Haunting of Hill House Episode 4

Shamonda and Ralph- so pleased you’re doing Hill House! Thank you!!! This was all over the internet and has probably been written about by another member, but JUST in case you and anyone else who might see this didn’t know, each kid represents a stage of the grieving process: Stephen is denial, Shirley anger, Theo bargaining, Luke depression, and Nell acceptance. I thought that was a really cool trick. Oooh, I can’t wait for you guys to get to the two best epis in the series- 5 & 6! I know you’ve already seen this S., but for Ralph it should be a treat, I hope ;).

To jump off what you just wrote, Natalia, I believe Mike Flannigan has a particular skill in using horror to explore deeper themes such as trauma, familial trauma, addiction, loss, grief, etc. Scares and things that go bump in the night are his way in, and then he hits you with a punch straight to the heart ;). He’s so good at crafting story- like his use of the flashbacks and tying each character’s episode to the larger picture of what happened to this family when they were living at Hill House, and how it’s shaped and affected them individually and as a family unit all these years later. It’s all just so brilliantly done. Notice how the two youngest children were hit the hardest- Nell and Luke. When kids are young they need to make sense of adverse events. If there’s no acceptable explanation they tend to blame themselves, internalizing it. Accordingly we see how this happened to Nell and Luke. The middle kids Shirley and Theo end up isolative as adults, quick to anger towards everyone and everything around them, and Stephen as the eldest- his issue is blinders to what’s happening around him, including denial that anything adverse occurred at Hill House at all. But he was clearly affected by his time spent there.
