2022-09-11 00:44:41 +0000 UTCI definitely feel for Grizzly, being a DM myself I know what it’s like when players take a serious moment and flip it on it’s head. But I think it lends itself well to the SHOW even if it feels off for DnD. Sewer Ravioli and Party City Ghost are some of the moments I’ve laughed the hardest at in PD, so sometimes the ridiculous bits are the best ones. On top of that, I think in-character, the jokes can be seen as a defense mechanism for the fact that they still have no idea where Gillion is. Without the jokes they have nothing to keep them holding it together. Jay nearly broke down right before they went into the mirror dimension. Even if some of the bits are OOC.

2022-09-09 17:39:40 +0000 UTCIt’s weird, I think Gillion kinda kept things tame for the most part during sessions, which I never would have thought before he was gone. Whenever Charlie isn't going goblin mode of course. Gill’s honor and general kindness just kept everyone in line I guess, as opposed to the seemingly chaotic neutral goobleck that’ll not only go along with anything but definitely plays into Charlie’s deep desire to be a mischievous slime creature. Although I love goobleck a lot I feel the last few sessions have been rough for Grizz to reign everyone in because of the sudden change in dynamics.

2022-09-09 03:10:16 +0000 UTCI feel like it’s all about balance with bits and jokes. In more “downtime” sections goofing off is fun and works just fine, but some scenes just don’t call for it. As a DM I do feel Grizzly’s frustration though, it’s tough when you’re trying to have a serious moment and people are joking around

2022-09-08 12:33:05 +0000 UTCi have a love and hate relationship with sewer ravioli- its very entertaining at the beginning but as it drags on it kinda can be a bit much- like i love my crazy jrwi moments but knowing the lore that grizz has set up is always a fun part to try and guess what happens next and i feel like there isn't a lot of balance-

2022-09-08 07:34:10 +0000 UTCI sort of feel like the boys try to take Grizzly’s world pretty seriously but doing so unintentionally leads to them making more emersion-breaking bits. I think that is because the world of Riptide doesn’t naturally have the right amount of absurdity in it to sustain those type of bits. To me there is certainly a difference between bits that revolve around in-game material and bits that involve real world stuff. I guess this a roundabout way of saying that a lot of bits feel like they break the fourth wall. I definitely understand Grizzly’s feelings because to an extent I feel the same way. I do enjoy sewer-ravioli bits, but let’s just say that if Riptide ever got a TV show/anime adaptation, there would be a lot of bits that would have to be cut (and that isn’t because they are too vulgar or explicit). I like to think that goofy, out-of-pocket bits are akin to a spice/seasoning. Using some of them can make the meal more exciting and enjoyable, but after a certain point they start to hurt more than they help. I think there is typically a good balance of absurdity and seriousness in each episode, bits are no substitute for story, but I like the story to be embellished with bits. As long as you don’t lose the plot, you won’t lose me either. 👍
