EP 38: IS DRINKING A HOBBY?

Today's episode is longer than usual because it feature's Alex and Kay's first argument! We get heated over the simple question: What denotes a hobby?

Special thanks to Slic for our music

Me listening to this podcast while hiking: 👁️👄👁️

Hobbies i consider strictly recreational. I feel like Alex is trying to broaden that category

Screaming because the guy who sharted was probably consoling himself when he got home saying surely no one will remember that this happened tomorrow just for y'all to spend a good 10 mins airing out the intimate details of his shart on your podcast

For me? A hobby falls in one of four categories. 1. Consuming media: reading, watching movies, listening to music, etc. I believe learning about things would also fall under this category (including learning about coffee and wine) 2. Collecting: antiquing, wardrobe curation etc. I would also argue that collecting wine would count 3. Creating: so writing, painting, crafting, cooking would all fall under this category 4. Doing: things like hiking, repelling, horseback riding, running, going to the gym etc Now where things get a little dicey for me is, even though I listed cooking and wine and coffee and the gym under valid hobbies, I still have some conflicting feelings about them. Those specific hobbies are almost in a gray area for me, where that’s more just kind of the art of living. It’s just you being a human and getting really into these things that you would be doing already. I feel like this topic has a little too much nuance to be completely black and white but I do think that there are things that absolutely do not count as hobbies such as: Eating out, going to a food festival, smoking, drinking, Etc. those to me are just things that you enjoy doing. I don’t think there’s enough there for them to be a hobby. I can’t really explain why I feel that way, it’s more of just a vibes thing.

I'm very literal so I think hobby is anything you produce because it's an activity you do regularly. Versus an interest is something you learn about regularly, with no real activity (besides reading maybe) and your interest being that topic

I’m 9 minutes in and the Poughkeepsie bit killed me. Sincerely, someone who went to school with the girl who made the “When I’m back in Poughkeepsie I feel it” tiktok.

One time I was getting the nervous rumbles in my tummy cause I was starting acting classes over zoom, and 2 minutes before the call I trusted a fart I shouldn’t have and fully shit my pants. My gf will not let me live it down.

First ever *recorded* argument or argument in your relationship in general?

i feel like a hobby is something you do for fun in your free time that you COULD monetize but choose not to (i.e., knitting, thrifting, painting, woodwork) but an interest is something you do in your free time that you either can’t monetize or you’re not skilled enough to monetize (i.e., being into wine/beer/steak, reading, running, cooking, fashion). personally i think my only hobby is crocheting. my interests include reading and cooking. i also just pulled these definitions out my ass

i really enjoy the hobby discourse!! I am a person with a lot of scattered interests. for me, my capital H Hobbies also involve a level of community involvement and engagement (preferably in person but online can work too). and they're something I intentionally and purposefully make time in my life for, as opposed to just something I do just because I have time to fill. a lot of my previous hobbies ended up being spaces filled with obnoxious men. the long and short of it for y'all it is that if a man says he is a "reefer" (keeps saltwater reef aquariums; tends to be way too into automation in fishkeeping) that's a warning sign to you LMAO. but that may just be a general "people who only enjoy the most expensive version of a hobby tend to be insufferable"
