Main character design
Added 2020-04-19 14:32:41 +0000 UTCHey guys :) So the first thing I want to finalise is the design of the player character. I've narrowed it down to two choices; while I'm definitely open to hearing other options still, they'll have to be pretty compelling :)
The main points the playable character's design needs to address are:
- Attractiveness. Naturally. It needs to look pleasant. This is pretty much sorted by choosing a 20-something stallion as the character.
- Visual simplicity. By this I mean elements like complex hair that could partly cover the face and move about when the character's orientation changes, or complex clothing with lots of detail. As artwork of the player will show up the most, anything that makes them slower or more expensive to draw will impact the project the most of any character.
- Distinctiveness. I want people to be able to see artwork of the character and go "oh that's Bubba Chubba from LotM". (Bubba Chubba's the final name, btw. That's locked in. Can't even change it in game. Nope). This makes the character both better-known, and good for advertising. Elements like markings, hairstyle and jewelry will be the primary tools to achieve distinctiveness.
With those points in mind, I've picked two breeds:
Norwegian Fjord

You may know of this breed from Frozen, or from fandom horses like Aurelius and Granite. Despite their striking looks, they're not all that common, probably because few people have seen one in person
This is the option I'm personally leaning towards. It has a number of advantages in my mind: the manes of these horses are often cropped short, which completely obviates the issue with drawing long manes; the pale hair tone will allow the cock and balls to be coloured very dark, which will make for excellent contrast; and they've never been in a furry game I can think of, let alone as a playable character.
Blue Roan

A more "typical" looking horse, this breed is also not too common in the fandom. I can only think of "Darkstallion" offhand as a user with a sona of one. The darkness of this breed stands in direct contrast to the lightness of the Fjords, and I certainly do have a weakness for dark horses. However, the body can actually be quite light in shade, as in the second image, which makes the darkness on the muzzle, legs and tail look stunning in contrast.
The advantages with this breed are, again, the relative rarity, and the innate markings. I also feel as though this breed has a chance to look the most attractive. They tend to have spots and stippling all over which can easily be adapted into unique markings, and they also have facial brandings that could be changed as needed. The manes are long, but there's ways around that.
So, what do you think? Does one of these speak to you more than the other, or do you have another option you think I should consider?
Comments
I don't think it would offend people. They might prefer a different breed, certainly, but unless they're backing the project and voicing their concerns, I'm not going to listen to them :P If anything, I'd say picking a human would lead to some people being offended if they have to play "yet another gay white male" or whatever choice I made for how he should look. I've learned that the best way to get good results from my work is to create things I personally would enjoy. That ends up delivering the best quality. There definitely is an argument to be made that a human protagonist would open up some doors, but at the same time, a horse protagonist lets me do things I can't do with a human. I have some story moments in mind that only work well with a horse.

2020-05-12 06:44:40 +0000 UTCYou don't have to make many humans, only the MC and then will have a chance to draw all types of horses you like as other characters. Because if you make the MC a horse, you will give a preference to a certain breed, and others will be offended, you know...
