Buddy Matthews may be done with AEW

Buddy Matthews may be done with AEW for a while, or at least on his way out, sources familiar with the situation tell Fightful.

After this week's AEW Rampage Grand Slam, Fightful was informed that the Great Muta spot was a way to write Buddy Matthews off television for the time being. We weren't given context as to whether or not Matthews was being released, but had heard numerous times over the previous couple of months that he'd expressed dissatisfaction regarding his situation. Specifics of that aren't yet known.

One source contacted Fightful after the New York City tapings and said they believed it was Buddy's "last night," but that hasn't been confirmed.

This weekend at Fight Life Pro Wrestling, Buddy told the audience “Unfortunately, tonight, I’m going to be the bearer of some unfortunate news. As everyone knows, the House of Black has had some issues lately. As all the members of the house, I speak beyond the wall, we want to thank you all for being members of the house. Unfortunately, I, like some of the other members, need to go away for a while. I need to recalibrate. I need to figure out some things. As my brother Malakai once said, this isn’t goodbye, this is see you later.”

House of Black's Malakai Black is also effectively done with AEW, with sources indicating that he's unable to wrestle for WWE for "quite some time."

Fightful has reached out to Buddy Matthews several times over the last couple of months to follow up on the rumors.

Seems like this is what happens when you sign too much talent to your roster without long term booking plans that realistically fit into the tv time you have. I'm really starting to worry about where AEW is heading. Tony's booking seems to be sign big names to get a crowd pop and short term ratings, then the talent becomes stagnant, and when they say so, Tony books them poorly because he didn't plan anything for them after their initial signing. I think AEW is going to continue losing former WWE talent due to a bloated roster and The continuous signing of new talent which just makes it more difficult to book your current roster well. No idea what will happen going forward with The Elite probably falling to the wayside even once they return. AEW does have enough high tier talent, maybe too much. Jericho, Mox, Omega, Hangman, Pac, Young Bucks, Darby, Wardlow, MJF, Adam Cole, Lucha Bros, Best Friends, Orange Cassidy, Garcia, Danielson, Claudio, Kingston, Sammy, and many more, like holy shit the list goes on and on, and that's not even including the Female roster which is loaded as well. Now add all the other talent on the roster, and that's too many people. You're going to end up having to release a bunch of talent because there is no way 3 hours a week will be enough to get everyone enough screen time to tell actual stories. This next year is going to define the future of AEW.

Interesting because both him and Malakai were two of those “man why did you sign him” guys (at least that was the internet sentiment) and now they are both taking some time off. Interesting.
