trial in court (and after that he posted a letter to apologize for his actions involving military-related corruption. And after that he had been booked for evading military service, with prosecutors demanding a two-year prison sentence.) But not only him trying to do that in the past many idols and actors did that. But in Kai's situation I'm really pissed of on South Korea government. I'm ARMY (BTS) but knowing how many time all of the members had to prepare to enlistment, especially Heosok and Namjoon (because they're in the same as Kai and his EXO member Sehun) and how many plans they could do before enlistment it was okey but when Kai had prepared all staffs in next month and nothing ofthem can be done is bad.
