Dark City (1998) First Time Watching! Full Movie Reaction!!

Dark City (1998) First Time Watching! Full Movie Reaction!!

Comments

I was gonna watch along but it seems like everyone hates this version lmao

f hf

Oddly enough, I’ve only seen the theatrical cut so I’m anchored to that but have always loved it as-is.

Ricardo Alanis

It's been a long time since I've seen the theatrical release of this movie. Wow. It's really a very different movie. I can't believe they have Kiefer lay it all out at the beginning of the movie in that opening monologue. That takes away so much, in my opinion. I'm going to have to watch the directors cut again.

TGrimace

Chris Nolan and Heath Ledger used so much of THE CROW in their interpretation of the Joker in THE DARK KNIGHT

Jason Dolan

Yeah, I didn't know Trevor Jones had it in him. I loved his stuff on MISSISSIPPI BURNING and ANGEL HEART, but this was next level.

Philip Davetas

😂

I think that would have made for a fantastic Batman film! -Sam

This one has been on our list for a long time! We need some more Terry Gilliam on the channel! -Sam

Yeah, I just watch the YT edit and I'm like, "Dude, you're asking the wrong questions." The theatrical cut just confuses things and steers in the wrong direction. You inevitably get there, but it's a clunky ride.

Philip Davetas

If you dig flicks like this, you should watch some fim noir. And that's what this movie was supposed to be until Goyer got involved and made it sci-fi.

Philip Davetas

Yes to all of the above. They all hit differently as an adult, but they can transport us back in time to some degree.

Guston Zimasheen

Unfortunately this is one of those situations where watching the theatrical version instead of directors cut really burned your overall experience: directors cut helps with some of the issues you mentioned having with the movie. Sort of like how the movie Kingdom Of Heaven goes from being pretty crummy with the theatrical cut, to maybe Ridley Scotts best movie he’s ever made when you watch the directors cut.

This one also has one of my favorite trailers. For such a good trailer, I don't recall it getting much play. The only time I saw it in the theater at the time was before Mortal Kombat: Annihilation, meaning it was the only good part of the experience of going to that showing. :) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gt9HkO-cGGo

Now that I've actually seen the reaction, I'm reversing my opinion: I'm sad you didn't watch the director's cut because it sounds like it would've improved the movie in exactly the ways you wanted. The Director's Cut not only unfolds the mystery in the way you describe, it's also 10 minutes longer, adding little extensions here and there, which would probably have helped the film feel less like it was moving at a breakneck pace. A shame, but what can you do?

Tyler Foster

I didn’t even realize I owned the directors cut and had only been watching that cut until I started your commentary and had to switch to Amazon Prime and now I’m remembering this is the version I saw in theaters so many years ago

Jason Dolan

A score so epic it was used to great effect in the theatrical trailer for the first X-Men movie.

Kyle

I would have loved to see an Alex Proyas directed Batman movie. This and The Crow have me convinced that his version of Gotham would have that perfect balance between "realistic gritty" and "comic book gritty". There's an alternate universe where Proyas took over in the 90's after Tim Burton stopped directing and then the movies got better instead of worse.

Brandon

I would highly second Knowing, a great film. Another great film with an indirect connection to this is Phone Booth. Of course the greatest film by this director is Gods of Egypt, a highly regarded film. Hmmm, why is my nose growing?

Andrew Roach

I hadn't seen this movie in such a long time, and it was great watching this again with y'all. Here's some of my favorite sci-fi movies of the 80's: The Last Starfighter (1984, Lance Guest) The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension (1984, Peter Weller) Enemy Mine (1985, Dennis Quaid) Tron (1982, Jeff Bridges) Explorers (1985, Ethan Hawke)

A good high concept- low budget film. It did ok in the theaters at the time, but The Matrix came out a year later and this one pretty much faded from most movie goers memory. I enjoyed it when it came out in theaters, but the director's cut is superior

Smooticus

Many people didn't see it in theaters but it was a big hit on video and grew a huge following along with the likes of other sci fi classics like "Blade Runner" and "The Abyss".

Mr. Writhms

I agree with some others, that the director’s cut is much better. And I didn’t realize until this viewing, that I’ve seen nothing but the director’s cut. I’ve been a big disc person since DVDs began, and all I’ve watched is the DC, having missed the theatrical release. And I definitely agree with Sam about the voice. 😶

David Wilkins

Rats, not the director's cut? Bummer. Still, great to have the hugely underappreciated film get some attention, and will happily check out the reaction regardless.

Guy Gordon

Your comments about having the film slowly ramping up the mystery, can be found in the Director's Cut. The other Alex Proyas film you should give a watch is Knowing (2009) with Nicholas Cage. It's got a little of that Crow/Dark City vibe but in a completely different context.

Michael SCH

Sci-Fi, Detective Noir, Horror, Mystery, Thriller... that's Dark City. All the great films are hard to categorize.

PIG

Director's cut is better but luckily my blu-ray also has the other version we don't speak of.

Odd Thomas

Looking forward to this Great Reaction

christopher brown

I can't watch this yet, because I am at work and I have just discovered that the director's cut is the version that plays whether you watch the theatrical cut or director's cut entries on YouTube Movies and TV. However, the main difference between the theatrical and director's cuts, aside from some other little alterations to the visual effects and some additional material, is that the voice-over narration at the beginning is removed, allowing the viewer to solve the mystery with John instead of simply being told what's going on upfront. It's a much more organic approach and I prefer it, but the movie is still great regardless.

Tyler Foster

A reaction EVENT! I'm very hyped for this, yes. Thank you, Mr. Glasses and Mrs. Hair.

Mr. Writhms

BRAZIL 1985 is another great futuristic sifi I hope you guys get to check out some time 🤘

Matt

I actually prefer the theatrical I think. I saw it in theater back in ‘98 and the intro dips into the mystery but you still have no idea how deep it goes. It was one of the best intros to a movie I saw back in the 90s!

PIG

I might be more excited for your reaction to this than any other movie in a long while. Not many people have seen it I’m afraid.

PIG

Yes! Been waiting for this watch along!

Nicotti

Great movie! Kinda bummed you're not watching the director's cut since the theatrical cut pretty much spoils the setting in the first few minutes.

Sebastian Forsberg

Loooooooove this movie...like a moody comic book noir come to life...but in a good way. That, and Rufus Sewell, who always plays a piece of shit and a bad guy, gets to be the hero in this one. I will add that the director's cut is a bit better--some of the scenes and characters are a bit more fleshed out, and it removes the narration in the beginning so you're just thrown into the deep end. Even so, this movie still rocks. Good shit.
