Zach!

Good morning all! How fun was it to have Zach in with us?  He's one of the few people where I'm always like "ah man, I don't wanna bother him!" but we were talking a few weeks ago and he jumped on it right away... he almost came in the week we lost power, but he got busy... I was a little worried he'd cancel the day before so I asked matt to make him a surprise guest in case he didn't show.  But man, he really fit in nicely and wrote me later telling me how much fun he had.  I wish Doug could have been there! Lizzy was a great substitute

He's one of those guys that I don't see often but when I do it's just magical fun times, with bits and goofs coming at a steady flow.  I don't remember how we became friends. I know we had him on the show and like some other people like John C, he really sparked with what we were doing. I imagine he invited us to his place in Venice for a party or something. It helped that Marilyn and his wife got along (in fact they're both from Edmonton, CA!) and one Christmas we actually happened to both be in town and met up for a drink there.

I remember one early get-together at Zach's place where Bradley Cooper was there and this was right after The Hangover had come out and I didn't recognize him, and was asking him what he did for a living... he was nice, as I recall and said he was an actor.

I think we'd have seen them more if we hadn't lived clear across the city. If you're unfamiliar with the greater Los Angeles area you must know that Glendale people and Venice people just can't be real friends. It's just too far to drive.

We did end up going to their farm in North Carolina for a long weekend way back before kids in the year 2009.

We alluded to it on the show, but the other side of the cat story is,  Marilyn and I pulled into the farm in our Sebring rental car at night, driving down the country dirt road to the farm looking to park, when I dipped on over into a ditch!

The next morning, we had to hitch it up and pull it out, but the tractor wasn't cutting it, so the pickup truck came in. Zach turned on the engine and we heard the horrible sound of a cat screeching! ugh. one of the farm cats had been sleeping under the hood and got caught in the drive train or something... We got the cat to the vet and were able to save the cat! :)

Years would go by without seeing Z, but then when we did, it was like yesterday. I had lunch with him a few months ago and he seemed to really be itching to do something really silly and stupid like we did years ago... I don't know if we'll ever get to it, but I'm really glad to call him a friend.

Scheduling update! I'm heading out of town tomorrow night to do a few episodes of a certain show Mister Mark Proksch is on... I'll be zooming in remotely next Thursday though so no worries. Then I have to go from Toronto to Dublin for ANOTHER show I'm doing, which I don't know much about but it's an ITV show from Chris O'Dowd... I'm in a bunch of episodes but they're "block shooting" me (shooting all my scenes over 2 days) so it will be a fast and loose trip to the Emerald Isle, I'm afraid.  Then I'll come home to start prepping Oscar Special and TimFest the week after!   No worries we have plans to keep everything spinning in the Office Hours World!

I'm so excited by the recc center! It's a little THIN now, but i feel like it's going to fill up quickly! how about I pick a few from the comments this weekend?

Piece and Luft,

PS> one thing I'm not recommending is Masters of The Air, the new "Band Of Brothers" show on Apple. The first episode was a dud!

Comments

I'm new to the Patreon but wanted to say that the recc room is my favorite part of the show!

Melissa

Here is a wonderful new gem of an EP that came outta Spain last month https://flexidiscos.bandcamp.com/album/supongamos-por-ejemplo

Mada

Love you Tim! Here's a rec - the Pat Metheny Group's self-titled 1978 album.

Daniel Q

I got a recc I just listened to: Alison Krauss and Union Station’s instrumental cover of Little Liza Jane. Incredible.

Aberk18

I got a couple recc's in response to things mentioned on recent ep's: Captain Matt mentioned never being able to find a song with a similar vibe to Otis Redding's "Sittin' on the Dock of the Bay" - for that I recommend Rick Nelson's "Garden Party". And you guys mentioned how you enjoy playing Connections, the NYT game. It seems to me that concept was possibly stolen from the great BBC quiz show Only Connect. It's the hardest quiz show I've ever watched - if I get 2 or 3 solutions per show I feel really good about myself. Great host (I crush a little), very anglo-centric, plenty of humor. If BBC isn't available to you I believe there are plenty of older episodes available on YouTube

Derek Sipes

Late to the recc game this time, but since she passed away last week, I've been listening to a bit of Melanie. She's kind of more out there than some of her folk contemporaries, a bit of a space case (who I think later took that path into libertarianism, unfortunately). But the songs are good - I think most people just know her for "Brand New Key" but there are plenty of other great ones - "The Good Book", "Animal Crackers", and "Lay Down, Lay Down" are all standouts

Zane The Brain

I mostly listen to Japanese music nowadays BUT Sleater-Kinney’s new album ‘Little Rope’ is out, and it’s pretty good. Worth a listen or two. :)

Jane Crocker

Have fun in Dublin Tim. Until recently I worked in the National Print Museum for a number of years. Pop in early on a thursday if you find yourself left with some wanderin time. The old letterpress printers/typesetters who used to work the presses are usually in with the machines up and running. Always a treat to see <3 (not to take away from the wonderful history of print and the role it played in Irish history that's also on show at the museum)

ToddUmptious

I recommend that new DKR song

ToddUmptious

It really is! Poor Bingo receives a warning from a cop for smelling like champagne.

Toby Poole

Interesting!

Dana

I recommend On Cinema On Demand

Jane Crocker

You and Eric gotta do more stuff with Zach! :)

Jeff Jörliden

You didn't recognize Bradley Cooper from the Stella sketches? To me that is what he is most recognizable from

Brian Houdlette

MUSIC RECS! If you dig Rollerskate Skinny check out the Lotus Crown album Chokin' on the Jokes as well. Jimi Shields was in RS early on (he left before the recording of Horsedrawn Wishes and moved to Chicago where he formed Lotus Crown). I'm sure you'll dig as well. Also check out Badfinger's Give It Up, a fuzzed out masterpeice!

Christopher Laramee

Fargo season 4 using a truly haunting version of “Toxic” by Britney Spears was masterful and exceptionally creepy. Somehow I doubt True Detective is going to make Twist and Shout creepy, no matter how hard they try.

Kevin Spilker

Tim, I say this with Peace and Love, you need to push past the first episode of Masters of the Air. I never knew my mother’s father but he was a bombardier in WWII. I have old pics of him in England and see myself. Anyways, this series has brought to life that part of the WWII story that is less of dramatized.

Todd Long

He knows his business trading!🖤

Dana

I am enjoying the book Quantum Criminals by Alex Pappademas. The new album from The Smile called Wall of Eyes is a good listen. The podcast "A life curated' with Nolan Browne is interesting, the episode with Thom Zimny is good for Bruce heads or just visual thinkers. Dean Ween's Sunday Sauce is great this time of year if you are ok w/ eating meat. https://web.archive.org/web/20090504002816/http://chocodog.com:80/chocodog/ween/ween_new/waste_fr.html

Jim D.

been really big on the album all news is good news but the band surprise chef. some really funky/groovy instrumentals to vibe out to

Garek McGuinn

my recs that exclusively start with PF: Pink Floyd (music), Pink Flamingos (movies), Pale Fire (reading). If you're not into John Waters, Primal Fear will do.

EKB

great story - the eharmony.com line stole the 'sode for me.

Chalameybe

I recommend Bingo (1991) currently available to watch free on YouTube! Likely the finest dog movie ever made!

Toby Poole

Zach is a gem. So funny and genuine. Lizzy was incredible, too. So many subtle jokes that I felt went unnoticed at times. She doesn’t miss.

Tim R.

I watched that show twice and cried like a baby both times. -t

Tim Heidecker

Snooze fest!

Sean Enright

First ep of the WWII show was a real dud! Boring and those actors all seem to be doing impressions of impressions of real post-war actors. Butler is just doing Pitt, who was just doing Brando.

Sean Enright

Ditto anything St. Lucia! Very good live, too.

Sean Enright

I highly recommend Kyle Mooney’s Netflix show ‘S.M.A.S.H.’ - it’s amazing. Using different genres of media to make fun of early 90s Saturday morning kids tv.

KatieMoe

I think it sort of flew under the radar during the pandemic, but my rec is Station Eleven on Max (there's a book too but I enjoy the show). Worth the watch and rewatch, and it's a really beautiful take on life after society collapses because of a 99.9% deadly pandemic.

Drew Lawrence

Oooh give Natasha a big hug from a OHL female fan. I think she is incredible and would love to hear her on show!

KatieMoe

I'm from Tin Town (Edmont'i'n, as its pronounced locally)! I moved away 15 years ago. I don't really like it there. Would love to hear your thoughts, Tim.

MP

I rec the brand new album from a band called Tapir. Randy Newman meets Sparklehorse or something. BEAUTIFUL songwriting. https://open.spotify.com/track/7AHX0F99w4x23uSZihklZ6?si=I4vDVaPxSXuKp06P8a4YBA

Liam

I just read The Spy Who Came in from the Cold, which is a ferocious book. I love it. I'm not sure if I love the movie with Richard Burton even more. He's giving it all as this burnt out spy who's boiling with rage and resentment about the terrible things he's had to do as a spy, but has to pull a terrible operation for England in the 60s against the East Germans to get one of them killed.

Angelo Mike

My rec is this 1970s Beatles reunion. https://youtu.be/o7hLoya6b0Q?si=l8wkImgT-GQgINZR

Shane Cooper

Fallen Leaves (2023, 81 minutes)

Blake Buesnel

The wall joke made me join Patreon finally lol 🫠 soy Mexicana

Ana

We can’t get enough of you and Zach! Recs: “Smoking Causes Coughing” by Quentin Dupieux (movie) also St. Lucia album “Utopia”

Jeff Shirley

I loved Brazil and now I want to find the director's cut! 🤩

lilula9

What’s wild is I was just thinking about Zach because you brought up “sitting on the doc of the bay” on Conan’s podcast Zach had said he remade the song and called it “sitting on a co*k cause I’m gay” and now I’ve never heard the song the same 😂 I have a recc. For a song it’s a cover of abbas “slipping through my fingers”by Declan McKenna he sounds very Beatles like. It’s a beautiful cover.

🖤Cassie🖤

Zach's wholesomeness really adds warmth to the show, very cool you two are friends. Love the backstories. Aaahh I loved Chris O'Dowd's performance on The IT Crowd! Excited to see what you two will get up to. Safe travels to you and tell Mark we miss him. Currently I'm enjoying the free Rifftrax movies on Youtube. Laughed SO much to Rifftrax's "Honor and Glory", a really bad 90's martial arts movie that's just begging for Doug drops and Vic edits. The movie's so good in its badness it doesn't even need riffing.

lilula9

Quichenight's cover of I Wanna Pick You Up -- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bw4NiYHTXVA

Brian

Somehow they really managed to make a show about WW2 bombers into a snoozefest

Luke

Another awesome ep Tim! Loved seeing Zach hang. Really hope we get to see you guys do that silly project. I'm recommending my friends music. Alex Salcido on Bandcamp or Spotify. He's an incredible songwriter I think you'd really dig Tim.

bloodsimple

Great funny show with King Z. My current recc is the film Godland on Criterion Channel (which is also a big recc). Also the film Little Murders from 1971. Vic please make more videos!

Dan Papa

I gotta podcast rec for the group (probably already know about it, but I’m new): Disgraceland (https://www.disgracelandpod.com) Also, this is a sibling podcast: Badlands https://(www.disgracelandpod.com/badlands) Jake Brennan is great.

Jason Luckey

Will Tim be a vampire? Stay tuned! Excited for the Chris O’Dowd connection, everything he has done has been phenomenal.

Steven Meltzer

such a fun show this week! recc from me would be the wonderful 2011 indie pop album 'one last show of hearts' by shade (therealshade.bandcamp.com, apple music, etc)... the group is basically toronto res jane gowan and various friends coming and going, and a few bars of their beautiful song 'does it matter' was in portlandia's 'dmv fantasies' sketch.. have a great weekend everyone.. xo

Bob L.

i don't make my schedules. my schedules make me.

Tim Heidecker

Tom Schiller’s Nothing Lasts Forever—Brazil for NYC in the style of a 30s MGM film. Never officially released, but rips of TV airings float around. All of Schiller’s SNL shorts are really great, too.

Max

Here’s my reccs from this week: The Zone of Interest (wtf), Maron’s chat with Paul Giamatti, and Terry Gilliam’s directors cut of Brazil!

Richard Farrands

Started listening to David Cross’s new podcast, Senses Working Overtime. Such a delight! Also been rewatching Star Trek: Voyager 👌

Michelle L. Stone

You talking about Zach this way makes me teary eyed, it's so sweet. Friends. ♥️ --Love you guys!!

Ashley Oh

Holy shit Tim!!! Great show this week, So funny and cool. Everyone was on POINT!, Brilliant stuff. You Also blew my mind with the ✨✨ROLLERSKATE SKINNY✨✨ Recommendation. Being that I'm from ole Ireland, it was pretty nice to hear this classic tune blasting away. I was rockin' 🤟😆 too, I always had this on playlists back in da day. Thank you for the fantastic show(Yourself🤠, VB🎶, Lizzy💖, Zach🌞 & Matt🕶). 🥩🥩🥩🥩🥩+🍺🍺 Peace ✌

Padraig Glennon

My rec is “Strange Tapes Strange Show” on YouTube. If you’re a fan of Everything is Terrible or Found Footage, it’s in that world without being derivative. Well edited and funny. https://youtube.com/@StrangeTapesVHS?si=l8BUQUotEWrDgJe0 Here’s a good sample of the kind of thing you’re in for: https://youtu.be/EjjPeoxXSo8?si=KQa5RM3K1C9BfTE7

Max Goranson

Zone of Interest is very good

Ben Silver

Yesss!!

Rick Paton

rainbow music rec is infinite bisous. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nJoli8qRfUs ✌️& ❤️ dark show rec is Too Old To Die Young. immaculate visuals. incredible soundtrack by my fave Cliff Martinez. crazy it just got one season. so good. definitely not for the faint of heart.

rainbowdark

Zach was so funny, I hope he returns on the show.

Johnnee

Still need to give Big Beacon a listen! I've just finished reading the Poor Things book from which the movie is adapted. It's by Scottish writer Alasdair Grey - it's funny and eccentric - pretty cool.

Joss Humberstone

Music recs: anything from the superb Japan-based noise downer rock project Les Rallizes Denudes - they just released a lot of back catalog material on Bandcamp. Also, for Vic and Doug, the zany new “Return to Archive” album from Matmos - electronics cross-pollinated with samples from the Folkways Records label…

Bret Saunders

Rec: The new album from Torres came out yesterday. It’s great! As all her albums are. And she’s on tour now. Highly recommend listening to and seeing her. I think she’d be a great guest for OHL too. Doesn’t look like the current tour dates mesh with the OHL schedule, though.

Chad

I’ve got to re-rec Zach’s two book recs. Demon Cooperhead and Stolen Focus are two of the best books I’ve read in years!!

Chas Bowie

Great guest, great content 👍🏻

Peter Fishbeast

Music recc: Office Dog - Spiel song-by-song overview from the songwriter here: https://www.brooklynvegan.com/office-dogs-kane-strang-tells-us-about-every-song-on-their-debut-lp-spiel-stream-it/

Stu Walker

Tim on what we do in the shadows would be amazing!

Matt Henderson

Rec: you guys have mentioned creepy Papa John Phillips on the show a couple times over the years, but the other Papa Denny Doherty has a great album i think you’d like. it’s called Watcha Gonna Do https://youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_lLQhUYfQGByVUWBXKbjDSnT8g3CsoF9vs&si=k5_jVTNKHGYPS5sU

Great show! Where's the rec center? I am.dumb can't find it

Pee Pat

Music recs: Michael Nau - Accompany, Decisive Pink - Ticket to Fame ✌❤🎵

Old James

Recc's, older bands: Laid Back, mostly known for White Horse but have a more cool songs and The Style Council. Thanks for the post, it's a fun read.

Mary Newman

Oh my god Shadows?!?!?! I will lose my mind.

Valery Brennan

MAGA sure did ruin red caps with white lettering.

William Riley

My recommendation is the podcast ‘Things Fell Apart’ by Jon Ronson. A new series recently came out so I have been listening to it. It has similar themes to some of Adam Curtis’s work (they are both friends I think). He basically goes through some key culture war issues such as abortion, transgender rights, pizzagate etc, and talks about how seemingly innocuous events years ago set off a chain reaction getting us to where we are today with them.

Douglas Fleming

Why do you always make your schedule so that it is the most stressful around the Oscar Special??

Phil Braun

I recommend the song "I Can't Help Myself" by Orange Juice. Their album You Can't Hide Your Love Forever is excellent.

Brian Rooney

Zach was on 🔥. He’s always good in interviews, but he had a lot more energy than usual and was full of zingers.

Ben

Zach was great! I'd like to recommend the albums "Dream Themes" by Pipe-Eye and "Dream Hunting in the Valley of the In-between" by Man Man. Also, the book "Running the Light" by Sam Tallent. It's a fun read!

Jasper St Germain

safe travels T

brainblob

Great ep with Zach, loved the advice for the young man in a jam. My recommendation: Chris Wilcha's 2000 documentary THE TARGET SHOOTS FIRST, which is free on YouTube or archive.org – great watch!

future canon

I too have driven a car into a ditch in the middle of the night in rural NC

Cole J. Batty

Great to hear Zach wants to be a regular! Meeks Cutoff! Kelly Reichardt’s Western.

Caleb

Mornin! Love these Saturday morning letters. Im enjoying the Barbra Streisand audio book very much. She reads it and she goes off on tangents that are not in the book… like randomly telling 20 minute stories about what she ate the night before… excellent. Have a great week!

Ellie Hajdu

If you've never seen the Norwegian action dark comedy thriller HEADHUNTERS (2011), it's always one of my go to recs. Just insane crazy fun!

MIREST

Part of me really misses comedian Z but if I were him and had such successes, I'd be existing in a similar fashion as him lol. Thanks for getting him on the show!

KD

Vampire Tim?!

Randy Faucheux

My big recc is the band MSPAINT

Drew B Hall

Good to know re. Masters of The Air: give it a miss!
