Added 2023-10-28 15:00:05 +0000 UTCI started writing thoughts on Killers of The Flower Moon, but decided instead to make it a full-on Saturday Extra! Featuring Millie!

I respect however people feel about the film and don't want to shame anyone for liking it. That said, I felt it was vile murder porn in which the Osage were just hapless victims to be murdered and desecrated for 3 hours, and watching scumbag murderers plot how to kill them/get away with it for another 30 minutes. I didn't sense any insight into the situation, no understanding of how Burkhart's WWI experience affected him; how he and his uncle rationalized their actions, why choosing to kill for money was important to them, how the Osage culture was more broadly affected by the oil and white people descending upon them, etc. That, to me, was a mistake. It felt like there was no dynamic range of emotion and instead we're watching a snuff film of Osage people being knocked off like puppets, and Scorsese saying, "See, isn't that bad?" A good counter point to the film, to me, is Scorsese's Silence (2017). That shows a culture clash and violence, but it shows the moral rationale of each character and how important their goals are to prove the righteousness of their cause. I'm not saying films can't depict horrible behavior, but this film to chose the wrong character to center around and offers no insights or anything to reflect on. What do we gain from seeing four or five murders of native people as opposed to just one? Or just seeing their bodies afterward? It just reads relegating Osage people in their own story to victims of butchery. I had no insight into why Mollie stayed with Ernest as we watch him poison her over and over. So we're just watching a white guy torture a native woman like that's something we hadn't considered was wrong. And that seems like a cop out. This isn't to hate on the filmmakers or people who like it. For whatever reason I've only seen a few people have the read of the film I have, and most people like it. As for the ending of the film, the movie makes it too easy to let us off the hook. It was an ending I don't think the movie deserved. I think Osage stories deserve to be told. But I think this film relegates them to mere puppets to be shot, blown up, and desecrated. Another good counter point film, in my opinion, that handles a part of brutal American history with insight is 12 Years a Slave. Just note all the turning points in that story that avoid cliches, being trite, or dopey subplots that could make it more palatable to audiences that object that it's too disturbing or violent. That movie and Silence, to me, don't cop out the way this film does.

2023-11-08 03:07:55 +0000 UTCI've heard complaints that the Taylor Swift movie playing at the same venues simultaneously is drowning out some of the quieter parts of the movie. Which is a lot of the parts of the movie.

2023-11-01 18:30:16 +0000 UTCBased on the runtime, I'm pretty sure Gregg would deem this one of the greatest movies ever made.

2023-11-01 18:28:31 +0000 UTCFinally got to see it. The radio play at the end was such a great touch. Agree with what you said about it and I also think it was kind of a meta-commentary on the movie itself. Like despite it being a wonderful movie telling a (true) story that needs to be told, itself is still entertainment, but what are you gonna do? More people will go watch a fictional movie than read a nonfiction book about these events.

2023-10-31 00:04:21 +0000 UTCPeople rarely go to the movies and are so programmed by marvel shit to expect laugh out loud quips periodically. There were only a couple of scenes I remember making me laugh that Marty was clearly going for (the front is the front, the back is the back). It took two tries but I got the people behind me to shut up.

2023-10-30 22:52:29 +0000 UTCI sat by two complete dolts who audibly reacted and laughed(?!) at almost every single scene in the movie so I need to see it again.

2023-10-30 16:33:37 +0000 UTCthis impression reminded me of Shakespeare in a way too. how many of those plays were derived from the political and historical events from the time. Jerry Springer didn’t ruin tv, he just augmented what was already there (with nuanced differences of course)

2023-10-29 20:39:25 +0000 UTCBut what I really need to know is the runtime. Gregg’s movie expertise is so needed at a time like this!

2023-10-29 18:44:40 +0000 UTCI don't think I've seen better side character casting in a Marty movie. Incredible faces that added so much richness to the world. The moonshiner hitman that looked like hillbilly Daniel Plainview (Ty Mitchell) was my favorite. Jason Isbell was also a standout. Do you have any thoughts on Brendan Fraser? Seemed to be the most divisive performance. I also couldn't help but think of the Palestinians when the chief was speaking so movingly about the dispossession of their land. Btw thank you for posting in support of #CeasefireNow, T. Ending absolutely floored me too. It was my favorite scene next to the Osage afterlife sequence with the mother. It was a much needed moment of tranquil beauty.

2023-10-29 13:45:55 +0000 UTCExcellent excellent review t. Maybe a bit meta but perhaps you could do a "real" on cinema show. I'd go to the cinema for this one. 3.5 hours is alot at home when there are distractions but being at the cinema enforces concentration and I like that. You will need the toilet a few times but that's fine.

2023-10-29 10:56:14 +0000 UTCI think that scene is very much in line with Marty's Catholic worldview. It really did seem like there was a possibility that she would wipe the slate clean if he just confessed. But he couldn't even admit it to himself.

2023-10-29 09:37:38 +0000 UTCI’m an Isbell head and it was cool seeing him in it (Sturgil Simpson is also in it). I was able to suspend my disbelief for Jason which I think means he did a good job, he fit right in.

2023-10-29 09:05:27 +0000 UTCYou really validated my feelings about the movie which feels nice, but man what an incredible experience it was. I found it really interesting what you highlighted about the “resignation” of Lily Gladstone, I didn’t have the words for it before watching your video but that is a brilliant idea they executed so well. As for the runtime, it completely flew by for me. Probably makes it the best paced movie I’ve ever seen. Do we talk Oscars here? Oppenheimer vs KOTFM for best picture should be interesting, as well as acting awards for Cillian vs Leo/ Bobby. Lily turned in a performance that has no competition.

2023-10-29 09:01:34 +0000 UTCThere is also another book written in 1990 By a Native American Linda Hogan called Mean Spirit. I really want to see the movie too. Thanks Tim for your review, have a great weekend and Halloween with your family.

2023-10-29 03:50:29 +0000 UTCi had a very strange experience when i saw the movie. first whoever was supposed to turn the lights off dropped the ball, and they didn’t get turned off until at least 10 mins into the start, so that was very distracting. then there were some chatty folks (this was a matinee) one person even took a phone call. it was anarchy. it was a good movie, but i think i will need a second viewing to really let it sink in. but i will never forgot leos teeth. i love how much marty loves your buddy ari aster.

2023-10-28 18:42:46 +0000 UTCShame on any theatre adding an intermission to this. I happily sat for the full runtime and was totally gripped and invested the entire time, the pace is perfectly executed. I would hate to have that be interrupted!

2023-10-28 17:52:06 +0000 UTCThanks, T. Loved hearing your thoughts. Spoilers but the scene that’s really haunting me is the one where Molly’s mom passes away. Stunning and incredibly powerful.

2023-10-28 16:11:24 +0000 UTCI read the book quite a while ago, and just KNEW it was going to be a great movie when I heard who all was involved. Can't wait to see it. Also, I'm a Jason Isbell fan and have read that he gives a good performance too.

2023-10-28 16:04:45 +0000 UTCNice review. Did your little on give a tear sign for the Fightins? Also thought Scorsese told a great parable about the nature of evil. I didnt see Leo has highly conflicted or even fully cognizant of how rotten he was. Evil often isn't self aware, conscious of its own depravity, etc. It just exists like a wild beast with without a moral concern.

2023-10-28 15:56:12 +0000 UTCAnd speaking of Devery Jacobs…does it pass the Aila test? (https://the-aila-test.tumblr.com/about) I don’t think so from what I know of the story…that doesn’t mean it’s not a good movie or not a story worth telling, it’s just FOOD FOR THOUGHT AND DISCUSSION

2023-10-28 15:43:30 +0000 UTCThe close-up on Millie’s yawn made me laugh so hard. Great chat, Tim. You really put into words just how powerful this film is.

2023-10-28 15:37:58 +0000 UTCI haven’t seen it yet, I read Devery Jacobs review, I am not a fan of on screen violence on the level that she describes, so I honestly don’t know if I’ll see the movie. I started to read the book twice but did not finish. It is net good, I think, to teach this story to a broad audience, but one hopes that it motivates more interest in indigenous stories that aren’t just true crime and massive injustices. On another note - Millie is adorable and seems like a good active listener!!!
Ornico (katie)
2023-10-28 15:34:08 +0000 UTCWas a great movie, I liked how she gave him the opportunity to be honest with her at the end and how sour his dishonesty ended up feeling in that moment.
