Hey guys! Today, we shed some light on a topic that many of you may be wondering about: our first design ideas regarding the Folktails!
To give a bit of context, in our story, the Folktails are the mysterious natives which populate the mountain ranges surrounding the Grand Azazel Hotel (and not just). As descendants of elder shamans and healers, their closest human counterpart would be the Native American population.
Their occupations and traditions revolve more around satisfying spirituality, cultivating their culture and gathering knowledge in an attempt to live in communion with nature, rather than taking a technologically-enhanced approach. However, this does not mean that they are completely strict about utilizing modern technology and engineering; they just only use what directly helps them achieve this intimate bond with the 'great outdoors' :P
The town inhabitants see them as shady, manipulative practitioners with connections to the metaphysical, thus they usually tend to avoid interacting with them and even go as far as discriminating against them over such things as their rank in modern society. It is often difficult for them to interact with the modern world, which leads them to isolate themselves up in the mountains, living as part of modern tribes.
To make a living, they have found solace in the pharmaceutical industry. Skilled in the art of preparing blends, herbs, potions and other crafts that are sought to have mystical/curative powers, they utilized their gathered knowledge to create their own chain of supply and demand, offering people solutions in alternative medicine and traditional advice.
Aaanyway, all that rambling aside, let's talk about their appearance! As you have probably noticed already from the sketches (made by Rauch), we planned on being yet again somewhat unconventional :P Bit too unconventional, aye? Our idea was to give them a more furry outlook instead, to better highlight the social discrepancy element of a world dominated by scalie figures, where 'furries' are a minority.
We opted for the cervine base design, as it offered more unique possibilities in terms of portraying traditionalism and ancient wisdom. As for clothing, they are fond of more traditionally-oriented attire, by contrast with the rest of the world. The names of the designs are just orientative.
All things aside, which types do you guys like more/feel would fit better with the Folktail lore, and why? Let us know in the comments! :3
