Mount Eerie, Robert Popper, Allan Lichtman (Office Hours+ Ep 319)

We contained multitudes this week including an unhinged zoom with Tim's only friend Robert Popper discussing his new book The Elsie Drake Letters and making some prank calls that possibly broke international law, and then Mount Eerie performing "Empty Paper Towel Roll" and "I Spoke with a Fish" from the new album Night Palace.

PLUS, a fun second-half hang with Mount Eerie's main man Phil Elverum and keyboardist/vocalist Jenn Moonbrick, a depressing zoom with failed election predictor/Phil Braun dopp Allan Lichtman, Doug's Banduments game, and Mount Eerie performing "Huge Fire."

BY DA WAY! This Sunday 11/24 for PATRONS ONLY it's the long awaited return of Office Hours Music Night with special guests The Lemon Twigs! More info to come.

Coming soon! Tim Heidecker & The Very Good Band "Live From Kevin's" directed by Ben Berman. Available with a special discount for members here on Patreon on Thanksgiving Day (Thursday 11/28).

Go see Tim on tour this winter! Get tickets at timheidecker.com/live.

Pick up a copy of Robert Popper's new book "The Elsie Drake Letters" at any of these fine retailers.

Sarah Delaney

does anyone know why youtube asks to confirm you're not a bot and sign in, but there's nowhere to sign in?

Max Kamm

I’d pay to hear Tim read all of Bob Dylan’s Tweets. Please make this happen.

I watched the “Coward Brothers” on Colbert that came up in the second half. Elvis struggles to match the tempo in the second verse, making it feel ‘off.’ Over the past 20 years, his phrasing has lagged so far behind the beat it makes the band seem ahead—though it’s all him. Since his Burt Bacharach collab, he’s leaned heavily into this vibrato-laden crooner style. Give “Imperial Bedroom” a spin if you haven’t heard it in a while. It’s his best. Recorded at Abbey Road with Geoff Emerick, the Beatles’ engineer.

Loved the insurance chat! I will never be able to remove "plop in the commode" from my mind.

Tim and Robert Popper had me laughing and crying so hard.

Michael Longley

Good show. I like 'Rant Tim'. You didn't let Matt give his Rec. Who said "I gotta go" at the very end? Phil?

Grant Peterson

Tim please prank call Trump Tower. Let them know the plumbing in your room is overflowing with shit and what looks to be ground beef

Timothy Mclean

I guess I hate prank calls. People are trying to work and get through a shit day.

Kris macfalda

Very true. Confederates even tried to play their right to hold slaves off as a right to a simple, traditional, agrarian lifestyle. On stolen Native land that was used for traditional AND non-commercial use

Des L

Torn about prank phone calls. They are funny on a surface level, but I can’t help but feel bad for the often underpaid/entry-level worker that is on the line that is probably not allowed to hang up.

What, you don't think writing an epic reddit book with Meghan McCain is awesome??

Painthuffer2

Yes, partially because with modernity also came capitalism and the integration of capital markets within society kind of degenerates everything into a “value form”. so if there’s a part of society, which doesn’t hold “value” (say traditional culture) it becomes “inefficient”/ devalued. It’s fascinating that the most ardent defenders of capital ( western “conservatives”) are also the ones exclaiming how tradition is being destroyed and then point the finger at XYZ. The dynamic above, value form/commodification (leading to atomization and alienation), is the killer of “tradition”. I would also err on the side of caution with M. I. Black. He’s a funny mf’er but politically etc., I’ll say flawed/naive

KD

I’m going to check out that Michael Ian Black podcast. I’ve read theory about modernity that alleges that we have lost some abilities to communicate nonverbally or other forms of communication because of our development of language. Very interesting

Wish DJ Dougductible would have had hopped into the insurance chat. Curious about his thoughts on the industry

Aaron Bratys

This episode caused me to go down a rabbit hole of Allan Lichtman, whose luxurious hair is majestic; why so many Indians operate hotels (willingness to work long hours in exchange for US visas); and new-to-me conspiracies that RFK jr actually murdered his second wife (allegedly).

Sherri Locker

That Allan Lichtman sure looked a lot like Uncle Phil

Joss Humberstone

about time i heard some anti costello talk, not to be negative, but whew i never understood the whole thing with this guy

Zach Gilleran

It's so funny to see Tim go off on how bad Burnett is sounding now compared to when he played drums on this terrible classic in his younger years. https://youtu.be/9EEZAivzl1Q

Couldn't stop laughing

Grant Peterson

The break video shows his name, he was in Journey.

Kyle

I've unironically listened to insurance related podcasts since I'm in that field. Then I stopped because they were boring.

Kyle

Phil smoking is always funny

Dan

hey Tim, in case you're up for some unsolicited advice about your nose pain? I highly recommend a non medicated saline solution that sprays up there. sleeping with a humidifier or sitting in a sauna helps too. the same thing happens to me when the air gets dry.

Crystal Lake

Dewey S
