Identity - Update a.09

Hey guys! Sorry for the delay! Today, we're bringing you a new update of Identity! It brings more story alternatives to the events occurring after the gym scene (we're focusing on this particular thread so we can write everything up until the end of the prologue there), a whole new title screen (and a new music theme to go with it!) as well other improvements!

Probably the most noticeable change brought by this update is the first overhaul of the title screen. That's right, we've finally scrapped the placeholder art and replaced it with our first title screen concept. We've also changed the UI layout and added a hover effect for the buttons. Sound effects for the UI elements will soon follow, as well as other overall improvements to the layout of the other menu screens. Check out this post where we talk about our concepts and ideas for the title screen in more detail!

Also, our sprite artist, Folsky, has been working hard on revamping the sprites! Needless to say is that our sprites were kinda blurred and inaccurately sized because we had little experience handling them previously. Now however, we've increased the base resolution in which we create them and focused on streamlining a concrete art style for all of them. The first two improved sprites, those of Garreth (happy-neutral) and Cedrik (neutral) have been added in place of the old ones, with many more to come! ^_^

Of course, not everything is pink and unicorns. It turns out that one downside of using custom functions for sfx playback results in crashes on our mobile builds. The Android version of Renpy isn't as evolved as the PC ones, so incompatibility is frequent the moment you try to add custom functionality. Nevertheless, we're working on finding a solution on this and will update the download links for the Android build as soon as possible.

What do you guys think about this update? And especially about the new title screen music that was added? Let us know in the comments, as we're eager to know your opinions! :3

Changelog

 - Added more alternative routes to the Brymror after-gym events.
- Added new backgrounds: tablet closeups during the gym scene if you decide to check the duffel bag.
- Began remaking sprites. Replaced the old Cedrik (neutral) and Garreth (neutral-happy) sprites with the newly remade ones.
- Replaced the placeholder title screen artwork with an early concept for the intended scene.
- Added title screen music theme.
- Changed the UI layout of the title screen.
- Fixed some bugs related to the automated sfx playback (including one where the beginning ambience music would keep playing on loop forever even though it shouldn't).
- Made minor adjustments to the story and dialogue across latest routes.

That is because we set the silence to the beginning of the music file instead of the end. Will have that corrected in the next update.

Here's a small problem I've found. The music of the title takes a long time to be hear, and it's generally takes short time to start the story unless you enter the option-settings. I think this spoils the mood which you want to show.

I mean, from the very start of the game it is already split into two tangents based on a seemingly arbitrary & random choice which if you guys ran statistics I'm sure will come out to around 50/50 choice by players. It just kind of feels like you guys are doing two times the work without a real benefit. Yeah, So..... thats that basically. But all in all I found the story and game to be really unique and achieving good progress so far and I think the quality is excellent - the only problem I felt was in the long tangents resulting from seemingly random, arbitrary choices.

I want to make a suggestion - even though I can understand that there isn't too much content given that this is a new project, I think focus should be put on maybe a single story line rather than this branching out stuff. The choices feel kind of meaningless right now and only serve to make it so that you guys need to do more work. The whole point of choices is to customize the player experience, not randomize it. If I'm offered an option "sleep by the oak tree" or "go to the cliff" the player has no knowledge or knows whats going on, as such they make the choice randomly. So now already from the start you have to deal with two routes just for a random choice. Further down the line in the gym you have a choice of either listening in or following Brymror. This feels really arbitrary to me to have this choice split into two paths again. Or simply make it more directly obvious to us what the player is choosing. Even in terms of general game development, I get that you guys might be going for a 'your choices are not immediately obvious and have other effects' but that is only effective when the choices the player make and their impact have some sort of reflective quality on those choices in retrospect. In this case it just feels really arbitrary and despite the work you guys put into making choices and branches to make the player feel more in control, the player actually feels less in control of the story.

But...I found nothing about the bug? Wierd.

Because I'm at school, I can only play Android version. It's a pity that I must wait until Saturday if I want to play it on PC.

Made a slight error and forgot to include one of the backgrounds in the build. It's fixed now, the download links should be pointing towards the right build ^^
