Character bio #7: Dalarius Frin

The people of Paardenrust have no particular idiom for someone of great wealth, but if they did, it might be "as rich as a Frin".
The Frins are old money, from other parts of the country. Where that money came from isn't too clear, and - even after all these years - rumours persist about illegal gold mines on the Reef, or perlemoen smuggling in the Cape. But, in reality, there's no proof that the Frins accumulated their wealth through anything other than decades of hard work across multiple generations, and the grumblings of a few jealous old men don't mean much.
Once their fortune had been well and truly made, more than a century ago, the family decided that working was a sucker's game. An ancestor, Jeremiah Frin, travelled the country, looking for somewhere to settle down and begin working on what he felt mattered: the family's legacy. Paardenrust was chosen, and the Frins moved in, constructing for themselves a palatial estate along the banks of the Crocodile River that runs alongside the town. It is a most impressive construction, complete with a stable for their pack of pure-bred riding gryphons—which they lease out to the Lord for personal use.
Once they were settled—and to the surprise of the residents, who had been watching the expensive estate go up with jealous eyes—they expanded their scope, embarking on a public-works program across the town that improved and modernised several ageing services. Some, such as a telephone line, put Paardenrust well ahead of its neighbours in modernity and comfort at the time. Such upgrades were instrumental in Paardenrust attracting people from across the country who wanted a pleasant get away without giving up too many modern conveniences: directly leading to its status as a holiday town today.
The improvements done by the Frins over the years have earned them a lot of goodwill. The majority of the inhabitants today consider them friendly, upstanding, and an asset to the town. And, while some might dislike the family as a whole, everyone is agreed that Dalarius Frin—the youngest Frin still living in the town—is a very competent and liked alderman. Many would back him for Mayor if such a thing were possible.
Due to Paardenrust's complicated history, it just so happens that the incumbent Lord of Paardenrust Manor is, automatically and legally, the town's Mayor. At the same time, the family residing there long ago realised that social dynamics in the world were changing, and people would soon begin wondering why they were letting a rarely-seen figure who didn't even live in the town proper make decisions that directly affected them. Thus, they signed an uncontested amendment into the town's charter that ensured that the incumbent Lord's de facto control over Paardenrust's council would only be binding in a case where the town had no alderman. No alderman had existed before that, but one was quickly elected, and so began the history of a self-governing Paardenrust.
There have been eighteen aldermen in Paardenrust since then, and Dalarius Frin is the youngest by a good margin. At twenty-five, he's been an alderman for three years: after school, he spent four years overseas studying politics and ancient history, then returned to Paardenrust. He immediately ran for alderman on a rather unique platform: young enough to not have had time to develop grudges against anyone in town, independently wealthy enough to not be susceptible to bribes, and educated enough to know how to do the job. Remarkably, it succeeded, and—to even Dalarius' surprise—he was installed as alderman, promptly setting to work to make good on his campaign promises.
Things seemed on the up-and-up for Dalarius, and it was only going to get better. Years before, in his mid-teens, he met someone: a lovely young impala ewe named Pietra. It had all the signs of a love meant to be, and the two were quickly inseparable. They remained together throughout school, and just before Dalarius left for university, they were engaged.
Surprising their families, perhaps, the engagement lasted, and when Dalarius returned from university and took up his position as alderman, a dream wedding seemed imminent. But, when pressed, the couple would just chuckle and say that they weren't in a rush. Which was true, but not quite for the inferred reasons.
Both of them had changed since their star-struck engagement. The years apart, during a critical time in their individual developments, had resulted in them becoming people that were different from the ones they remembered in each other. They still cared for one another, certainly, and they still intended to get married…but the urgency of that faded with each year. Dalarius' job kept him busy every day, making it hard to find time to spend together, while Pietra's work at the local pub kept her out late, and often exhausted when arriving home.
The years passed, and the couple remained together, if a little more distant than before. Arguments became a little more frequent, but they made up after. Yet doubts began assembling in Dalarius' mind. He was successful—they both were. And even though they worked, they didn't need to; his family's wealth would always be available if they chose to take up lives of indolence. They had both agreed that children weren't necessary for either of them for at least another decade. They wanted for nothing…so why had they not gotten married yet?
Pietra broke the ice first. After a long and awkward conversation, full of avoided pain and dodged topics, they agreed to a trial separation. Some time apart to think things over, and find a new way forward. Dalarius nodded and smiled, agreeing with every point and adding a few of his own. It was the right thing to do, for sure. They would figure out who they each were now, and how they could be together again. Stronger next time. Definitely. No doubt.
That evening found Dalarius in the pub, seated on a lowered toilet seat, holding his pounding head in his hands as the aftermath of a long afternoon of drinking began to kick in. A lot of thoughts were running through his head, and it took him a while to hear the "psst" emanating from the next stall. When he looked over, all he could see was a hole in the divider — and a tongue lapping behind it.
His and Pietra's sex life had suffered when they'd begin drifting apart. He knew that. And they were separated. And he felt really shit right now...and an orgasm could help with that. He'd never tried a glory hole before…but why not?
And so it was, after fucking a warm, anonymous mouth that was then unexpectedly—but thrillingly—replaced with a warm ass, Dalarius realised that he was bisexual…and a whole new, somewhat confusing chapter of his life began.
Character
Dalarius is a character that has felt for almost all his life that he knows what he's going to be. His path was planned out, and he stuck to it with rigour, reaping what he felt were the rewards he deserved. Backed by the support of a family that had the resources to indulge in investing most of their time in guiding a sole child through childhood, he reached adulthood well-balanced and ready for the future.
The subsequent breakdown of his engagement has caused him some distress, as it flies in the face of the success he'd had in other areas in his life, but that pales in comparison to the confusion and burgeoning self-doubt brought on by his realisation that he enjoys having sex with men. He struggles with this, not because he's ashamed of it, or has been shamed for it, but simply because he had no idea about this side of himself. It has made him start wondering what else about himself that he takes for granted needs to be re-examined.
Kinks & Sexual Ethology
- Dalarius has rather vanilla tastes from a decade spent in a straightforward monogamous relationship. He enjoys romance, in all its most kitschy forms.
- His growing awareness of male attraction has brought with it an interest in the more carnally equal nature of male relationships, and a desire to not only assert his mild dominance, but have it reversed on to him. He'll let you fuck him - but it's his turn after.
Design Goals
Dalarius is a Butler-tier character and has been designed to the client's specifications. The primary themes for him are nascent bisexuality, a little uncertainty, and a deep love of flip-flopping.
