It seems like if I wait until the point when most people would start, I end up running horribly late. And yet, when I start really early to make up for that delay... I end up taking a perfectly normal amount of time, and thus have to sit around awkwardly waiting for everyone else to catch up with me. Like, say, getting the Artist Alley table set up a good half hour before any paying customers will actually be allowed into the room. If I'd waited an extra half hour, you can be SURE I'd somehow still be hanging things up an hour after the doors had opened. That's just how it goes.
(And, um, I also try to hit the con floor early so I can put out those obnoxious "NOTICE THIS FLYER" things before the crowds show up. That too.)
