Direct Painting, Pt. 1

This is the first of three parts and it goes through the tools and concepts I am using in the block in stage of this project. I am painting on a piece of linen mounted onto an archival hardboard panel. I am drawing with graphite at first and then, at the end, heightening that block in with raw umber and flake white.

Any particular reason for that?

Raw Umber 99 out of 100 times is what I use.

Hi Stephen, I love this portrait! I was wondering why you use raw umber here instead of burnt umber. Love your teaching!

Marion de Jong

Just a thin layer of oil paint rubbed on and then left to dry. It's referred to as an "imprimatura."

Hi Stephen, love the colour of your canvas! Do you know how can I make it like that? Thanks! 😊

Thanks. They will be much appreciated.

Sure thing, Pat. I’ll send you a few links soon to halo you in your way.

Hi Stephen, I would very much like to do this month’s assignment, but I have never painted. The only color work I have done to date is with colored pencils and Pitt pastels. Do you have any suggestions for how I could/should proceed? Thanks.
